Jean-Isidore Gérard, detto “Grandville” (Nancy 1803, Parigi 1847) fu disegnatore, illustratore, caricaturista e incisore. “La celebrità raggiunta soprattutto come caricaturista mise in ombra le altre varie sfaccettature di questo genio, la cui visione cosmica attraverso immagini esaltanti, effervescenti e fantastiche, resta sempre tuttavia molto legata alla realtà. La sua vera poesia è l’Altrove, di là dalla moralità o dall’aneddoto. L’uomo è al centro del mondo, perché è il solo che possa abbracciarne coscientemente la visione. G. ha saputo cogliere “l’insolito” della sua epoca, senza mai distaccarsi dal suo contesto organico, anzi al contrario egli ha chiarito la sostanza realista, il fondamento naturale delle contraddizioni e delle antinomie; analizzando in maniera molto precisa le strutture del “fantastico”, ha raccolto gli elementi di una poesia esuberante e sana, risolutamente ottimista, perché ricca del senso d’accordo umano e impeccabile nella sua autenticità. La conquista dell’Altrove costituisce ormai il fine ultimo delle nostre scienze e tecniche, degli uomini sono scelti e formati per un’esclusiva funzione: l’esplorazione sempre maggiore del possibile, pianeta dopo pianeta, di questo altrove che costituisce la realtà della nostra psicosi collettiva, ma per questo cosmonauta la situazione è inversa, l’insolito è sulla terra.
