I Chronicles xi-xix. Four manuscript leaves from a 13th century Paris Bible
Paris c1250 1250. Four vellum leaves 265x165mm with the text of I Chronicles xi-xix handwritten in black ink with red and blue capitals and red chapter numbers. The leaves are mounted and placed between two sheets of glass taped at the edges but unframed so that both sides can be read. Two of them are torn at the top corner and they are somewhat soiled to the fore-edges but otherwise they are in very good condition. The date of the leaves is post-1240 which was when the chapter numbers began to be placed in the text rather than the margins. However although the chapter numbers are in red in the text they are repeated in a small hand in black in the margin which suggests that this Bible was made on the cusp of this change. There are five lines to an inch and although this is not quite a miniature "pocket" Bible it is still written in a small hand with extensive use of abbreviations and compression. The leaves are framed out of order but could easily be reordered but the text starts with the last few lines of chapter X of 1 Chronicles and then runs through to the beginning of chapter XIX. These chapters concern the early years of the reign of David and recount his conquering of Jerusalem the bringing back of the Ark of the Covenant the defeat of the Philistines and in chapter XVII David's Prayer. Paris c1250 hardcover

The Bible : that is the Holy Scriptvres conteined in the Old and New Testament

1611 King James Geneva Hybrid Bible 1st ed John SPEED New Testament Genealogy

This Geneva KJV Hybrid Bible from 1611 to 1618 was printed in London by Robert Barker and associates during a transitional period in English Bible production. In the 16th and 17th centuries English Bibles printed by Barker were extremely popular and have maintained their value and desirability into the 21st century. However none are as historically sought-after as the famous 1611 King James Bible. This edition integrates the complete King James Old Testament and Apocrypha with a Geneva-style annotated New Testament. The New Testament title page is present and dated 1611. According to Darlow & Moule New Testament title pages dated "1611" appeared only in 1611 and 1612 issues; they also state that for editions appearing in 1613 a large portion of the content was probably printed in 1611. Ruth 3:15 reads "she went into the citie" identifying this copy with the second state of the 1611 King James Bible. Geneva woodcut illustrations reused from the 1580s to 1590s are found throughout the Book of Exodus.

The appended metrical Psalter is dated 1618 and printed by Felix Kingston for the Stationers' Company. It reflects a common practice in Barker's printshop of incorporating the standard Sternhold and Hopkins Psalms into folio Bibles of the period. The New Testament's formatting follows earlier Geneva conventions with double columns of Gothic script marginal cross-references and dense annotations attributed to Laurence Tomson Theodore Beza Pierre Villerius and Franciscus Junius. These marginalia provide variant readings from Greek and Latin sources and theological commentary especially in Revelation. Geneva-style artwork such as images of Tabernacle furnishings and priestly attire in Exodus appears throughout this edition and reflects its hybrid construction.

