He recounts his voyage north to Alaska from Esquimault the departure of Stefansson and others to search for fresh meat when the ship was trapped by ice the drift in Beaufort and Chukchi Seas the sinking of the Karluk the sledge journey to Wrangell Island and the eventual rescue of the survivors. <p>Published as campaign material during Lincoln's campaign for his first term in 1860. Cover of stamped dark brown fabric with gilt on the spine. Spine states "Honest Old Abe" followed by <em>The Life of Abraham Lincoln </em>and the authors name. A gilt axe and portrait of Lincoln precedes the publisher's name at the base of the spine. The free portions of the spine are missing top and bottom as is most of the fabric on the edges see photos #6 shows the top edge and #7 the lower edge. There is a split along the lower rear edge of the spine of about 5 cm see photo #5. The binding is solid and the pages are tight with some foxing and tanning as would be expected although I've seen far younger books with much more of both. A gift inscription in faded pencil on the front free endpaper indicates that S. Randall received this book April 10 of 1860 from Uncle Chauncy. The bulk of this book is all about Lincoln but at the end is a short biography of his running mate Hannibal Hamlin. This is a very rare book with only a few on the market.</p> Derby & Jackson, Publishers hardcover

A remarkable story of Lincoln as a candidate for President in 1860 when the same author who had written a work Presidential Candidates in 1859 listing nearly 20 names who might be President Douglas Salmon Chase Seward Fremont as well as Jefferson Davis Yet within a year he had published this very important early biography of Lincoln distinguished by a wonderful Brady image of Lincoln on the frontispiece. Lincoln receives the Presidential nomination in May of 1860 and already copies of this book were appearing all over the Eastern U.S. from New York to Chicago. A near fine copy bound in publisher's brown cloth spine lettering gilt one bumped corner yellow endpapers bookseller's ticket on rear pastedown of Washington D.C's Big Book Shop. Holt the first judge of the United States District Court of Puerto Rico appointed by President McKinley in 1900. This work by D.W. Bartlett 1828-1912 was the second book length biography of the Republican presidential candidate in 1860. It was announced by H. Dayton of New York on May 19th and released on June 4th. The first publication was released in paper wrappers but was followed by the "Authorized Edition" two weeks later with various publication imprints. The Lincoln campaign authorized no campaign biographies so this was a stretch for the publisher to claim. Horrocks 48. A.B. Burdick unknown

Eugene Field's copy with his signature dated Dec. 6th 1893 at the top of the title page; his forged signature of "A. Lincoln" on the front pastedown an ink certification on the verso of the rear free endpaper by Sonya Garfield a notary public for Cook County Illinois attesting to a statement on the rear pastedown by Eugene Field II viz.: "This 'Life' of A. Lincoln came from the library of my father Eugene Field. It is a first edition and bears the original manuscript signature of A. Lincoln. This volume was presented to my father by H. H. Kohlsaat publisher of the Times Herald who was a very dear friend of my father and was prized by him very highly as a very rare Lincoln item. Eugene Field II June 18 1935." With the pressure stamp of Sonya Garfield signatures of two witnesses one Gillespie and a W. Maxwell and the ownership signature of H. H. Kohlsaat crossed out presumably by Field on the front free endpaper. Laid in is a 5" x 4" photograph of Eugene Field by S. L. Stein Milwaukee inscribed at the top "With very much love to H. H.
