John Russell Bartlett 1805-1886 a historian and linguist was appointed to oversee the United States and Mexican Boundary Commission to survey and establish the current boundary between the United States and Mexico in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo and expanded with the Gadsden Purchase. The survey also determined the route of a southern railroad. Bartlett was also an artist and made illustrations of the southwest landscape. From Wagner-Camp ". Bartlett was a talented artist observer and reporter who contributed greatly to the knowledge of the geography and topography of the Southwest in his Personal Narrative. During three years with the Mexican Boundary Commission he traveled widely from central Texas to the Pacific Ocean and from Mazatlan to San Francisco. A contentious man and lacking perhaps certain administrative skills Bartlett succeeded in antagonizing most of his fellow-official on the Commission. Complete with two folding frontispieces a large fold-out map showing the border of the US and Mexico archivally mended and 14 tinted lithographed plates including one of Tucson Sonora not called for in the index. There is minor foxing to the plates. About 100 pages of text in Vol. 2 are discolored from what appears to be caused by the use of the volume as a tree leaf press and the pages facing the endpapers are moderately toned/browned. Moreover it sought exclusive privileges for its members and prohibited "consultation with any who do not become members of that body." Witnesses are sworn and testimony presented. John Stephen Bartlett had been expelled from the Society for malpractice after 'consulting with irregular practitioners and aiding and abetting quacks' namely Patrick Kearney an Irish Catholic physician and John Williams an oculist who had practiced in France. Selection of Poetry from Various Authors
1821. Hardcover. Leather spine. Good. A manuscript notebook with lovely original folk art oil paintings on both boards and two watercolors within! 4to. 30.5 by 19.5 cm. Unpaginated 18 leaves of wove paper with content followed by a few blanks. Watercolored title page with American eagle atop an orb and pedestal and a beautiful painting of ships bearing the American flag near a lighthouse perched on a rocky spit and a cape house beyond. The paintings on the boards are what strike us as the most unusual though especially because the medium is oils. One is of a windmill and a pastoral setting the other a cow drinking at a pond. Also a faint pencil sketch on the final leaf possibly a draft of one of the two cover paintings and elsewhere a tail vignette of a tombstone. The verse is not credited. The longest selection is "An abbreviation of the Shipwreck" which is in fact an abridged version of Falconer's narrative poem. Another "Epitaph on a Blacksmith" was written by Alexander Pennecuik. A poem entitled "Water" was penned by an Ann Taylor. We thus assume based on the title that most of the poetry was transcribed. The sea is the most common subject but by no means the exclusive one. The alum-tawed leather of the spine is heavily soiled. Repair of the sewing which binds the text block. Rubbing and minor loss on the cover panels. Original 1860's C-D-V of a painting of Josiah Bartlett with a full flawless signature executed in 1767 mounted below his image. Accompanied by an A.L.S. by the signers Grandson Ezra Bartlett who writes his nephew gifting him the above described autograph 8vo. 1 page personal letterhead Exeter New Hampshire September 15th 1884 to his nephew also Ezra in full: "As no autograph letter can be obtained I send you a picture of the gentleman with his signature written in July 1767 nine years before he signed The Declaration of Independence and while he was a member of the Provisional government. I also send not included a memorandum made in the company Day Book as a sample of his writing. His partner was my maternal grandfather Amos Gale". Accompanied by the original holograph envelope addressed to his nephew Ezra A. Bartlett M.D. All items are in fine condition.<br/><br/> American statesman and signatory of the Declaration of Independence. Everson’s inscription is in a shaky hand due to Parkinson’s disease by which he was stricken in 1972 and reads: “for my old friend and Dominican Brother Christopher with love and admiration. Brother Antoninus Oct. 1988 Portland Oregon.†Beneath which is Bartlett’s inscription: “for Christopher Eskelli with great thanks for your help with this book. Lee Bartlett Portland.†Christopher Eskelli is included in the acknowledgments as having contributed to this biography via extended taped interviews with the author. Illustrated. Fine fresh copy in a fine dust jacket. William Everson 1912 - 1994 was one of the core members of what is known as the San Francisco Renaissance in poetry and was closely aligned with both Kenneth Rexroth and Robinson Jeffers. In 1951 he joined the Dominican Order in Oakland CA thus the name ‘Brother Antoninus’ and left it in 1969 following his heart marrying Susanna Rickson. He was poet-in-residence at the University of California Santa Cruz in the 1970s and 80s where he founded the Lime Kiln Press publishing his own poetry as well as that of Robinson Jeffers and Walt Whitman.
