Ruth Rendell
The Monster in the Box Signed 1st
London: Hutchinson 2009. First. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. The Monster in the Box is Rendell's 22nd in the Inspector Wexford series.

Wexford has long suspected Eric Targo of being a serial killer. Decades later he finally admits this to DI Mike Burden his longtime colleague and friend. In an apparently unrelated matter DS Hannah Goldsmith and Burden's second wife Jenny both approach Wexford with concerns about Tamima one of Jenny Burden's students.

As a young detective constable he investigated the murder of Elsie Carroll. Wexford suspects that while her husband purported to be at a whist club he was actually with his mistress when his wife was killed. George Carroll was acquitted of his wife's murder on a technicality but was still shunned by Kingsmarkham residents; Wexford believes him innocent. In the weeks of and following the investigation into Elsie Carroll's death Targo a scarf covering his prominent birthmark walks his dog past the young Wexford's rooming house to taunt him or so it appears to Wexford.

By the 1970s Targo has become a prosperous businessman several times married and divorced living in the north of England. Targo reappears in Kingsmarkam. Wexford suspects that Targo has murdered the autistic son of a Myringham widow who wishes her son dead so she can marry her longtime partner.

In the book's present Targo reappears again still with his dogs without the naevus but with a private menagerie.

This copy is fine in black cloth with gilt titles on the spine. No marks or damage at all. The unclipped DJ is also excellent.
. AB17. Hutchinson hardcover

The strange relationship if it could be called that had gone on for years decades and he had never breathed a word about it. He had kept silent because he knew no one would believe him. None of it could be proved not the stalking not the stares or the conspiratorial smiles not the killings not any of the signs Targo had made because he knew Wexford knew and could do nothing about it."Wexford had almost made up his mind that he would never again set eyes on Eric Targo's short muscular figure. And yet there he was back in Kingsmarkham still with that cocky strutting walk.Years earlier when Wexford was a young police officer a woman called Elsie Carroll had been found strangled in her bedroom. Although many still had their suspicions that her husband was guilty no one was convicted. Another woman was strangled shortly afterwards and every personal and professional instinct told Wexford that the killer was still at large. And it was Eric Targo. A psychopath who would kill again. As the Chief Inspector investigates a new case Ruth Rendell looks back to the beginning of Wexford's career even to his courtship of the woman who would become his wife. The past is a haunted place with clues and passions that leave an indelible imprint on the here and now.
Doubleday Canada hardcover

The Secret House of Death 1st Signed
London: John Long 1968. First UK. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good-. From ruthrendell.info

Ruth Rendell is one of the true all-time greats. The Secret House of Death changed my life with its utterly perfect unguessable twist.

—Sophie Hannah 1

It was his third visit to the gloomy house on Orchard Drive. Each time he parked in the same place carried a briefcase and was greeted by Louise North at the door.

Is it sin to rush into the secret house of death ere death dare come to us
Antony and Cleopatra Act 4 Sc. 16

Susan Townsend was the only resident with no interest in the neighbourhood gossip about the affair going on next door.
Yet it was Susan who found the murdered bodies of the lovers locked not in passion but in death. And it was Susan whose own life would be imperilled by a monstrous crime far beyond the imaginings of the vilest gossiping tongues.

This copy is near fine in brown cloth with gilt titles on the spine. Very slight bumping at the spine ends and a lightly stamped number on the copyright page are the only issues. The unclipped DJ has very slight edge wear but it is approximately 1/4" shorter than the book itself. It is not clear if that is a publication anomaly a trimmed jacket for some reason or a jacket borrowed from another edition. As a result I am rating the jacket as a VG-
Signed by Rendell on the title page.
Very scarce first in jacket and signed.
. EB18. John Long hardcover

Garden City NY: The Crime Club Doubleday & Co 1968. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Near Fine. This is the third book in Rendell's Inspector Wexford series. As with all of her early book's first editions whether UK or US are quite scarce and signed firsts are even scarcer.

This copy is very good in red cloth with silver titles on the spine. Slight bumping at the spine ends and slight wear along the bottom edge. And the book does lean a little. The rear endpaper has a vertical area where it appears that a library card pocket may have been removed but there are no other library indications at all. Wolf to the Slaughter UK 1st
London: John Long 1967. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. This is the third book in Rendell's Inspector Wexford series. As with all of her early books first editions are quite scarce and this title is often considered the rarest of all. And many of the copies of her early books went to public libraries rather than to the retail market.

This copy is very good in black cloth with gilt titles on the spine. The covers are in unusually good condition for it having been a library copy. Very slight bumping at the spine ends and very slight wear along the bottom edge. The front hinge has been tape reinforced but the binding is otherwise sound. Ex-library with ink stamps on the front pastedown and flyleaf and another ink stamp on the title page.
