‎Édition originale sortie des presses anversoires de Jan Cnobbaert. Vierge à l'enfant gravée sur le titre encadrée de l'inscription manuscrite à l'encre du temps Salve advocata Maria dulcis Maria sis nobis propitia.Description et recensement en trois livres des sanctuaires miraculeux dédiés à la Vierge dans le Brabant - qui comprenait alors la province d'Anvers - dénommé le "Jardin de Marie", par le chanoine norbertin de Tongerloo Augustin Wichmans qui montre avec ce travail une Vierge de victoire bienveillante à l'égard du peuple brabançon. Le livre II comprend 67 chapitres qui détaillent pour chaque sanctuaire l'histoire de chaque image ainsi que les miracles qu'elle a suscités. Le livre III énumère les monastères dédiés à la Vierge. « Les Pays-Bas méridionaux n'ont connu, tout au long du XVIIe siècle, que guerres et affrontements. En lutte contre les Provinces-Unies calvinistes, dévastés par les puissances européennes qui ont fait du pays leur champ de bataille, ils espèrent sans cesse une trêve définitive qui tarde à se concrétiser. Dans ce contexte politique troublé où les nombreux traités de paix ne conduisent qu'à de nouveaux conflits, les habitants recherchent une protection efficace pour leur patrie. Cette protection, certains veulent la trouver dans la figure de la Vierge Marie. C'est ainsi que quelques livrets de pèlerinage marial, véritables outils de propagande au service des autorités tant spirituelles que temporelles, réclament la paix en s'attachant à donner à la Mère de Dieu une dimension symbolique nouvelle. A côté de la traditionnelle Vierge miraculeuse qui guérit les maux, grands et petits, des simples particuliers, apparaît alors une Vierge patriote soignant les blessures de la nation. Au XVIIe siècle, les statues mariales miraculeuses sont légion dans les Pays-Bas méridionaux. D'origine médiévale ou d'invention récente, elles attirent les foules dans les sanctuaires où elles sont vénérées. Cette immense popularité est attisée par les autorités catholiques dans le cadre de la Contre-Réforme. En réaction aux attaques protestantes, elles ont fait de la Vierge la figure de proue de leur entreprise de reconquête. Elles encouragent donc la dévotion à une Marie puissante et victorieuse, intensifient le réseau de lieux sacrés qui lui sont voués, favorisent les pèlerinages aux statues miraculeuses mais exercent en même temps un contrôle sévère pour éviter tout excès qui nuirait à l'Église. With an introduction by Cardinal Bourne the Archbishop of Westminster and a foreword on the call to contemplation by the Lord Bishop of Plymouth. Written just after the end of the first world war Cardinal Bourne has this to say: "There are at the present day so many souls not only those consecrated to God in the priesthood and in the cloister but among men and women of every rank and position in the world who need only a little encouragement in order to unite themselves more completely to our Lord. By such union not only would their own sanctificati on be rapidly promoted but their influence for good upon their own immediate world would be enormously increased". Previous owner's name on the front free end paper and an old bookseller's label on the back paste down end paper. The externals show only mild wear with the exception of the lower spine which is worn and has a 4 cm spilt in the front joint. The spine itself is faded. The interior pages are browned or age toned with a few having small dog eared creases otherwise very clean. The binding is a tad shaken though still solid and sound.
