Ex-library book with the usual stamps, stickers, etc. Binding is tight and straight and text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Book has been re-bound by the library in to strong, heavy green cloth boards that show small tears at lower corners, but little else. Interior is very very clean and bright with very heavy paper with sharp corners. The forty 4-color full page plates illustrate approximately 600 examples of ornamental designs from Ancient Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Persia, Bokhara, Samarkand, Chinese Turkestan, Persia, India, Siam, China, Japan; and from those of the Tartars, the Siberian peoples, the Lapps, the Kirghiz, the Turcomans and the peoples of the Pamir plateau. These illustrations cover mainly the peak periods of non-European civilizations, so rich in decorative ornaments.

Gründungsjubiläums des Staatlichen Bauhauses in Weimar. 1919 wurde in Weimar das Staatliche Bauhaus gegründet Anlaß für die Publikation, die Gründungs- und Aufbaujahre der legendären Kunstschule und die Leistungen eines ihrer bedeutendsten Lehrer, Johannes Itten, umfassend zu dokumentieren. Im Zentrum steht dabei das 'unbekannte Bauhaus' der Jahre 1919 - 1923 mit teils überraschenden, den gängigen Vorstellungen widersprechenden Aspekten: der Expressionismus, der dem Konstruktivismus vorausging, der Hirtenstuhl dem Stahlrohrmöbel, das Tempelherrenhaus dem würfelförmigen Zweckbau, die Mazdaznan-Lehre der Technik-Philosophie des späten Bauhauses. Ganzheitlich orientierte Lebensform, Jugendbewegung, die Idee des Gesamtkunstwerkes, Dada und nicht zuletzt das Zusammenwirken von Künstlern und Handwerkern zum gesellschaftlichen Nutzen standen am Ursprung der durch ihren nüchternen Stil berühmten Institution, deren frühe Jahre der Band erstmals in ihrer Komplexität vorstellt
