‎Saints, Scholars, and Politicians Gender as a Tool in Medieval Studies,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2005 Hardback, VIII+261 p., 5 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503516547.‎

‎Over the past eighteen years, gender has become a major analytical tool in medieval studies. The purpose of this volume is to evaluate its use and to search for ways in which to improve and enhance its value. The authors address the question of how gender relates to other tools of medieval research. Several articles criticize the way in which an exclusive focus on gender tends to obscure the impact of other factors, for instance class, politics, economy, or the genre in which a source is written. Other articles address 'wrong' ways of using gender, for instance monolithic or anachronistic views of what constitutes differences between men and women. Languages : English.‎

‎Carmelite Liturgy and Spiritual Identity The Choir Books of Krakow,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, XVI+524 p., 18 b/w ill., 30 b/w tables, 42 b/w line art, 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503517148.‎

‎This book discusses the significance of the Carmelite liturgy as practised in the Krakow convent over a period of some four hundred years. Specifically, it examines the liturgical contents of five medieval Carmelite choir books from the Krakow convent and another choir book from this collection which is now in Wroclaw, and discusses their contents (especially their significant feasts), in terms of the Carmelite order's historical self-understanding and established liturgical tradition. Carmelite Liturgy and Spiritual Identity outlines the role of liturgy in the life of the Krakow convent and in relationship to the apostolic activity of these mendicant friars. It argues that the order's unique liturgical tradition, one which remained distinctive even after the Council of Trent, was crucial to their self-understanding. It also articulates how the liturgical practices of the Krakow Carmelites made a significant contribution to the spiritual life of the city and its people. Languages : English, Latin, French.‎

‎Law and Practice in the Age of Reform The Legatine Work of Hugh of Die (1073-1106),‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2010 Hardback, XIII+246 p., 3 b/w tables, 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503531908.‎

‎Offering a rare and first-hand account of law and practice in the late eleventh century, this book examines the legatine work of the most active, itinerant, and influential members of the eleventh-century church reform movement in France: Hugh (Hugo), bishop of Die (1073-82), archbishop of Lyons (1082-1106), and papal legate to Gregory VII (1075-85) and Urban II (1094-99). In reconstructing Hugh of Die's legatine and conciliar activity, this book offers intriguing new arguments about the many relevant and often confused issues surrounding eleventh-century legates, councils, and the law - three inextricable components of church reform and administration. Hugh's efforts in promulgating and disseminating reform in France in the 1070s, 1080s, and 1090s were shaped significantly by his council activity. The manner in which he conducted this business sheds light on every aspect of his work, revealing not only his personal interpretation and application of the law, but also his vigour in suppressing clerical marriage, the selling of church offices, lay investiture, and the gravity with which he conducted his duties as legate. New light is cast on Hugh's personality and achievements by looking at the nature and influence of his legatine and legal activity in France, qualities that can only be appreciated in light of the ferment of activity during Gregory VII's pontificate. The dialectical relationship between reform and law in eleventh-century France is a recurring theme throughout this investigation, illustrating in more demonstrable terms the flow of ecclesiastical business between the papal court in Rome and France and vice versa. ‎Latin Religious Orders in Medieval Greece, 1204-1500,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, XXIV+394 pages ., 5 b/w ill., 7 b/w line art, 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503532295.‎

