Eric Gill [Arthur Eric Rowton Gill] (1882-1940), British sculptor, artist and typographer [Lawrence William Hodson (1865-1934),
Eric Gill sculptor and typographer Two Signed Letters one 'Eric Gill' and the other 'Eric Gill osd' to Lawrence Hodson both in the same secretarial hand regarding a woodcut 'set of stations'.
On letterheads of Ditchling Common Sussex. 3 November 1920 and 10 March 1921. Both items in fair condition on lightly aged and creased paper. The second letter addressed by the secretary on the reverse with four torn stamps and postmarks to 'Mr. Lawrence Hodson Bradbourne Hall Ashbourne Derbyshire'. The 'set of stations' referred to in the first letter is likely to have been based on those executed by Gill in stone in Westminster Cathedral and completed in 1918. Letter One 3 November 1920: 1p. 12mo. After thanking Hodson for his letter Gill informs him that 'Father Delaney Father Bernard Delaney OP says he will certainly publish your article in 'Blackfriars' the journal of the English Dominicans of which he was editor and I am very pleased.' Hodson's 'suggestion that a set of stations should be made in wood cuts is already in hand last two words placed in quotation marks by Gill'. Gill 'has seen the <strong> cuts' and thinks that 'something in the same manner would certainly be effective and might be very useful'. Gill is sending Hodson a copy of 'the little book that we brought out some years ago' and he will let him know 'as soon as the bigger ones materialise'. Letter Two 10 March 1921: 1p. landscape 12mo. He thanks Hodson for another letter 'and for the note on "Dress" which I am sending on to the editor of "Blackfriars". I hope he will publish it and am glad you approved of the article.' He continues: 'I will see that a print of the large woodcut of the first "Station" is sent to you.' He concludes by informing Hodson that he will be 'very pleased to see you when you can come to Ditchling'. While chairman of the brewers W. Butler & Co. Hodson had organised the Wolverhampton Art and Industrial Exhibition of 1902. A connoisseur of the arts his collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings and library of illuminated manuscripts were auctioned by Sotheby's in 1906. Sixteen loose-leaved sheets of card printed on one side only and measuring 31.5cm x 25cm five of which are by Gill three reproducing his alphabet engravings on stone one drawn and one more brushed. Loosely inserted is a 1pp advertisement leaf for plaster casts lettering for letter cutters by Gill with thumbnail reproductions of the three stone-engraved plates. Folding 4pp advertisement for Soennecken's pens also inserted along with a 1pp advertisement for Kelemi pen #21. A trace of toning and corner creasing to the margins of several of the Gill plates. Some spotting to two other plates and some off-set toning to a third. An area of staining to the front panel of the portfolio a little rubbing to the corner tips and a touch of spotting and toning to the printed inners. A very good example of this scarce survivor of some of Gill's earliest printed work. Most uncommon. Gill first encountered Edward Johnston at the Central School of Arts and Crafts where he ran the calligraphy course and the two roomed together for a year in shared lodgings at Lincoln's Inn. A Typographical Masterpiece
Bain & Williams London 1991 'A Typographical Masterpiece' Beautifully illustrated with works by Eric Gill including archive paste-ups proofs and photographs of the production of the Gospels. This is an account by John Dreyfus of Gill's collaboration with Robert Gibbings in producing the celebrated Golden Cockerel Press edition of 'The Four Gospels' in 1931. "Through a combination of good luck and exceptional help from librarians and collectors on both sides of the Atlantic I have been able to locate a great many documents which throw new light on what went on during the planning and production of The Four Gospels by Gibbings and Gill." This edition of only 250 copies was printed by Meridan-Stinchour Press on Superfine Paper from the Mohawk Paper Mills. The duotone photographs are by Michael Arsenault. The text was composed in Linotronic Galliard designed by Matthew Carter. Main title and chapter headings set in Golden Cockerel at the Rampant Lions Press Cambridge. Golden Cockerel device on title page engraved by Robert Gibbings. Bound in Vermont by Judi Conant the book was designed by John Dreyfus. Issued with the publisher's plain unprinted dustwrapper as issued. A similar edition was published in USA for the book club of California. This volume is still sealed and RARE thus. It is beautifully bound in red cloth with gold lettering on the spine and the design on the front board is a combination of two elements by Eric Gill. The border was designed in 1931 for an edition of Aesop's Fables but not used. The lettering is an arrangement by Gill of letters he cut for the Golden Cockerel Press in 1928.The excellent text covers Gibbings and Gill at the Golden Cockerel Press The Golden Cockerel Type Planning the Edition and Producing the Edition along with some Opinions on the Edition. There is an Epilogue and an Alphabetical list of Gill's Captions as well as an Index. The large format is 34 x 24 cm and it weighs over 1 kilo. Ditchling: Saint Dominic's Press Ditchling 1916-1923. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. This is Eric Gill's personal set bound for him as two volumes and with his bookplate in the first book. All thitry-four issues with pagination per the bibliography by Taylor & Sewell pp. 143-44. Complete with wrappers where called for and including the calligraphy item by Edward Johnston in the Christmas 1916 issue. Volumes 1-4 bound in full leather with Gill's bookplate and pencil signature. Volumes 5-7 bound in quarter leather over plain black paper boards. Title page gathering for issue 33 is neatly inserted likely an error at binding. The second book is signed in pencil by Gill and dated 1925 with his note "bound by DA". Books free of markings inside except that Gill has added some changes to his essay "The Control of Industry" in the first issue and a few minor alterations in other issues. All issues complete and untrimmed only minor ordinary wear from being handled by Gill. The plain bindings are secure with spines faded. These were obviously intended to be working books. The Game was the house magazine for one of the great artistic communities of the 20th century. The magazine powerfully expressed the Catholic distributist ideas that were dear to Gill and other Ditchling members. A wonderful and unique set. <br/><br/> Saint Dominic's Press Ditchling hardcover

Waltham St Lawrence: The Golden Cockerel Press 1934. A deluxe copy from the first 50 issued in a black morocco binding and with a suite of additional engravings lacking one image. Full black morocco binding top edge gilt; a little scuffed to edges; offsetting from glue used to secure the front pastedown. Vignette title and five engravings in the text with tissue guards printed on untrimmed leaves. Signed by Enid Clay and 'Eric G' and numbered on the limitation leaf to the rear. On the final leaf is a pocket for the additional images which has been slit open along the right edge. Additionally there are loose images printed on thick paper of: Marionette; The Housewife; Benediction and The Young Girl's Room - lacking A Baby. These have two of their own paper folders labelled in a calligraphic hand: 'Eric Gill Engravings for Enid Clay's "The Constant Mistress"'. PROVENANCE: from the collection of a Palestinian woman living in Switzerland in the 1980s whose sister knew Eric Gill. A very good copy of a scarce issue of this book.
