Very good condition. An exquisite publication with color woodblock prints printed in subtle shades of black brown red green and blue of the famous places in Kyoto the old capital of Japan. The wood block prints are printed on thin Japanese paper without doubling of the paper; this is why in the digital image the text from the adjoining pages shows through the paper BUT THERE IS NO OFFSETTING on the images. There is a large folding map of Kyoto and another of the area around Kyoto. In addition to historical sites there is information on kilns and an introduction to pottery ware and textiles. This collection beautifully evokes the character of this ancient capital at the turn of the twentieth century. . unknown

A GROUP OF THREE POLYCHROME EROTIC WOODCUT PRINTS.
Japan n.d. ca 1830-40's. Three prints two from an erotic book each in 2 parts: 20.5 x 14; 3rd is 19 x 14 cm. and is probably a later work from about the Meiji period or 1880's. The first two are slightly discoloredthe last one is clean. . . . THREE ORIGINAL COLOR WOODBLOCK EROTIC PRINTS . . . The first two prints are from what is probably the same erotic book Shunpon both show a couple engaged in love-making. Each has text and comments of the lovers while engaged in love-making. . One pair of pages are re-backed the other not they are from about the 1830-40's. . The third item is newer and quite clean. It shows a couple under a Kimono while the man caresses her vagina. This is probably a Meiji work from about 1870-80's. Its quite clean and bright with good image. . All are tipped on to a hand-made Washi paper backing sheet which is 17 x 20 cm. . Good examples from the "Shunga" erotic woodblock prints genre. . . unknown

Mostly English language text some French: the original French-language Preface by Frank Dunand follows an English translation and the title of each print is also given in French. Quarto 28 x 22.5 cm full brown leather with gilt title to spine. Housed in the publisher's wood-veneered slipcase with matching leather trim. Alfred Baur Swiss 1865-1951 formed his collection of Japanese prints over forty years from 1909 through 1949. Along with his collections of Japanese lacquer netsuke and sword fittings and Chinese imperial ceramic ware jades and snuff bottles it is the nucleus of he Baur Foundation Museum of Far Eastern art. Reliure demi basane, dos lisse orné de filets, titre et tomaison, frappés à l'or fin. Fleurons estampés à froid. Bon état, interieur avec rousseurs. Ex-libris armoirié polychrome et doré de la bibliothèque d'Octave Borelli-Bey (1849-1911), avocat international puis chef du contentieux au ministère des Finances. Il fit une grande partie de sa carrière en Egypte où il devient un spécialiste de la législation égyptienne. Il est alors propriétaire du journal le "Bosphore Egyptien" et est nommé Bey. Durant vingt ans, il est l'un des personnages européens les plus influents en Egypte. 2 tomes de l'Année Religieuse des Théophilantropes publiés la même année par Jean-Baptiste Chemin-Dupontès (1760 -1852), l'un de ses principaux fondateurs en compagnie de Haüy, le père du minéralogiste. Secte déiste et morale soutenue par certains représentant du Directoire, comme La Révellière-Lépeaux qui lui fit obtenir la jouissance des principales églises parisiennes, la théophilanthropie s'inspire du déisme de Voltaire et de Rousseau, et par certains aspects du culte de l'Etre suprême.