‎A comprehensive history of the establishment and activity of the Latin religious orders in medieval Greece. The monastic and mendicant orders that were so central in the evolution of western religion and spirituality also played a pivotal role in the expansion of Latin Christendom after the eleventh century. In the thirteenth century, following the capture of Constantinople by the armies of the Fourth Crusade, Cistercians, Benedictines, Franciscans, and Dominicans installed themselves in the former territories of the Byzantine Empire. Here, they had to adapt and compromise in order to survive, whilst Latins, Turks, and Greeks struggled to gain supremacy in the Aegean. They were also, however, faced with the challenge of attracting the devotion of the Greek Orthodox population, advancing the cause of church union, and promoting the interests of their Frankish, Venetian, and Genoese patrons. This volume follows the orders? fortunes in medieval Greece, examines their involvement in the ecclesiastical and secular politics of the age, and looks at how the monks and friars pursued their spiritual, missionary, and Unionist goals in the frontier societies of Latin Romania. ‎This international and interdisciplinary collection of essays discusses the regular canons in the medieval British Isles from their emergence in the twelfth century to the end of the monastic period in the sixteenth century. Of all the new monastic and religious groups to settle in the British Isles in the course of the twelfth century the regular canons were the most prolific. At the heart of their existence was the vita apostolica, but even more than other such groups the regular canons became involved in active spiritual care of their communities. Perhaps as a result of this feature they also enjoyed sustained support from founders, patrons and benefactors, and new foundations continued to be made long after the main force of the expansion of the monastic orders had declined. This interdisciplinary volume brings together scholars from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England who work on aspects of the history, culture, art history and archaeology of the regular canons in the medieval British Isles. Between them, the chapters of this book consider the regular canons in their wider historical and historiographical context, assessing their role in the religious, social, cultural, economic and political world of the medieval British Isles, and introducing new and recent research on this important religious group. ‎This book rediscovers a forgotten theme in medieval art, providing a vivid and original account of medieval society. This is the first monograph on the medieval Italian representations of the corporal and spiritual Works of Mercy, the fourteen basic categories of almsdeeds conceived by the scholastics. This is a genuinely interdisciplinary study: Federico Botana has painstakingly dissected frescoes, panel paintings, miniatures, and sculptures of the Works of Mercy to shed new light on fundamental aspects of medieval society. These depictions reveal how communities took care of their needy, in some instances beyond what can be gleaned in written sources. Most of all, they contribute to our understanding of medieval confraternal piety. For Church reformers and the Mendicant Orders, the Works of Mercy served to rally Christians against heresy. For Christians, performing the Works was a means of communion with Christ, opening the door to salvation. Botana?s discoveries demonstrate the essential importance of the Works of Mercy in the late Middle Ages, and suggest that depictions of the theme would have been far more common than previously thought. ‎Crusading in Frankish Greece A Study of Byzantine-Western Relations and Attitudes, 1204-1282,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, XLII+338 p., 1 b/w tables, 7 b/w line art, 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503534237.‎

‎After becoming a major aspect of the contact between East and West during the twelfth century, the Crusades were even more widely deployed in the thirteenth century at the frontiers of Latin Christendom (in the Holy Land, the Iberian peninsula, and the Baltic), as well as within western Europe. Another such front was opened up after the conquest of Constantinople by the army of the Fourth Crusade in 1204, where the opponents were the Christian but 'schismatic' Greeks. A series of crusades were proclaimed for the defence of the Frankish states which were set up in the formerly Byzantine territories. This development defined the policy of the papacy, of the Latin powers, and of the Greek states in the area, and had a profound impact on Greco-Latin relations in the thirteenth century. At the same time, it constituted an important stage in the expansion of crusading at large, and was an integral part of the process of Latin Christendom's self-definition against the various 'others' it came in contact with: Muslims, pagans, as well as Eastern Christians. Yet, despite their importance, these expeditions have not been systematically examined before. This book addresses this omission. Drawing from both Byzantine and crusade historiography and making use of a wealth of unexploited sources, it investigates the evolution of crusading in Frankish Greece and places it in the context of Byzantine-western interaction, of political circumstances across Europe, and of developments in the theory and practice of Holy War. ‎An interdisciplinary contribution to the latest scholarship on Wyclif, Wycliffism, and lollardy. The philosophical and theological ideas of John Wyclif, their dissemination among clerical and lay audiences, and the movement of religious dissent associated with his name all provoked sharp controversies in late medieval England. This volume brings together the very latest scholarship on Wyclif and Wycliffism, with its contributors exploring in interdisciplinary fashion the historical, literary, and theological resonances of the Wycliffite controversies. Far from adhering to the traditional binary divide between 'orthodoxy' and 'heresy' as a tool for explaining the religious turmoil of the late fourteenth, fifteenth, and early sixteenth centuries, essays here explore the construction and rhetorical use of those terms, collectively producing a more nuanced account of the religious history of pre-Reformation England. Topics include the use of religious lyrics and tables of lessons as indirect rebuttals of Wycliffite claims; the social networks through which dissenters transmitted their ideas; dissenting and mainstream readings of Scripture; the 'survival' of Wycliffism in the run-up to Henry VIII's reformation; and the fate of Wyclif and Wycliffism in later historiography. Leading contributors include Anne Hudson, Alastair Minnis, and Peter Marshall. Languages : English.‎

‎Petrarch's Humanist Writing and Carthusian Monasticism The Secret Language of the Self,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2013 Hardback, approx. X+277 p., 30 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503544199.‎

