The Old Fashioned Mother Goose Melodies Complete with Magic Colored Pictures
NY: G.W. Carleton 1879. Sheppard William Ludwell. Octavo. 96ff. Features forty-eight color lift-the-flap illustrations including the title page in which the closed image illustrates the beginning of a verse and the open image depicts its conclusion. With numerous classic rhymes by Mother Goose including the full versions of Old Mother Hubbard and a rather unusual retelling of "Ten Little Indians" which adds several US-specific regional references "Six Nantucket whalers" and "Five Nevada miners" as well as two stereotypical and derogatory views of African-American youth "Four naughty colored boys" robbing an apple tree and "Two little Nigs in Florida". The illustrations are signed "WLS" in the plates leading to the conclusion that they are by William Ludwell Sheppard a southern illustrator whose drawings of African Americans are noted by Hamilton as having "a sympathetic truthfulness to nature born perhaps of the artist's Southern origin." The construction of this book makes the text block bulk only half the length of the boards resulting in structural issues when combined with youthful use. Bound in red publisher's cloth over boards with pictorial stamping in gilt and blind to upper cover and spine. Edgewear and soiling to boards with minor interior soiling and foxing; otherwise a sturdy near fine copy. G.W. Carleton unknown

The Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of St. Matthew Chapters 5 6 7
Worcester MA: Achille J. St. Onge 1973. Conway Stephen. 55pp. The text is printed with large ornamental initials in red by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen. In a striking designer binding by Stephen Conway evoking ancient wood and stone. Conway writes that his bindings "have a tactile quality in keeping with the three dimensional qualities of the book" and "a sort of earthy minimalist look hinting at the content." The central panel of the covers is comprised of a plinth with three steps covered in parchment stained with tones of copper and bronze. In the center is a cross cut from vellum. The four surrounding panels are covered with hand-painted paste-paper patterned with wood grain and sealed with a matte wax finish. The panels are slightly separated revealing underlays of black text between them. Conway also painted the endpapers with textural shades of brown and black giving them the appearance of wood and bark. The spine is gilt-titled mahogany morocco. Following his belief that the box in which a book is housed is part of the overall work and serves to enhance the viewer's experience the book sits in a felt-lined compartment between the steps of a larger three-level plinth covered in hand-painted parchment. Conway was named a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2000 and his work is held in collections worldwide including the National Library of Scotland and the British Library. Extremely fine. 2 1/2 by 1 3/4; 64x43mm. Achille J. St. Onge unknown

Poestenkill NY: Kaldewey Press 1990. Tall folio. 32pp. From an edition of 55 this is one of twenty deluxe copies. Illustrated with ten paper pulp images of Jewish symbols such as the Star of David the Torah pointer and the shofar. The Various Birds: Fifty-six Varieties. The Color of the Bird Shape of the Body
Japan c. mid-nineteenth century. Small quarto. 27ff. A handmade book of delicate Japanese brush paintings of common birds ranging from sparrows and songbirds to ducks and other fowl. The paintings are executed in a style similar to sumi-e. They are predominantly monochromatic with subtle gradations of black ink accented with washes of brown yellow and red. The illustrations stand alone on most of the pages but a few including one of a majestic pheasant are accompanied by descriptions in Japanese. Each page is comprised of a double sheet measuring 10 3/16 by 14 1/4 inches and most of the paintings stretch across the page spread. The only clue to the painter's identity is a note in Japanese on the front wrapper which explains that the illustrations were "painted by the next-door neighbor -- during the weekdays." The note also indicates that the book was owned by Goshodo a bookseller. It seems likely that the paintings were given as a neighborly gift and made into a book. Some light wear and soiling to covers faint soiling to a few pages else a very fine collection of paintings. unknown
