Barth (füllt) eine wichtige Lücke, zumal sich der Autor nicht damit begnügt, die verschiedenen Techniken der Perlenstickerei zu beschreiben, sondern zu ihren Wurzeln vordringt. Dies wiederum war nur möglich, indem er Originalstücke in deutschen und amerikanischen Museen untersuchte, um die technischen Details zu studieren. Auf dieser Grundlage war er imstande, die unterschiedlichen Techniken selbst nachzuvollziehen und originalgetreue Reproduktionen bzw. stilgerechte Nachschöpfungen herzustellen. Erst die exakte Kenntnis der vielfältigen Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten und Stilentwicklungen ist die Voraussetzung für eine sachlich richtige und trotzdem allgemeinverständliche Darstellung, die in diesem Fall durch vorzügliche und aussagekräftige Zeichnungen des Autors ergänzt wird. Mit den in diesem Buch vollzogenen Analysen erweist sich Barth als versierter Fachmann auf dem Gebiet der indianischen Perlenstickerei, der nicht nur die einzelnen Techniken beherrscht, sondern auch deren historische Tiefe auslotet.
