Koch's B movie noir "The Girl in Black Stockings" despite it being a low-budget "second feature" film is surprisingly enjoyable mostly due to its exceptional cast.<br/><br/>LA lawyer David Hewson Lex Barker arrives at a Utah lodge for a peaceful vacation only to find women being mutilated and murdered and everyone is suspect. Featuring a young Anne Bancroft as pretty young Beth Dixon switchboard operator and assistant to the bitter wheelchair-bound lodge owner Edmund Parry Ron Randell. Mamie Van Doren is Harriet Ames the flirtatious bombshell of course and "the Queen of the B's" the fabulous Marie Windsor is Julia Parry Edmund's dutiful companion and sister.<br/><br/>Filmed in and around the Parry Lodge in Kanab Utah. The Parry lodge opened in the early 1930s by the Parry brothers was built to lodge Hollywood film crews filming early Westerns in the area and was popular among movie stars of Hollywood's golden age.<br/><br/>Set in Kanab Utah shot on location in Kanab Utah and Fredonia Arizona. <br/><br/>8 x 10 inches. Rare and important draft shooting script for the Hollywood film The Mysterious Island. Loosely adapted from Jules Verne's science fiction novel L’ile mystérieuse this MGM production - a part-talkie - was filmed in two-strip Technicolour and had a checkered production history: shooting had commenced in 1926 but the film was not released until 5 October 1929. Lucien Hubbard 1888-1971 was officialy credited as the writer of the screenplay and as director even though scenes shot earlier by Maurice Tourneur and Benjamin Christensen - both removed from the project by Irving Thalberg because of their painstaking approach to filmmaking - were used in the final version. Lucien Hubbard is today perhaps best-known as the producer of the silent film Wings 1927 for which he won an Academy Award. Until recently a single ten-minute reel with a colour sequence in the UCLA Film and Television Archive was thought to be the only portion of The Mysterious Island that had survived in Technicolour although complete black-and-white prints had always been known. Then in 2013 experts from George Eastman House discovered that a colour print had been preserved in the Czech National Film Archive; the restored colour print of the film was screened at the 33rd Pordenone Silent Film Festival in October 2014. The cast of The Mysterious Island included Lionel Barrymore Count Andre Dakkar Jane Daly Jacqueline Gadsden Sonia Lloyd Hughes Nikolai Montagu Love Falon Harry Gribbon Mikhail Snitz Edwards Anton Gibson Gowland Dmitry Dolores Brinkman Teresa and Major Roup an underwater creature. Art direction was by Cedric Gibbons with technical effects by James Basevi Louis H. Tolhurst and Irving R. Ries. Jacqueline Gadsden 1900-1986 was an American film actress during the silent era. Her most famous role was in It 1927 in which she starred alongsde Clara Bow. In 1924 she had married William Harry Daly and in fact she made two other films in the same year that The Mysterious Island was released 1929 - one for Columbia and another for MGM - in which she was billed under the name Jane Daly. Vintage screening invitation for the 1980 film illustrated by Ralph Steadman on the recto with film credits on the verso.<br /> <br /> More than a little loosely based on Hunter S. Thompson's obituary for his closest associate Oscar Zeta Acosta a.k.a. Dr. Gonzo "The Banshee Screams for Buffalo Meat" which appeared in October 1977 issue of "Rolling Stone." <br /> <br /> A film that despite being an unholy mess represents in retrospect an intersection of ideas and talent as well as the first of many messy attempts to commit to celluloid the basically un-filmable life and work of Hunter S. Thompson. <br /> <br /> Bill Murray at this time little more than a droll comedic sensation arguably made the first step toward becoming the four-dimensional icon he is today though not necessarily by intention. Both Murray and Thompson had serious concerns about the quality of Kaye's script and at the beginning of filming both Thompson and Ralph Steadman came onto the set as "executive consultants." Though the author says he did little other than "wander around and fire machine guns" his influence on Murray was profound. The actor became obsessed with his idol and by all accounts became one with him. During production Murray and Thompson engaged in a series of dangerous one-upmanship contests including a Houdini-inspired stunt where Thompson tied Murray to a chair and threw him into a swimming pool. Murray nearly drowned before Thompson pulled him out. The pair's obsession with the film's poor script and continuity led to a hasty final addition of a voice-over narration and two explanatory scenes at the film's end. Three days prior to release a press screening was canceled because the film was still being edited. <br /> <br /> When Murray returned to the Saturday Night Live set in the fall of 1980 he was still immersed in character complete with long black cigarette holder dark glasses and nasty habits. One of the show's writers said that Murray .".was not Bill Murray he was Hunter Thompson. You couldn't talk to him without talking to Hunter Thompson."
