It argues that the order's unique liturgical tradition, one which remained distinctive even after the Council of Trent, was crucial to their self-understanding. ISBN 9782503524191.‎ ‎The multifaceted Robert of Arbrissel (ca. 1045-1116) is best remembered as the founder of Fontevraud, a monastery of men and women under the direction of an abbess. A restless nonconformist, Robert was both famous and infamous in his own lifetime and has been a subject of debate ever since. In this book an international team of scholars - Jacques Dalarun, Genevieve Giordanengo, Armelle Le Huerou, Jean Longere, Dominique Poirel, and Bruce L. Venarde - present all known medieval sources concerning Robert of Arbrissel. The authors have created critical editions of materials including hagiography, correspondence, statutes, charters, and various short texts in verse and prose illustrating Robert's life and memory. To facilitate broad access to these materials, the entire dossier is translated into French and English. The authors' purpose, then, is not to offer the last word on Robert of Arbrissel, but to make available in one volume the materials that will promote further research and new interpretations of this controversial medieval Christian. Fils de pretre, cure du village breton d'Arbrissel, archipretre du diocese de Rennes, ermite en foret de Craon, engage dans la fondation de la communaute de chanoines de La Roe, predicateur itinerant, Robert d'Arbrissel est surtout celebre pour avoir fonde a Fontevraud, en 1101, un monastere d'hommes et de femmes dont il decida, en 1115, de confier la direction a une abbesse. Ce personnage exceptionnel, symbole conteste de la reforme societale et ecclesiale du tournant des xie et xiie siecles, a ete l'objet des plus vifs debats historiographiques. Pourtant, les sources qui nous informent de son parcours n'etaient pour la plupart connues, sur des bases incertaines, que par des editions du xviie siecles et elles n'avaient jamais ete assemblees en un volume. Reparties en trois sections - Legendes, Ecrits, Temoignages -, toutes les pieces repertoriees sur Robert d'Arbrissel sont ici presentees, editees, annotees et simultanement traduites en francais et en anglais : ses deux Vies, l'une due a Baudri de Bourgueil, l'autre au frere Andre, et le bref miracle de Rouen ; les statuts originaux qu'il edicta pour Fontevraud, son exhortation a la comtesse Ermengarde de Bretagne, les chartes qui furent redigees en son nom ; les lettres critiques que Marbode de Rennes et Geoffroy de Vendome lui adresserent, le poeme que lui dedia Galon de Leon apres sa mort, les nombreuses mentions qui temoignent de sa vie puis de son souvenir. There is a primary but not exclusive focus on the English Province, which to date has received at best unbalanced attention. While the fundamental ambitions and ideals of Carthusianism formulated, articulated, and lived by the disciples of St Bruno between the late eleventh and the thirteenth centuries changed very little, the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries witnessed developments stimulated by and often commensurate with the progress of external culture. In such areas as devotional practice, literature, art and architecture, patronage, and monastic-lay relations generally, the houses of the order grew increasingly sophisticated: in some cultural spheres Carthusians were in the vanguard. The late Middle Ages thus offer rich opportunities for assessment of how a religious organization defined and justified by essentially reactionary conventions responded to constant forinsec evolution. The volume?s approach is multi-disciplinary, involving both senior and younger Carthusian scholars in investigation of the main facets of Carthusian life for which significant data survives. This permits a thorough analysis of the order?s character, one that reflects concern with synoptic understanding of medieval Carthusianism rather than partial assessment through a specifically devotional, literary, or more narrowly historical approach. Il relate en deux livres au ton assez different les miracles operes par des reliques du protomartyr a leur arrivee dans la ville. Il s'agit la d'un document exceptionnel : d'une part, il contient deja en germe toutes les caracteristiques du genre hagiographique du libellus miraculorum, promis a un immense developpement au moyen age, et d'autre part, il presente une theologie du miracle assez differente de celle d'Augustin et revele l'etat d'esprit des clercs dans une communaute chretienne d'Afrique contemporaine de l'eveque d'Hippone. Il donne aussi de precieux renseignements sur la vie et le langage des couches modestes de la population dans une petite cite africaine, et sur certains aspects de la societe aristocratique de Carthage a la veille de l'invasion vandale. Ce livre, qui comprend une edition critique du texte, fondee sur la collation de 21 manuscrits et accompagnee d'une traduction commentee, propose aussi une serie d'etudes particulieres, qui visent a replacer l'oeuvre dans son contexte historique, theologique, litteraire et linguistique. Il voudrait ainsi montrer tout l'interet que presente le De miraculis pour l'histoire des mentalites et pour l'histoire sociale de l'Afrique tardive et contribuer aussi a eclairer le role qu'ont tenu les miracula post mortem dans la theologie du miracle, dans la diffusion du culte des saints et dans la formation des genres hagiographiques. In the broad liturgical tradition of Christianity, the idea of keeping vigil appears to manifest the Church's eschatological nature. Documentary evidence from the earliest centuries reveals that some Christians kept a night watch at the graves of martyrs and other heroes of the faith as to anticipate that dawn when the rising Sun of Justice would return in fulfilment of his promise. Eventually, vigils appear not just for Easter, Pentecost and saints' days, but also for Christmas, the dedication of a church building, and on Saturday evening of the uniquely Roman quarterly Ember Weeks. Liturgical sources of the sixth, seventh, and eighth centuries reveal that such practices became relatively standardized with the assignment of specific Mass texts and scriptural readings, yet we know very little about the precise elements which comprised a vigil liturgy and of their theological significance. At the same time these vigils were so important that they attracted to themselves the celebration of major sacramental liturgies during them. Hence, the Paschal Vigil, which existed for centuries as a vigil liturgy of scriptural readings and prayers gradually became the setting for the annual baptismal celebration. ISBN 9782503574561.‎ ‎Summary The Holy Trinity forms a cornerstone of Christian belief, and references to it abound in the liturgy. Every Psalm ends with the invocation of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost in the Doxology supplied as the final verse. But around the turn of the tenth century, clerics decided to devote the first Sunday after Pentecost to the veneration of the Trinity. They created a new liturgy for the day, and evidence suggests that Stephen, Bishop of Li ge (? 920) revised an earlier form of the Office into the version that saw wide dissemination in the Latin West from the end of the tenth century. The abbey of Saint Martial in Limoges exhibited considerable enthusiasm for the feast and its Office beginning in the early eleventh century. Its scriptorium prepared no fewer than five copies of the Office, including four fully neumed versions between ca. 1010 and 1050, including the earliest extant transcribable copy with music in the hand of Ad mar de Chabannes, musician, scribe, homilist and historian. This edition presents a critical text of the Office as it was practised at Saint Martial during the first half of the eleventh century, beginning with Ad mar's version, but also considering the other witnesses from the abbey. It includes full critical and explanatory commentary with an Introduction that discusses the role of Stephen of Li ge in the authorship of the Office, the witnesses from Saint Martial and their relationship to other early witnesses of the Office, and its musical and literary style.
