Brown, John (1722-1787).
A COMPENDIOUS VIEW OF NATURAL AND REVEALED RELIGION IN SEVEN BOOKS.
pp. xxiv, 650 + 3 p. Publisher's advertisement, including a Proposal to publish the Letters of Samuel Rutherford. Old foxing and age stain. 8vo. Contemporary full leather binding, worn. Boards almost detached. FIRST EDITION. A note to a modern reprint of this important and scarce indicates the regard in which he is still held: John Brown (1722-1787) of Haddington, was a leading Scottish minister in the early eighteenth-century. He was a gifted preacher, and prolific writer of theology. He began life in obscure poverty, without advantage of wealth, position, title, or education. He taught himself Greek while working in the fields. He became a man of deep spiritual experience with skill in preaching the doctrines of free grace and piety. This Compendious View, is based on his seminary lectures. It contains more than 26,000 proof texts and numerous exegetical insights. This single volume of Reformed systematic theology is rich in content and an indispensable tool for students, pastors, and professors of theology. "Eighteenth Century Scotland produced many noted ministers, scholars and educators, but none greater, or so greatly loved in his own day or afterwards, as John Brown of Haddington" - Joel R. Beeke. Though the Library of Congress apparently once held this First Edition, OCLC does not record any other U.S. library as having it. This original edition is very scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W151

Brown, Peter
AUTHORITY AND THE SACRED Aspects of the Christianisation of the Roman World
Gift inscription on title page else Fine. ; Canto original series; 0.27 x 5.72 x 8.52 Inches; 107 pages; The Christianization of the Roman world lies at the root of modern Europe. Peter Brown's fascinating study examines the factors that proved decisive and the compromises that made the emergence of the Christian conception of existence possible: how the old gods of the Roman Empire could be reinterpreted as symbols to further the message of the Church. Peter Brown also shows how Christian holy men were less representative of a triumphant faith than negotiators of a working compromise between the new faith and traditional ways of dealing with the supernatural worlds.

The Cambridge History of Christianity ; Volume VII Enlightenment, Reawakening, and Revolution, 1660-1815
Small quarto in glossy burgundy jacket; xiv, 678 pages : illustrations, maps ; 24 cm; bibliographical references (pages 603-651) and index. "During the tumultuous period of world history from 1660 to 1815, three complex movements combined to bring a fundamental cultural reorientation to Europe and North America, and ultimately to the wider world. The Enlightenment transformed views of nature and of the human capacity to master nature. The religious reawakenings brought a revival of heart-felt, experiential Christianity. Finally revolution, the political and social upheavals of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, challenged established ideas of divine-right monarchies and divinely ordained social hierarchies, and promoted more democratic government, notions of human rights, and religious toleration. A new religious climate emerged, in which people were more likely to look to their own feelings and experiences for the basis of their faith. During this same period, Christianity spread widely around the world as a result of colonialism and missions, and responded in diverse ways to its encounters with other cultures and religious traditions." óPublisher. / Contents: Continental Catholic Europe /; Nigel Aston --; Continental Protestant Europe /; Hartmut Lehmann --; Great Britain and Ireland /; J.C.D. Browning, Robert
THE EMPEROR JULIAN
Dustjacket is protected in mylar. Light soiling to textblock. The first 20 pages are creased but with no loss to text else VG. Adhesives stain to front free-page. ; 256 pages; Julian is called by Christians "The Apostate" because they believe he converted from Christianity to Paganism. He himself, as attested to in private letters between him and the Rhetorician Libanius, had Christianity forced on him as a child by his cousin Constantius II, who was a zealot Christian and would have not tolerated a pagan relative, but Julian had never really accepted any religion until his reading of the Homeric poems, some of the most important texts for the Greek religion. After this conversion to Hellenism he devoted his life to protecting and restoring the fame and security of this more ancient tradition as well as other religious traditions such as Judaism from Christian persecution. After gaining the purple, Julian started a religious reformation of the state, which, in his intentions, was to give back its lost strength to the Roman State. He supported the restoration of the old Roman faith, based on polytheism. Julian reduced the influence of Christian bishops in public offices. The lands taken by the Church were to be returned to their original owners, and the bishops lost the privilege to travel for free, at expenses of the State.
