Bunyan John 1628 1688
GRACE ABOUNDING TO THE CHIEF OF SINNERS; or a Brief and Faithful Relation of the Exceeding Mercy of God in Christ to his poor servant John Bunyan. Wherein is particularly shewed the manner of his conversion his fight and trouble for sin his dreadful.
London: Printed for F. Smith at the Elephant and Castle near the Royal Exchange in Cornhill At 1s bound n.d. ca. 1680-9. The Sixth Edition Corrected and Much Enlarged by the Author 14.5 cm x 8 cm octavo signatures in 8s pp. 10 1-110 then 113-172 irregular pagination though text and register continuous and complete original full sheepskin binding. Fore-edge to first 7 leaves cropped and lightly chipped with slight loss of text 5.5 cm horizontal closed tear to title-page pages tanned some soiling and minor staining; in a contemporary and school boy hand are the ink notes and signature of: "Isaac Walton His Book Anno Dominy sic 1696" on both the versos and rectos of the pastedown endpapers which are not attached to the boards. Covers are scuffed and rubbed and the corners rounded. Respectable copy of this scarce seventeenth-century Bunyan classic. "Bunyan was arrested in 1660 and imprisoned-for more than eleven years. Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners written during this imprisonment is the spiritual autobiography of Bunyan the traveling tinker who became the eminent preacher and author. It is in the genre of Augustine's Confessions and Thomas a Kempis's Imitation of Christ. Those who have read both Grace Abounding and The Pilgrim's Progress will realize that The Pilgrim's Progress in substantial measure is the same life as that described in Grace Abounding but in allegory rather than straightforward narrative." - CCEL Online. Wing CD-ROM 1996 B5524 for 3rd edition. Unable to locate a copy of this 6th edition printed for F. Smith at the Elephant and Castle. Francis Smith published most if not all the works which Bunyan wrote while in prison. He himself was imprisoned again and again as a 'fanatic' because he would publish 'dangerous books'. He would have published 'Grace Abounding' but was in prison when it was issued. . Full Leather. Very Good. Printed for F. Smith at the Elephant and Castle near the Royal Exchange in Cornhill, At 1s bound, n.d. [ca. 1680-9?]. The Sixth Hardcover
