Sinagoghe in Italia. Guida ai luoghi del culto e della tradizione ebraica
ill., br. L'ebraismo italiano rappresenta un unicum e vanta una presenza bimillenaria e ininterrotta. Di questa secolare storia sono rimaste tracce significative nelle città e nei piccoli centri, nei quali gli ebrei hanno avuto un particolare radicamento. E la sinagoga rimane l'elemento più rappresentativo di questa presenza. In Italia 50 sono gli edifici sinagogali: concentrati prevalentemente nel centro-nord della penisola, offrono interni riccamente decorati secondo gli stili architettonici del tempo, dal barocco, al rococò, al neoclassico. Nell'area degli antichi ghetti rimangono alcune delle più belle sinagoghe italiane, in particolare nel Veneto (Venezia, Padova), in Piemonte (Casale, Carmagnola, Cherasco), in Emilia-Romagna (Ferrara), in Toscana (Siena, Pitigliano) e nelle Marche (Ancona, Pesaro, Senigallia). Nel clima di libertà seguente all'emancipazione degli ebrei dal 1848, fu possibile la costruzione di grandi edifici monumentali. Talora antiche sinagoghe si dotarono di rinnovate facciate e ingressi (Asti, Pisa), in altri casi si costruirono grandiosi nuovi templi nell'area dell'ex ghetto (Modena, Vercelli, Roma, Firenze) o nei nuovi quartieri di residenza. La guida nasce anche dall'esigenza di portare al grande pubblico il significato e la consapevolezza di un'eredità culturale, che per il suo alto valore si inserisce a pieno diritto all'interno del patrimonio storico-artistico italiano.