A rare and bibliographically significant early 17th-century folio Bible printed by Robert Barker ca. 1618 typifying the transitional hybrid editions issued in the wake of the 1611 King James Bible. This example presents a composite construction combining the newly authorized King James Version text for the Old Testament and Apocrypha with the enduring scholarly apparatus of the Geneva Bible's New Testament. The Old Testament includes the corrected reading "she" at Ruth 3:15 identifying the text with the second issue of the 1611 KJV. The formatting follows the 1611 layout with double-column black letter type chapter summaries and marginal references consistent with the design of the authorized version. By contrast the Geneva New Testament includes extensive annotations and preserved title language such as "Translated out of the Greeke by Theod. Beza Englished by L. Tomson with the annotations of Fr. Junius upon the Revelation of Saint John." Geneva-style woodcuts reused by Barker are rarely found in KJV volumes and their inclusion reflects the mixed-format nature of this edition. HOLY BIBLE
The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament and the New: Newly translated out of the original tongues and with the former Translations diligently compar'd and revis'd By his Majesty's Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches
London: Printed by John Baskett printer to the King's most Excellent Majesty & by the Assigns of Thomas Newcomb and Henry Hills deceas'd 1715 1715. Bound with The Book of Common Prayer London: Charles Bill and the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb deceased 1709. And with The Whole Book of Psalms: Collected into English Metre by Thomas Sternhold John Hopkins And Others. London: Printed by J. Heptinstall 1717. 8vo. 192x120mm. Unpaginated. Collates as follows: BCP a4 A8-G6. Bible pi1 A8-Z8 As8-Zz8 Aaa8-Zzz8 Aaaa8-Cccc4. Psalms: A4-L4. General title for the Bible dated 1715 with the separate title page for the New Testament dated 1710. Contemporary black morocco decorated with gilt panel with gilt cornerpieces. Spine lavishly decorated in gilt. Extremities and head and foot of spine rubbed and worn and a split to the joint of upper cover at head and foot of spine. Some marking and fading to covers. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Internally very good but with some waterstaining from Bbbb and Cccc of the New Testament. The front pastedown has the very pretty book label "Martha Manning. Her Book. 1770." It is unclear exactly who this Martha Manning might be but there are two possible candidates. It might be the Martha Manning born in 1750 in Romford Essex who married William Whitford in 1771. A more exotic possibility is the Martha Manning who was the daughter of a William Manning a business associate of Henry Laurens one of the Founding Fathers and slave trader and rice planter. The Mannings had lived in St Kitts where they owned land but by the 1770s they had returned to London. In 1776 Henry Laurens's son John was in London studying law. Secretly he married Martha Manning on October 26. The following year Laurens left London and the pregnant Martha to return to America to fight in the Revolution. There he made his name working alongside Alexander Hamilton as an aide to George Washington. In 1780 Laurens was appointed to be the American special minister to France. Martha travelled to France to find her errant husband but tragically died there without seeing him. In any case this is a charming and beautiful bookplate and rare for it to belong to a woman at a time when few women owned books. This edition appears to be unrecorded in Herbert. The closest is Herbert 933 which has the OT dated 1715 and the NT dated 1712 but our copy has a 1710 NT printed by the Assigns of Thomas Newcomb and Henry Hills whose first Bible was in 1710 but was a 12mo with the text ending on S2a whereas this Bible collates continuously throughout the OT and NT. Baskett's name which is on the Old Testament title page does not appear on the New Testament until the 1712 edition and so is absent here. A nice copy of an unrecorded variant. London: Printed by John Baskett, printer to the King's most Excellent Majesty, & by the Assigns of Thomas Newcomb and He unknown

An exceptional well-margined copy of John Ogilby's imaginative reissue of the Field large folio bible published for the Restoration of King Charles II on 29th May 1660. Magnificently illustrated with 110 double-page engraved plates of biblical scenes after paintings by Rubens Tintoretto de Vos de Bruyn and other old masters including Wenceslaus Hollar's impressive double-folding-page view of Jerusalem his Chorographica Terra Sanctae of the Holy Lands and the engraved general title by Lombart after Diepenbeeck depicting Solomon enthroned. The work was originally illustrated with just 8 plates by Lombart and Hollar which had been intended for the London Polyglot bible published in 1657 but Ogilby soon offered the option of embellishing the work with a choice of engravings from the Amsterdam publisher Nicolaes Visscher. The number of plates is known to vary but ESTC calls for a total of 102 only. The text was first published the previous year by John Field printer to the University of Cambridge who had been commissioned to supply a lectern bible for use in churches and libraries. The work was well-received with the former university Vice-Chancellor John Worthington noting that 'For a fair large letter large paper with fair margin &c. there was never such a Bible in being'. In the event however most of the edition was bought-up by Ogilby for his own project. Variously called 'Ogilby's Bible' or 'The Restoration Bible' the result was a truly luxurious production with well-margined copies such as this costing upwards of £25 in sheets alone. The finished work was presented to Charles II to whom the work is dedicated when the restored monarch first visited the Royal Chapel in Whitehall. An 'unrivalled specimen of the press of the time' the finest edition of the Holy Bible then extant Lowndes. Provenance: Sir William Halsey Gaddesden Library bookplate and ownership inscription.
