‎Circa 1930. 1930. Very good. - Black-and-white 5-1/8 inch high by 3-3/8 inch wide portrait clipped from a magazine and mounted on a piece of cream-colored paper 8 inches high by 4 inches wide. Inscribed and signed on the mount below the portrait: "This is an absurd caricature / Paul E. More." The bottom edge of the mount is slightly darkened with a very light crease. Very good. <p>It is not quite clear why More finds this head-and-shoulders portrait so offensive unless it is that his nose is brightly lit and the left side of his face is in Stygian darkness and almost completely obscured.<p>Paul Elmer More 1864-1937 was an American literary critic essayist and Christian apologist. More was known for his "Shelburne Essays" begun in 1904 and eventually published in eleven volumes. He also wrote several books on Greek philosophy. In his critical writings he admired classical English authors who displayed a "deep-rooted sense of moral responsibility". More saw the decline of Christian culture as entailing intellectual as well as moral collapse and in the last fifteen years of his life he wrote works of Christian apologetics including "The Christ of the New Testament" 1924 Christ the Word" 1927 and "The Catholic Faith" 1931. This translation was made from the tenth German edition which had in turn been completely revised and rewritten by Georg Fohrer. Six pages of bibliographic information at the front and a further 14 page bibliographic supplement at the back along with a 5 page index of scripture passages and a 4 page selective subject index. Previous owner's name stamped on the front free end paper and the title page otherwise very clean with a sound binding and showing only mild wear to the spine tips.