‎By shedding light on the role played by Carthusian spirituality and practices in Petrarch?s life and work and following a common line of philosophical and theological development through his writings, this book argues that there still are lessons to be learned in both about the relationship between religion and literature, theology and spirituality. The fourteenth century saw an exponential rise in charterhouses across Europe. During this period of growth, the cloister walls protecting the silence and solitude of the relatively small and isolated semi-eremitical Carthusian houses became more porous, pliable, and open to the outer world. Although still considered at the forefront of Christian piety and asceticism, the Carthusians began to be more clearly identified with their newly acquired taste for the arts, literature, and architecture. Gradually, charterhouses became major humanist centres attracting sophisticated patrons, artists, and scholars. Of the long line of renowned anti-scholastic intellectuals who were attracted to Carthusian circles, Petrarch was undoubtedly the first. By revealing the Carthusian imprint on Petrarch?s thought as well as elements of Carthusian spirituality present in his texts, this book argues that Carthusianism was an essential component of Petrarch?s Christian humanism and hermeneutics of the self. An interdisciplinary approach, involving parallel readings of Petrarchan texts, early monastic and Carthusian primary sources, together with more recent theological reflections, offers new insights into the role of Carthusianism in the intellectual debate on spirituality and the position of the individual within this order. Through Petrarch and his literary works, the Carthusian milieu ultimately shaped not only Renaissance humanism but also our understanding of the relationship between ?self?, God, and others. ‎Artes praedicandi. Artes orandi‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 1992 Hardcover. 120 p., 160 x 240 mm, Languages: French, Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503360614.‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 1994 Hardcover. 138 p., 160 x 240 mm, Languages: French, Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503360706.‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2000 Hardcover. 998 p., 160 x 240 mm, Languages: English, Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503510156.‎

‎The central literary genre in the life of medieval Christians and Jews, the sermon is an exceedingly rich but until recently under-utiliezd source for scholars of medieval culture. Extant in thousands of unedited manuscripts, sermons provide cruscial insights into the mentalities of medieval people: yet they also pose difficult methodological challenges. The Sermon, volume 81-83 in the series Typologie des sources du moyen age occidental, offers both a practical guide to methodology and extensive coverage of both Latin and vernacular texts. This significant work provides a bridge from sermonists to other scholars, inviting them into the study of this exciting and challenging genre. The Sermon provides guidelines for historical criticism that apply to the sermon genre. An extensive bibliography of works pertinent to the genre, opens the volume; it is divided into sections corresponding to the subsequent chapters. The book's Introduction focuses on the definition of the genre, attempting to establish a working typology of the sermon both as a literary genre and as a medieval text. The Jewish Sermon precedes the chapter on Christian sermons: for the latter the genre's development from Latin to the vernacular serves as the organizational guide. The Latin Sermon is represented in: Early Medieval Homilies and Homiliaries, The Twelfth-Century Monastic Sermon, the Sermons of the Twelfth-Century Schoolmasters and Canons, and the Latin Sermons after 1200. The chapter of medieval preaching in Italy encompasses both Latin and vernacular sermons, and the several chapters devoted to vernacular texts include: Old English; Middle English; Old Norse; French; Spanish; Portuguese and Catalan; and German.Several topics are discussed in each chapter: the definition of the genre, its development, its diffusion, its value for historians, the principal editions and/or manuscripts.‎

‎Medieval Sermons and Society: Cloister, City, University‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 1998 Hardcover. 422 pages., 7 ill., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: English, French, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 02150090200.‎

‎The twenty-one essays in this volume focus on medieval sermons and their relationship to the society they reflect and to the diverse audiences they address, broadly divided into three groups: cloister, city and university. The chronological range of the essays extends from the early to the late Middle Ages, touching on the major periods in the history of preaching: monastic texts for use within religious communities; the preaching of pilgrim-missionary monks; sermons from the twelfth-century world reflecting heightened Marian devotion and also viewing the urbanisation of society with alarm; the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215 with its influential legislation on preaching; the vast preaching activities of the mendicant orders, including sermons written for communities of religious women, a crucial part of the cura monialium; the growth of the cathedral schools and the mendicant studia into universities where preachers were educated and aids for preaching and sermon collections were generated in great quuantities; the production of vernacular materials for lay audiences; and the persuasive power of preaching in urban centres such as London, or Florence, where Italian humanism exerted an early influence on the rhetoric of sermons. In all these eras and venues, medieval preachers both reflected and shaped the society around them. The essays in this volume illustrate amply the wealth of material that sermons offer for the social, intellectual, religious and political history of the Middle Ages. The volume contains three sections: The Cloister, with an introduction by D.L. Stoudt and articles by Z. Izydorczyk, L. Martin, J. Blaettler, A. Thayer, R.D; Hale, D.L. Stoudt and A. Syring; The City, with an introduction by A. Thayer and articles by P.B. Roberts, B.M. Kienzle, C.A. Muessig, C. Ho, L. Carruthers, J. Dah,us, P. Horner and P. ‎Anaphoral Tradition in the 'Barcelona Papyrus'‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 384 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:3 col., 86 tables b/w., 1 maps color, Language(s):English, Greek, Coptic. ISBN 9782503605548.‎

