In his 1969 review Roger Ebert called The Creatures "a complex and nearly hypnotic study of the way fact is made into fiction. It seems to operate on many levels but in fact it operates on only one illustrating how fantasy reality and style are simultaneously kept suspended in the mind of a creative writer." Count Dakkar Lionel Barrymore the benevolent scientist-leader of a volcanic island is attacked by the evil despot Baron Falon Montagu Love leading to a submarine chase in which they discover a race of water-bound humanoids. Fraught with a difficult production the film began shooting in 1926 but due to various problems it would take three more years before its 1929 release. Lauded as an impressive cinematic feat the astronomical price tag over $1 million in 1929 all but guaranteed the film would be a financial disaster at the box office turning studios off science fiction for many years. "The Mysterious Island" was at the forefront of multiple technological advances a part-talkie film shot entirely in Technicolor. All color copies were believed lost but in 2013 one existing color print was discovered in Prague and has since been restored through a collaboration between US film experts and the Czech National Film Archive. 8 x 10 inches. Born into a poor-white-trash Southern family Ruby intends to improve her lot by marrying into wealth. Her casual beau Boake Tackman Heston considers Ruby unfit for marriage but prosperous businessman Jim Gentry Malden is eager and willing to make her his wife. Jim Gentry dies in an accident and the consensus of opinion is that he was killed by the covetous Ruby. For some reason this ignites a passion in Boake and he renews his torrid romance with the widow Gentry. Ruby's crazed brother Jewel James Anderson puts an end to this affair with a shotgun provoking a violent response from Ruby and a "Lady or the Tiger"-esque ending.
