(STANDARD OIL) CLARK, Warner
Original Photograph Album.
V.p.: N.p. 1920-1943. Contemporary album of string-tied stiff wrappers. Contains numerous documents invitations letters telegrams etc. and photographs 76 of this California oil man and Standard Oil Vice-president. Sizes from 11 x 7 3.4 inches to 4 1/2 x 3 inches. Corner mounts though many are pasted in. Many of the photographs are captioned. Generally in very good condition although a couple of leaves have come loose and a few photographs and ephemeral pieces have become unmoored. Warner Clark was a go-getter and a bootstrap kind of man so favored in those decades. A native Californian he was a graduate of the second class of the Modoc Union High School. In an article about him in a Modoc paper we read- Those who knew him then and know him now are proud of the fact that he attained his high school and university education by his own persistent efforts; that is he worked his own way through high school and college doing whatever honorable jobs were available. This album concerns his career at Standard Oil in California and his personal life during that time. He seems to have been a mining engineer and worked his way up from assistant manager to Vice-president of the California Company Standard Oil. The album starts with numerous photographs of the Santa Ynez Valley Gaviota Santa Barbara wreck of a destroyer off the Santa Barbara Coast and 14 photographs of wells some spewing. There are various clippings etc about the Kern Ventura and Santa Barbara oil fields and one suspects his career began there. As he rose through the ranks of the company the album becomes more bureaucratic with pasted in inserts of lecture announcements he gave to other oil-men company letters announcements of his promotion and move to Dallas 1928 and his return to San Francisco 1931. In Texas he had a modern house constructed that was designed by David R. Williams a specialist in Texas architecture. There are numerous announcements invitations etc. from the Dallas Wildcat Committee of the Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association. Numerous dinners and invitations to the links. He spent some time developing oil fields in Ecuador and there is a letter from Managing Vice-president commending him on his work there as well as a few photographs taken of wells in the country. He spent the remainder of his career in San Francisco. Unfortunately there is no picture of his house. The album also has many family related photographs and ephemera. He had extended family that lived in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains and in the Bay area. His wife was was something of a culture vulture and was active in the Elizabeth Holloway School of the Theater. She was also very active politically and was elected President of the California League of Women Voters. The last dated item in the album is a printed announcement that their son had joined the Navy during WWII. There are two original pieces of art; one of which is shown with this listing. N.p. unknown