‎Summary Since the discovery in the 1950's of the so-called 'Barcelona Papyrus', the anaphora contained within it has remained the most understudied classical anaphora. However, a close analysis of this anaphora can reshape liturgical historians' understanding of a number of classical anaphoras, and thus their approach to anaphoral development more broadly. This anaphora requires scholars to rethink questions concerning the construction, geographical provenance, and structural patterns of early anaphoras and their units. It is a witness to a very early form of Eucharistic praying, and points to various ways in which older less developed Eucharistic prayers developed into the anaphoral patterns common in the fourth century. As such, an analysis of this anaphora is of historical and methodological interest. This anaphora is also an early witness to Egyptian Eucharistic praying. It stems from the same anaphoral tradition as the anaphora of St. Mark, but on the whole it is an earlier witness to that tradition. The anaphora in the Barcelona Papyrus also bears a number of structural and textual similarities to the anaphora described in the Mystagogical Catecheses, which is often attributed to Cyril of Jerusalem. As such, it sheds further light on the relationship between Egypt and Jerusalem. ‎'Universal Prayer' in the Ancient Latin Liturgies. Patristic Evidence and Liturgical Texts‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 393 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:5 tables b/w., Language(s):English, Latin, Greek. ISBN 9782503606811.‎

‎Summary The reinstatement of the Universal Prayer into the Roman liturgy following the Second Vatican Council prompted Paul De Clerck to research its origins and development, taking as his primary model the ancient Roman Orationes sollemnes of Good Friday. The result has been a marvellous gift to liturgical scholars, as his meticulous study of texts from both East and West brings to light direct and indirect relationships and provides significant insight into the way in which Western liturgical families developed their intercessory formularies. The first part of his study is devoted to analysis of allusions to the Oratio fidelium found in the writings of the Fathers and ecclesiastical writers of the first five centuries, with the aim of discovering the prehistory of the 'prayer of the faithful' particularly with regard to its content, form and placement within the liturgy. The second part of the study analyses and compares the oldest preserved texts that shed light on the prayer. Chief among these are the Deprecatio Gelasii in its various iterations, the Orationes sollemnes of Rome (and parallels in other Churches) and the Gallic and Hispanic Orationes paschales, together with relevant texts from Celtic and Gallican sources. The translation of the French text will provide English-speaking scholars across the globe access to this excellent work and encourage similar in-depth research into liturgical sources that will continue to enhance the celebration of the Church's liturgy and the full and conscious participation of the entire faithful. ‎Vigilemus et Oremus'. The Theological Significance of 'Keeping Vigil' in Rome from the Fourth to the Eighth Centuries‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 411 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:94 tables b/w., Language(s):English, Latin. ISBN 9782503590882.‎

‎Summary Christians have observed vigils in both East and West from earliest times. In the broad liturgical tradition of Christianity, the idea of keeping vigil appears to manifest the Church's eschatological nature. Documentary evidence from the earliest centuries reveals that some Christians kept a night watch at the graves of martyrs and other heroes of the faith as to anticipate that dawn when the rising Sun of Justice would return in fulfilment of his promise. Eventually, vigils appear not just for Easter, Pentecost and saints' days, but also for Christmas, the dedication of a church building, and on Saturday evening of the uniquely Roman quarterly Ember Weeks. Liturgical sources of the sixth, seventh, and eighth centuries reveal that such practices became relatively standardized with the assignment of specific Mass texts and scriptural readings, yet we know very little about the precise elements which comprised a vigil liturgy and of their theological significance. At the same time these vigils were so important that they attracted to themselves the celebration of major sacramental liturgies during them. Hence, the Paschal Vigil, which existed for centuries as a vigil liturgy of scriptural readings and prayers gradually became the setting for the annual baptismal celebration. This book examines the nature of Roman vigil liturgies in the early centuries of Christianity to unravel the most primitive structure of keeping vigil and to provide a better understanding of the Paschal Vigil, which Augustine of Hippo affirms as the 'mother of all vigils.'‎

