Some light wrinkling crease down the middle of image. Generally very good. The American Colony in Jerusalem was founded by Chicago Presbyterians Horatio and Anne Stafford in 1881. With an initial following of sixteen they set out to establish a Christian Utopia inside the Holy City's ancient walls. Horatio died of malaria in 1888 yet the movement continued to grow mainly preoccupying itself with feeding and educating the city's poor and disadvantaged. Charity of this kind required a regular stream of income which flowed in part from the sale of photographs taken initially by Elijah Meyers a Jewish convert living in Jerusalem. The Colony's Photographic Branch continued to document the sights and scenes of Jerusalem until internal disagreement lead to its dissolution in the 1950s. Jerusalem 1930. Original black & white photographic print 23 x 29 cm blind-stamp of the American Colony Jerusalem to lower right corner. Very good conditon. The American religious foundation and philanthropy that informally became known as the American Colony of Jerusalem was established in the Ottoman Empire in 1881 as a "Christian utopian society" led by American religious leader Horatio Gates Spafford and his Norwegian wife Anne Tobine Larsen Øglende. Largely concerned with providing social services education meeting spaces and medical care it became known for producing and publishing an important documentation photographic series of the area of Jerusalem starting in the early 1900s. The community lasted until the 1950s. Around 1900 Elijah Meyers a member of the American Colony began taking photographs of places and events in and around the city of Jerusalem. Meyers's work eventually expanded into a full-fledged photographic division within the colony including Hol Lars Lewis Larsson and G. Eric Matson who later renamed the effort as The Matson Photo Service. Their interest in archaeological artifacts such as the Lion Tower in Tripoli pictured here and the detail of their photographs led to widespread interest in their work by archaeologists. Israel 1900. Otherwise very good condition. An albumen photograph taken by photographers of the American Colony. The American Colony was founded by the Spafford family in Jerusalem in 1881 with a second wave arriving in 1896 which believed that its work would expedite the Second Coming of Christ. The utopian Christian sect devoted themselves to the people of Jerusalem caring for the sick and setting up soup kitchens and schools with the aim of ensuring their salvation through charitable work. <br /> <br /> Anna & Horatio Spafford had suffered business losses in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. By 1873 the family had recovered and were to celebrate Christmas in Paris. Horatio was detained and Anna sailed with their four daughters from New York. Their ship sank in a collision with another mid-Atlantic with the loss of all four girls only Anna surviving. Horatio rushed to meet his wife in Wales. On his transatlantic crossing he wrote the verses that were to become the hymn "It is Well With My Soul". By 1881 their faith led the Spaffords to establish the American Colony in Jerusalem. Elijah Meyers a member of the colony began taking photographs in Jerusalem of places and important events including the visit of Wilhelm II. This endeavor turned out to be quite profitable and photography was incorporated into the society's fundraising efforts. Meyer first headed the photographic division: he was followed by Lewis Larsson who traveled extensively in the Middle East from 1903 - 1910.<br /> <br /> This image is one of Larsson's from his travels. 8 1/2 x 10 3/4" with a number and a title in English German and French. Some light wrinkling a few small tears to the edges. Generally very good. The American Colony in Jerusalem was founded by Chicago Presbyterians Horatio and Anne Stafford in 1881. With an initial following of sixteen they set out to establish a Christian Utopia inside the Holy City's ancient walls. Horatio died of malaria in 1888 yet the movement continued to grow mainly preoccupying itself with feeding and educating the city's poor and disadvantaged. Charity of this kind required a regular stream of income which flowed in part from the sale of photographs taken initially by Elijah Meyers a Jewish convert living in Jerusalem. The Colony's Photographic Branch continued to document the sights and scenes of Jerusalem until internal disagreement lead to its dissolution in the 1950s.
