The complete five volume first edition thus large paper edition.Illustrated with three plates to Volume I five plates each to Volumes II III and V and four plates to Volume IV. Collated bound without two plates to Volume I and one plate to Volume IV. Additionally bound without the half-titles.These plates are the work of painter and illustrator Robert Smirke whose paintings works were often engraved and used to illustrated editions of such works as 'Don Quixote' and 'Gil Blas'.In this edition cleric and miscellany writer Edward Forster has translated Antoine Galland's enormously popular French edition of the tales into English.'Arabian Nights' or 'One Thousand and One Nights' is a collection of folk tales from the Middle East. It was collected over centuries with the roots of the tales being traced from Greek Indian Arabic Persian Turkish and Jewish folklore. The tales are being told by Scheherazade to the King Shahryar in a bid to save her life. After discovering his wife was cheating on him he killed her and vowed to marry a new virgin every day and then behead them the next. In this vein he had killed one-thousand and one women before marrying Scheherazade. Scheherazade entices the King by telling him a story on their first night together pausing halfway through as the sun came up. The King being absorbed by the story keeps Scheherazade alive eager to hear more from her.Bookplate of William Russell Griffiths to the front paste downs. In a full straight grain morocco binding. Externally rubbed. Minor bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spines resulting in a small amount of loss and lifting to the tail of the spines. A few light marks to the boards and spines. Front hinge of Volume I is strained. Front hinge of Volumes II and V are starting. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Tidemark to the rear endpaper and rear paste down of Volume I. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean with a few scattered spots. 'The Hope of the Katzekopes' was written by Reverend Paget with the intention of guiding young minds towards a more wholesome morality as the author believed that this was lacking in other fiction at the time. It was intended to exercise empathy in children and to guide them away from selfishness. Written by Reverend Francis Edward Paget who was the chapplain to the bishop of Bath and Wells and who restored Elford Church. Some of his other works include 'Lucretia' 'The Pageant' 'Tales of the Village Children' and 'Some Records of the Ashtead Estate and of its Howard Possessors'. With six illustrated head pieces throughout. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally sound. Light dampstaining to the boards causing discolouration. A couple of light markings to the boards. Minor sunning to the spine. Small amount of bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Rear hinge is strained. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown '1898'. Prior owner's tidy sketching of the Union Jack to the font pastedown. Light offsetting to the recto to the front endpaper and to the verso to the rear endpaper. Prior owner's label to the verso to the front endpaper 'John & Christie Dore 18 Whitehall Watchet Somerset TA23 0BD'. Prior owner's ink inscription to the half title page 'To . McClitock with . love 5th of Dec 1914'. Internally generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot and handling mark. Textblock from pages 17 to 96 have been cut to the bottom to the fore edge. Puncture mark through the textblock however not affecting text. Page 1/2 is lifting but remains attached. It appears the young Reverend is newly installed in Clinton Congregational Church and there are immediate problems he must deal with. In neat tight script Rev. Ihison reveals immediately of his writing a Mr. Duncan refusing the pastoral position in Benton Harbor Congregational Church. He further details all his contacts congregants welcoming him new purchases and moving into his new home with his wife Ellen. Local historians and collectors will delight as the Reverend fully names all his contacts visitors and occasions attended. There are a great number of entries dealing with his personal economy.
