Imprimé en gros caractères, ces deux écrits se rattachent "à une polémique bizarre qui passionna et tint divisés durant des années les plus fameux docteurs de l'église évangélique hollandaise. Le roi Louis XIII, qui portait toute sa chevelure, avait introduit et fait prévaloir la mode des cheveux longs. Cette innovation choqua bon nombre de ministres protestants. S'appuyant sur un passage de la première épître de Paul au Corinthiens, ils tonnèrent en chaire contre une pratique qui leur paraissait entachée d'hérésie, et songèrent sérieusement à exclure de leurs temples les fauteurs du scandale. Un professeur d'Utrecht, Charles de Maets, se mit à la tête de cette croisade, et déduisit ses raisons dans un copieux recueil [ ... ] D'autres voix s'élevèrent en faveur de la tolérance [ Polyander rédigea la consultation que l'on trouve in fine dans ce volume ] Saumaise n'était pas homme à laisser passer une si belle occasion de déployer son érudition. Tout d'abord il se déclara le champion de la liberté des coiffures, et descendit dans l'arène armé [ de ce ] formidable factum [ ... ] Toute cette érudition fut dépensée en pure perte. 2 vol. in-12 reliure de l'époque pleine basane marron, dos à 5 nerfs orné, Chez Guillaume Valleyre, Paris, 1700, 19 ff., 330 pp. ; 1 f., 8 pp., 5 ff., 341 pp. Probablement originaire de Cologne ou de Trèves, fin lettré, Salvien (circa 405-451) s'installe dans le sud-est de la Gaule avec son épouse Palladia et leur enfant. Il se convertit à l'ascétisme avec son épouse, et devient l'un des plus chers compagnons de Saint Honorat. Il mourra prêtre. On a conservé de lui neuf lettres et deux traités. Dans "Du Gouvernement de Dieu", véritable traité sur la Providence, dans lequel il montre comment la crise de l'Empire romain, corrompu, n'est pas le signe de l'abandon par Dieu, mais bien au contraire le signe que Dieu agit en permanence, pour notre salut, tel un médecin habile dont les gestes ne sont pas toujours compris par le malade. Dans le "Livre de Timothée à l'Eglise", où il dénonce l'avarice des chrétiens. This work was written with the intention of being a history of the past 162 years of the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox community describing its spiritual and social leaders both clergical and laymen i.e. patriarchs, metropolitans, patriarchal delegates, chorepiscopuses, and the monks and priests, deacons, teachers and the board of directors, all who gave their worthy service and their ministry activities to be presented to you, worthy readers; and we do so with great pleasure. Around the year 1844, under the leadership of Mor Korillos (Patriarch Yakup II.), a few Syrian Orthodox families settled in Istanbul. Today there are nearly three thousand Syrian Orthodox families who have created their own niche in the mosaic which is Istanbul. Through the warm relationship that they developed amongst the local people, and in full co-operation with other citizens, they have given service worthy of the honor and glory that is Great Istanbul with their rich cultural, business and industrial activities. Today the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox Diocese holds great importance among other Syrian communities throughout the world. Istanbul had an important place in the history of the Byzantines and the Ottomans and today continues to be an important city for Turkey and the world alike. It has also attracted the interest of Syrian Fathers since the time of the second Ecumenical Council held in Constantinople (modern day Istanbul) in the year 381 AD. During the Ottoman era, however, the Syrian patriarchs came to Istanbul to receive the firman (imperial edict) from the Ottoman Sultans in dealing with the affairs of the community. The first part in two sections - Life and Death of Our Blessed Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ followed by The Lives of the Fathers and Other Learned and Famous Divines from Christ's time. The second part has a separate title-page for The Lives of Many Eminent Christians Which Have Lived from the Primitive Times to the Present Age stating it to be the 2nd edition and is divided into two "Books" which are firstly the Lives of Christian Emperors Kings and Sovereign Princes and secondly the Lives of Christians of an Inferior Rank the to this present Age. Full leather binding with banded spine and simple decoration. Leather is worn and is torn at the corners. The internal front hinge is wholly broken the title-page to the first part is missing and the last two printed leaves at the rear are torn across with the bottom parts missing. There are illustraitons portraits and decorations throughout. Pages are a little darkened but are otherwise clean Present are: the Author's Dedicatory Epistle to the Right Honourable Philip Lord Wharton Baron of Wharton in the County of Westmorland And to the Lady Ann Wharton His Pious and Vertuous Consort and dated "From My Study in Hammersmith" Aug 2 1675 this epistle is detached darkened and repaired at the bottom edge of the first page unpaginated 3; the Author's Epistle to the Christian Reader dated 1649 2; To the Christian Reader from Edmond Calamy 2; To the Christian Reader from Simeon Ash and John Wall dated 1649 4; Greek verse with decorated header 1; verses to Samuel Clark from John Fuller Guiliem Jenkyn Sam. There are discrete paper repairs to a tear on page 377/378. The second part contains: A Table of all the Principal things contained in the Lives of the Fathers and latter Divines 4; Title page for the Second Part Book 1; the Epistle to the reader 2; verses etc. to S Clark 4; The Lives of Christian Emperors Kings and Soveraign Princes 116pp; An Alphabetical Table of all the chief things contained in this first part of the Second Volume 4; Title Page of the Second Part Book 2 and Second part 104pp Table to Second part 4 - pages are torn across about two-thirds of the way down and the lower parts of both of theses pages are missing. Full leather with worn corners and small amounts of loss at spine ends and short tears in leather on rear marbled end-papers the internal front joint is wholly split and the internal rear joint is cracked but held by cords the covers are firmly attached to the spine. The internal binding is sound except as noted the pages are a little darkened. Pagination: 4 Dedication 4 Epistle & Tables 16 504 Table 4 8 116 4 104 4 6. Contains many black and white illustrations.