‎Office of the Holy Trinity at Saint Martial de Limoges during the Eleventh Century‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, lxxiv + 131 pages, Size:210 x 297 mm, Illustrations:16 tables b/w., 68 musical examples, Languages: English, Latin. ISBN 9782503574561.‎

‎Summary The Holy Trinity forms a cornerstone of Christian belief, and references to it abound in the liturgy. Every Psalm ends with the invocation of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost in the Doxology supplied as the final verse. But around the turn of the tenth century, clerics decided to devote the first Sunday after Pentecost to the veneration of the Trinity. They created a new liturgy for the day, and evidence suggests that Stephen, Bishop of Li ge (? 920) revised an earlier form of the Office into the version that saw wide dissemination in the Latin West from the end of the tenth century. The abbey of Saint Martial in Limoges exhibited considerable enthusiasm for the feast and its Office beginning in the early eleventh century. Its scriptorium prepared no fewer than five copies of the Office, including four fully neumed versions between ca. 1010 and 1050, including the earliest extant transcribable copy with music in the hand of Ad mar de Chabannes, musician, scribe, homilist and historian. This edition presents a critical text of the Office as it was practised at Saint Martial during the first half of the eleventh century, beginning with Ad mar's version, but also considering the other witnesses from the abbey. It includes full critical and explanatory commentary with an Introduction that discusses the role of Stephen of Li ge in the authorship of the Office, the witnesses from Saint Martial and their relationship to other early witnesses of the Office, and its musical and literary style. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction with discussion of the contribution of Bishop Stephen of Li ge to the authorship of the Office, the witnesses, liturgical considerations, editorial principles and the musical styles of the melodies as transmitted at Saint Martial. This fourth-century document is the largest among the so-called ancient church orders. Pylv n inen divides the tasks of female deacons into three categories: liturgical, charitable and communicative. ‎Litany in Arts and Cultures‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, xiv + 317 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:32 b/w, 14 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503586700.‎

‎Summary The articles in this book encompass a broad historical panorama and consider the presence of litanic prayers and songs in different religions, beginning with written records in the Egyptian, Sumerian and Hebrew languages and finishing with Christian works from diverse denominations. The research presents the litany as an exceptionally long-lasting genre which for several thousand years existed in the Middle-Eastern and European traditions, easily conforming to changes in religious or historical circumstances. An interdisciplinary approach by scholars representing different fields of study, including the history of liturgy, Egyptology, Assyriology, literary studies, musicology and ethnosemiotics, allows the eclectic character of litanies to be revealed, litanies which not only were a form of church prayer but also had an impact on the organization of social rituals as well as being appropriated by all the major fields of art, oetry, the fine arts and music. The musicological articles in the book address the performance of Sumerian prayers, the liturgical songs of the Middle Ages, litanies in Tudor England and polyphonic works of the great composers, such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. ‎Tractatus liturgici‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, lxxxiv + 209 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Language: Latin. ISBN 9782503586014.‎

‎Summary This volume offers the first modern edition and study of the liturgical writings of Bern, abbot of Reichenau (d. 1048). Dealing with some of the more ordinary questions facing medieval worshipping communities - such as how to find the correct date for Advent Sunday, or how to be sure that a text is liturgically or doctrinally appropriate - Bern's four tractates provide rare first-hand insights into the practices, problems and perceptions of Christian liturgy in the early years of the second millennium. Formerly attributed to Bern, a fifth work (Ratio generalis de initio Aduentus) is shown to be one of his sources and is edited in an appendix. Unlike formal liturgical expositions, Bern's writings were devoted to alleviating specific concerns, often at the request of specific people. However, the author also believed strongly in the potential of his reasoning to draw together the Christian community at large. As such, these writings are assiduously argued and researched, reaching their conclusions with the author's characteristically broad weave of citation, interpretation and anecdote. With implications liturgical, intellectual and political, the tractates are fertile sources not only for scholars of religion, but also for musicologists and medieval historians. In an extensive introduction the editor addresses longstanding questions about the shape, extent and internal coherence of Bern's liturgical oeuvre, aided by two recently rediscovered manuscripts. The apparatus and indices also provide the first detailed survey of the author's extensive liturgical, patristic and canonical citations, in addition to accessible explications of more complicated areas of argument. ‎Music and Liturgy for the Benedicamus Domino c.800-1650‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 398 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:5 b/w, 18 col., 23 tables b/w., 65 music examples, Language: English. ISBN 9782503614861.‎

