‎SEDER TEFILAH KE-FI MINHAG ITALIA: FORMULARIO DELLE ORAZIONI DEGLI ISRAELITI‎

‎Later Blue Boards with Original Paper Wrappers bound inside. 8vo. 104 pages; 19 cm. In Hebrew with title page in Italian. Title translates to “Form of the Prayers According to the Italian Custom. ” “The customs and religious rites of the Italian-rite Jews can be seen as a bridge between the Ashkenazi and Sephardi traditions, showing similarities to both; they are closer still to the customs of the Romaniotes (native Greek Jews) . A sub-division is recognised between minhag Bene Romi, practiced in Rome, and minhag Italiani, practised in northern cities such as Turin, though the two rites are generally close. In matters of religious law, Italian-rite Jews generally follow the same rules as the Sephardim, in that they accept the authority of Isaac Alfasi and the Shulchan Aruch as opposed to the Ashkenazi customs codified by Moses Isserles (the Rema) . However their liturgy is different from that of both of these groups. One reason for this may be that Italy was the main centre of early Jewish printing, enabling Italian Jews to preserve their own traditions when most other communities had to opt for a standard ‘Sephardi’ or ‘Ashkenazi’ prayer-book. It is often claimed that the Italian prayer-book contains the last remnants of the Judaean/Galilaean Jewish tradition, while both the Sephardi and, to a lesser extent, the Ashkenazi rites reflect the Babylonian tradition” (Wikipedia 2017) . ‎Moses, Isaac S., preparer‎

‎[TEFILOT YISRA'EL]. UNION PRAYER BOOK. AS ADOPTED BY THE CENTRAL CONFERENCE OF AMERICAN RABBIS. [PART I: THE SABBATH, THE THREE FESTIVALS, AND THE DAILY PRAYERS].‎

‎1st edition. Period Leather binding, 12mo,  260, 140 pages. Singerman 4357. "Printed as manuscript for the Rabbinical Conference." The scarce true first edition, quickly recalled after publication by the Reform movement because of opposition led by the Einhorn wing. “Rabbi Wise's intent notwithstanding,  Minhag America was not universally accepted. Neither was the first draft of the Union Prayer Book (UPB) ,  the prayer book which the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) planned to publish based on Minhag America.  For by the time the CCAR was ready to release the Union Prayer Book in 1892, a more radically Reform wing, led by Rabbi David Einhorn of Baltimore, had the votes to change the CCAR's direction away from its centrist origins. The 1892 version of the UPB was actually recalled, at considerable expense; its replacement, published in 1895 as the ‘first edition’ of theUnion Prayer Book,  was more in keeping with the tenets of Classical Reform” (Stevens, in Reform Judaism, 2006) ]. Isaac S. Moses was the rabbi at Ahawath Chesed-Shaar Hashomayim, what is now Central Synagogue in New York. He spent much of his earlier career in several congregations throughout the Midwest. O. CLC: 173031297OCLC lists 19 copies worldwide. Spine rebacked, original boards worn but solid, otherwise Very Good Condition. Very Important. (kh-3-8-DX-'e)‎

‎MACHZOR: FORM OF PRAYERS FOR THE NEW YEAR, [AND] FORM OF PRAYERS FOR THE DAY OF ATONEMENT. ACCORDING TO THE CUSTOM OF THE POLISH JEWS. WITH ENGLISH TRANSLATION [COMPLETE SET IN TWO VOLUMES]‎

‎1st edition. Period-style gilt tooled Morocco leather. 12mo, various pagination (aprox 475 pages total) . Singerman 1285, Goldman 40. The first Ashkenazi machzor printed in America. Based upon the celebrated Wolf Heidenheim edition, Henry (Chaim) Frank of New York published in 1854 2 prayer-books for the Days of Awe: This volume for the New Year, as well as a volume for Yom Kipur. He issued this set following the Polish tradition and, simultaneously, a set following the German tradition. This enabled the newly rising community of Central European Jews to conduct services according to their own custom, as opposed to that of the Sephardic rite. Frank went on in later years to issue other volumes for other Holidays. A set (New Year and Yom Kipur) of the German tradition set with repairs sold at auction for over $17,000 with commissions in 2012. No copies from the Polish set have ever appeared at major Auction. New Year's Volume has Hebrew title page 1/7 in original in 6/7 in professional facsimile (English title page and all text pages original) in spine professionally repaired with original backstrip attractively laid down; Atonement volume in all original binding with wear, especially at foot of spine. Some foxing as expected. Together a very attractive, very good condition set of this exceedingly rare and important high point in American Jewish liturgical history. (AMR-69-13)‎
