The Revised Version was the product of over a decade of British and American collaborative work co-financed by Oxford and Cambridge in exchange for exclusive co-copyright on the text. Received with great acclaim and criticism it shot Oxford's number of Bibles printed per-annum over 2 million for the first time. The RV committee was a spectacular assembly of scholarly prowess who made enthusiastic use of the most recent scholarship including the new critical Greek text of Westcott and Hort. Conspicuously absent from the committee were the more literary voices of King James's translators and the somewhat wooden style of the RV suffers for it though exegetes have prized it for exactly the same reason. ‎Medievalists these days are becoming familiar with the Anglo-Saxon bishop named Aldhelm ("Old Helmet"), who lived between ca. 640 and 709. His Latin prose writings became standard works in the repertory of "Hermeneutic Latin," an abstruse literary style replete with recherche diction and tortuous syntax. So admired were Aldhelm's Latin compositions that nowadays he competes with the venerable Bede as the intellectual impresario of the early Anglo-Saxon church. Reputedly born into an aristocratic family, Aldhelm founded a monastery at Malmesbury and assumed a charge to convert the last pockets of vestigial Germanic heathenism in southwest England. Aldhelm intimately knew the most eminent churchmen of his day and was, indeed, a protege of the famous Hadrian, a Canterbury abbot and teacher at archbishop Theodore's celebrated Canterbury school. Aldhelm found time to compose one of the most notable medieval Latin works, the Prosa de virginitate, edited here in the Corpus Christianorum Series Latina. This work asserts three grades of sexual purity and supplies examples of celibate martyrs whose lives endorse Aldhelm's principles. Because Aldhelm wrote consistently about saints resisting the force of Roman paganism, it's tempting to imagine the Prosa de virginitate as a charter for Christian converts resisting Germanic paganism. Indeed, it must have been difficult to turn one's back on the old religion, especially when families still had solidly pagan parents and grandparents. The Prosa de virginitate was universally admired and Aldhelm's idiosyncratic style widely imitated. His Latin prose was so challenging, however, that an interpretative tradition soon arose around the text. Readers left annotations in their books. ‎Thanks to the fame and popularity he attained as a professor of rhetoric in fourth century Rome, C. Marius Victorinus (about 300 - post 362 AD) was awarded a statue in the Forum of Trajan (Jerome, Chron. a. 2370 = 353 AD). His treatises on logic and his translations of Aristotle and Porphyry are lost, but three of the numerous works he wrote before his accession to the Christian community still survive. A handbook on grammar (Ars Grammatica), a treatise on definitions (De definitionibus) are integrally preserved, along with a commentary on Cicero's De Inventione, the role of which as a school handbook was relevant in fourth-century education. This commentary, known under the title Explanationes in Ciceronis Rhetoricam, offers an interesting insight in Victorinus' rhetorical teaching and in his exegetical method, based on the analysis he will later apply to St. Paul's writings. This is closely linked to the Aristotelian logic and deeply rooted in Victorinus' philosophical education, as especially witnessed by the first book of the commentary. Here, the explanation of rhetorical topics through visual and memory cues as the schemes and enumerations often meets the discussion of philosophical notions and problems, though these could seem not immediately useful to the forensic debate. The present volume contains a new edition of Victorinus commentary on Cicero's De Inventione, which appears more than a hundred years after the text published in the volume of the Rhetores Latini Minores (K. Halm, Leipzig 1863). The editor has thoroughly examined the whole manuscript tradition of the commentary, which has come down to us through about forty medieval and humanistic manuscripts. The apparatus is based on six sources, stemming from the VIIth to XVIth century. These offer a good witness of the different branches of the transmission and bear interesting variants. The text itself has also been considered in reference to the Latin language in use in the fourth century AD: therefore, many passages have been modified that Karl Halm had previously corrected according to the usage of classical Latin. Moreover, some short interpolations have been recognized. The comparative study of the Ciceronian entries and the direct tradition of the De Inventione has also shown that the odd text of some entries, corrected by Halm, should actually be preserved, since it stems from the copy used by Marius Victorinus and cannot be labeled as a transmission mistake. The notes following the Latin text discuss the editor's textual choices. The introductory section covers both the history of the reception of the Explanationes and a detailed analysis of the medieval manuscript tradition. Le present volume contient une nouvelle edition des Explanationes in Ciceronis Rhetoricam, qui parait plus qu'un siecle apres la publication du texte dans le corpus des Rhetores Latini Minores (K. Halm, Leipzig, 1863). L'edition est d'abord basee sur une analyse approfondie de la tradition, qui comprend environ 40 manuscrits du VIIIe au XVIe siecle; on a utilise pour l'apparat critique six temoins, qui offrent une bonne documentation des differentes branches de la tradition et presentent d'utiles variantes pour la constitution du texte. Le commentaire a ete revise en tenant compte des usages linguistiques du IVe siecle apres JC, ce qui a permis de modifier de nombreux passages que Halm avait corrige, ne considerant que le modele du latin classique. On a reconnu et isole des interpolations penetrees dans le texte, a part les deux deja signalees par Halm. L'etude comparee du texte des citations ciceroniennes et de la tradition directe du De Inventione a montre que certains passages, que le precedent editeur avait cru errones et modifies, remontent en fait a la copie utilisee par Victorinus et non pas a un accident de la tradition manuscrite. Les notes qui suivent le texte latin contiennent la discussion des choix en matiere de constitution du texte ; dans les chapitres introductifs on trouvera une section relative a l'histoire du texte des Explanationes et une analyse detaillee de la tradition medievale. ‎Better known to western medieval travelers as Zayton, Quanzhou in Fujian was China?s main port and also the terminus of the Maritime Silk Road. The city was home to a cosmopolitan population especially when China was under Mongol rule (ca. 1280-1368 CE). Italian visitors to and inhabitants of the city included Marco Polo, Odoric of Pordenone and Andrew of Perugia. The city had a significant Christian population, both Catholic and Church of the East (Nestorian), and the nearby town of Jinjiang has to this day in its neighbourhood a Manichaean shrine housing a unique statue of Mani as the Buddha of Light. These religious communities left a wealth of art on stone which first came to light in Mid-Twentieth Century but is still very little known and studied outside China. This volume containing over 200 illustrations (many in full colour) is the work of a team of scholars from Australian universities in collaboration with the major museums in Quanzhou and Jinjiang and is the first major work on this unique material in a western language.
