‎Extraordinaire recueil réunissant l'édition originale de deux ouvrages (le plus important rédigé par l'érudit protestant d'origine bourguignonne Claude Saumaise) consacrés au sujet de la coupe et de la longueur des cheveux ! Imprimé en gros caractères, ces deux écrits se rattachent "à une polémique bizarre qui passionna et tint divisés durant des années les plus fameux docteurs de l'église évangélique hollandaise. Le roi Louis XIII, qui portait toute sa chevelure, avait introduit et fait prévaloir la mode des cheveux longs. Cette innovation choqua bon nombre de ministres protestants. S'appuyant sur un passage de la première épître de Paul au Corinthiens, ils tonnèrent en chaire contre une pratique qui leur paraissait entachée d'hérésie, et songèrent sérieusement à exclure de leurs temples les fauteurs du scandale. Un professeur d'Utrecht, Charles de Maets, se mit à la tête de cette croisade, et déduisit ses raisons dans un copieux recueil [ ... ] D'autres voix s'élevèrent en faveur de la tolérance [ Polyander rédigea la consultation que l'on trouve in fine dans ce volume ] Saumaise n'était pas homme à laisser passer une si belle occasion de déployer son érudition. Tout d'abord il se déclara le champion de la liberté des coiffures, et descendit dans l'arène armé [ de ce ] formidable factum [ ... ] Toute cette érudition fut dépensée en pure perte. Il se convertit à l'ascétisme avec son épouse, et devient l'un des plus chers compagnons de Saint Honorat. Il mourra prêtre. On a conservé de lui neuf lettres et deux traités. Dans "Du Gouvernement de Dieu", véritable traité sur la Providence, dans lequel il montre comment la crise de l'Empire romain, corrompu, n'est pas le signe de l'abandon par Dieu, mais bien au contraire le signe que Dieu agit en permanence, pour notre salut, tel un médecin habile dont les gestes ne sont pas toujours compris par le malade. Dans le "Livre de Timothée à l'Eglise", où il dénonce l'avarice des chrétiens. ‎Summary The diffusion of Christianity along the Silk Road from Iraq and Iran to China in the premodern era has attracted scholarly attention in the West since the discovery of the famous Xian (Nestorian) Monument c. 1623. This initial discovery was dismissed as a Jesuit forgery by Voltaire, Edward Gibbon and many other scholars of the Enlightenment. However, its authenticity has been more than vindicated by the discovery of genuine (Nestorian / Jingjiao) Christian texts in Chinese from Dunhuang and in Syriac, Sogdian and Old Turkish from Turfan (Bulayq) at the beginning of the last century. Besides confirming the existence of a Tang era Chinese Christian church (Jingjiao), additional archaeological and literary evidence has accumulated of a Christian presence in China during the later Song and Yuan periods (Yelikewenjiao). These churches were the subject of a conference of international specialists in Hong Kong in 2015. The current volume of eleven articles has grown out of the papers presented there. ‎Rare exemplaire de cette édition originale, qui évoque ce "plus grand Sillon", lancé par Marc Sangnier en février 1907, visant à « réaliser un nouveau centre d’unité morale » en ralliant « toutes les forces qu’anime consciemment ou inconsciemment l’esprit chrétien » (protestants ou libres penseurs). On joint une très intéressante lettre tapuscrite signée de René Lemaire, à en-tête de la caisse ouvrière du Sillon d'Epernay, qui évoque le développement du Sillon dans son secteur, de l'attitude de l'Eglise et des évêques, soutiens ou opposants au Sillon, et parle de Marc Sangnier que le rédacteur de la missive a rencontré plusieurs fois.
