Ditchling: printed and published at S. Dominic’s Press 1924. 35 wood engravings by Eric Gill all bar 3 printed on the recto only with title below. No.21 of 150 copies. 32 x 26 cms in the original full linen and with the original printed dust jacket. A superb bright and crisp copy with only a couple of tiny tears to the dust jacket.The St Dominic’s Press produced these fabulous impression of Gill’s engravings from the original blocks without Gill’s permission in 1924. The first image is in fact a woodcut with was produced for a poster. <br>Both Evan Gill and Cleverdon state that this was pbulished in an edition of only 50 copies despite the fact there there are two variants one hand numbered n/50 and the second as here with a printed limitation statement of 150. It is interesting that like the Gleeson Library this copy bears a number below 50 so perhaps the 50 copy limitation is true. This volume is a presentation copy with a nice association to Eric Gill's 1882-1940 sculptural work; here Gill articulates the purpose and artistry of sculpture of function as opposed to aesthetic appeal. <br/><br/>Inscribed on the front wrap near the author's printed name "To Edward Maufe Sept. 1932 from &" "by Eric Gill" printed and signed "ECG" in green ink to the last page of text. Sir Edward Brantwood Maufe 1882-1974 was a friend sometime collaborator and longtime patron of Gill. No. 197 of 500 octavo size 16 pp. "The Lord's Song" is a sermon composed by the inimitable Eric Gill 1882-1940; it is a call to reaffirm free will as well as an acknowledgement of sin and spiritual responsibility in an age dominated by an industrial work force. This volume is the first book in which the Golden Cockerel Press has made use of Eric Gill's Perpetua Roman and Felicity Italic types and Gill contributes wood engravings to accompany his text in a combination of spiritual and social criticism.<br/><br/>This copy has a rather remarkable provenance as evidenced by the prior owners' bookplates to the paste-down endpapers: A. M.