‎Summary For more than a millenium, singers in churches, monasteries, and private chapels across Europe have closed their worship with the joyful musical exclamation Benedicamus Domino ('Let us Bless the Lord'). This moment has sounded in song many times a day: at the end of the Mass, the Office hours, outside the church walls in celebratory processions, as well as in informal sacred, devotional, and festive contexts. Benedicamus Domino was uniquely associated with an unprecedented amount of creative freedom in the sacred rituals of the Christian West: plainchant melodies could be adopted at will from other parts of the liturgy, and this moment inspired a proliferation of poetic and polyphonic elaborations from the eleventh century on. This collection of essays brings together interdisciplinary contributions from eighteen scholars, illuminating the wide range of ritual, musical, poetic, manuscript, and generic contexts for the Benedicamus Domino versicle in the period c.800 -1650. Individual chapters engage with the evidence of liturgical commentaries and Patristic texts, Ordines, and hagiographies. They present and analyse musical and textual embellishments of the Benedicamus Domino, as well as their written traces and material contexts, with several sources discovered or discussed in detail here for the first time. Encompassing a wide geographical and generic scope, this volume reveals unsuspected continuities and contrasts in the history of the Benedicamus Domino versicle in medieval and early modern Europe. ‎Cosmic Liturgy: Qumran's 364-Day Calendar‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, xx + 330 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:3 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503584270.‎

‎Summary This work shows how the importance of Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday in the 364-day Qumran calendar is based on the Priestly creation narrative in Genesis and the myth of a cosmic covenant established between God and the angels on the first day. The myth of the apostasy of the angels guiding the seven planets was used to explain the discrepancy between the 364-day calendar and observation. The Epistle of Jude makes it possible to situate this work in relation to both Jubilees and the Book of the Watchers and confirms the use of the 364-day calendar in the earliest years of the nascent Church.‎

‎Readers and Hearers of the Word. The Cantillation of Scripture in the Middle Ages‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 268 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:12 b/w, 17 col., 14 musical examples, Language: English. ISBN 9782503592879.‎

‎Summary Readers and Hearers is a broad, multi-disciplinary treatment of the chanting of the Scriptures (epistle and gospel) at Mass in the Middle Ages. This form of chanting followed a procedure that continued to be used in the western Latin liturgy until the mid-twentieth century and in the traditional Latin Mass today. The readings were not simply spoken, but chanted to formulae that stood halfway between heightened speech and song (cantillation). Specific clerics (lectors, subdeacons, deacons), distinctively vested, were commissioned to chant the Scriptures, employing a ritual that came to be surrounded by an elaborate ceremonial. For the gospel this involved acolytes, processional movement, and the employment of ecclesiastical 'furniture' (pulpit, ambo, and choir screen). While the laity attending Mass could generally see all of the ritual actions, what did they understand of the Latin text they were hearing? In areas where Latin was spoken in Antiquity the ability to comprehend Latin passively as it morphed into the Romance vernaculars survived longer than generally assumed. Naturally, in Germanic lands, christianized in the early Middle Ages, that capability never existed. Several manuals were created to guide layfolk to engage in devotions suitable to the various parts of the Mass. How all of these elements ? ceremony and devotional aids ? united 'readers' with 'hearers' at Mass is the theme of the present volume, which also covers Martin Luther's guidelines for the chanting of the Scriptures in German TABLE OF CONTENTS List of Illustrations, Abbreviations Introduction Chapter 1. ‎Participation in Heavenly Worship From Apocalyptic Mysticism to the Eucharistic Sanctus‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Paperback, 238 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, Greek, Latin. ISBN 9782503599281.‎

‎Summary The idea of participation in heavenly worship is a fascinating perspective on the Christian Eucharistic liturgy. Although somewhat forgotten in modern times, the early church knew it as a central aspect of meaning in interpretations of the Eucharistic rite. Through this rite worshippers could see themselves in communion with angels and saints in the eternal liturgy of heaven. Interpretations along such lines emerge clearly in catechesis and homilies from the fourth century onwards, and continue to develop in the following centuries, especially in the eastern liturgical traditions. The question remains, however, what are the origins of this concept? In Participation in Heavenly Worship, Sverre Lied explores how the relations between the earthly and heavenly realms were understood within the context of Christian worship during the first three centuries CE. He argues that the idea of participation is an aspect of Christian worship that may be traced back to Jewish Christian apocalyptic mysticism, and shows how this concept, with considerable variations, was preserved and developed during the following centuries. These observations also shed new light on the appearance of the Sanctus in the Eucharistic liturgy.‎
