ESTC 11371 and preceded by the Book of Common Prayer 1704 edition ESTC t81273 . Bound at the end is: The Whole Book of Psalms Collected into Engish Metre ESTC T195264. A very nice copy published by Charles Bill who has included the Whole Book of Psalms with the title page notation: "laying aside all ungodly songs and ballads which tend to the nourishing of vice and corrupting of youth". From the late 16th century on those with a Puritan orientation had the Psalms in metre using the words of Thomas Sternhold d. 154- and John Hopkins d. 154-. This edition of the Psalms usually reflected a careful attention to avoiding some of the allusions to lust or frivolity to have full attention to the worship of God. A very nice copy bound in black morocco engraved panel design with owner' name Margaret Roe on both front and rear boards in gilt on the first title page the book is further gifted to one of her children Francis spine fully gilt decorated marbled endpapers corners rounded all edges gilt but mostly faded a couple of tiny chips to foot smal piece torn away at a8 marginal only and another pice torn away on B1 marginal but just abscuring a bit of the side notes hinges somewhat weakened but quite sturdy the last two endpapers with tears at gutter. Bound in period dark red leather with gilt tooling five raised bands to spine. Marbled endpapers. All edges originally gilt but only faint evidence of this. Previous owners initials A.S.H. in gilt on the front cover the reverse of the front endpaper bears the inscription Ann Speed Hodgskin her book 1789. Another later previous owners name on reverse of frontispiece. The covers are quite rubbed and shelfworn binding holding firmly. The page facing plate 22 has a three inch horizontal tear. Light browning to text throughout. Foxing to last few pages. Three works bound in one volume. H7 says “Finis†but it is possible that there is another missing leaf H8 before ¶1. V5 of Bible has a 40 mm tear into the text with no loss repaired. Light age-toning minor occasional brown spots. A very good copy. . Binding: Contemporary full gilt calf repetitive semi-circle and fleur-de-lis design on the inside along a straight lined gilt border within another straight lined gilt border with gilt floral design corner pieces and gilt floral design in the centre of each side of the outer border all within another repetitive oval and floral gilt border on both upper and lower boards. Rebacked expertly saving the original spine with 7 densely gilt compartments of raised bands title in gilt on two all edges in gilt marbled paste-down and free end papers. Notes: An early copy of the King James Bible which was first published in 1611.
