The second volume is from the first edition; the first is a later printing. A nice set of Grandville's masterpiece lampooning contemporary politics and society via his animal-caricatures. The project was spearheaded by Hetzel using the pseudonym P.-J. Stahl who rallied several prominent writers to contribute texts to accompany Grandville's vignettes. The work appeared serially in its original form these volumes are from subsequent book-printings. Grandville executed no fewer than 323 illlustrations the majority being full-page plates. First Edition. "The moving force behind this book was its publisher P.-J. Hetzel who himself contributed many chapters under the pseudonym of P.-J. Stahl�Through Grandville�s animals Hetzel and his colleagues offered a witty and telling commentary on contemporary politics and personalities. Bouchot described the result as the best satire on French manners during the middle of the century recalling "the anger to which it gave rise the outbursts of laughter it provoked and the lawsuits of which it ran the risk." These allusions pass largely unnoticed today but Grandville�s animals remain as amusing as ever thanks to the wit and verve of his compositions. The types and situations he depicts are indeed "of every period and every country." "The final plate shows the artist at the zoo of the Jardin des Plantes. He is sketching the visiting creatures who in turn are peering at cages containing Hetzel Balzac Jules Janin and other authors of the Sc�nes de la vie priv�e et publique des animaux. Charming and unusual hand colored engraving from 'Les Fleurs Animes' a collection of 52 illustrations each with an accompanying story having to do with the interesting notion of reversing the comparison of human emotions to flowers. Flowers and plants are represented in human form; here tea and coffee appear as two women with garments made from the plants they represent.
