Randle Rosalind; Judith Verity illustrator; Whittington Press
Rose's Aga Recipes. Illustrated with six linocuts by Judith Verity
Andoversford: The Whittington Press Manor Farm 1984. Imperial 16mo. 19.5 x 14 cm. 44 pages. Text set in 12-point Bell. Printed in black the illustrations in reddish-brown on Zerkall Silurian paper. Bound by Smith Settle. FIRST EDITION one of 250 unnumbered copies. There was also a deluxe edition of thirty copies with the illustrations colored by hand and enclosed in a black clamshell box. One of the most charming of late 20th century cookbooks. The text evokes the ordinary manner in which recipes are collected and adapted in the home kitchen over time and the illustrations perfectly match this depicting the family mid-meal the author bending into the reach in for ingredients or picking fallen fruit while hanging laundry. Judith Verity obtained material for the lino by pulling up part of the floor of the village school nearby and the first job in printing was to scrape the cement off the back of each cut. WOMEN'S CAMERA WORK:; SELF/BODY/OTHER IN AMERICAN VISUAL CULTURE
Durham: Duke University Press 1998. Second printing. Thick 8vo. xii 494 pp. b&w illustrations from photographs and drawings. Remainder line on bottom edge; else fine in illustrated stiff wrappers. "Women's Camera Work explores how photographs have been and are used to construct versions of history and examines how photographic representations of otherness often tell stories about the self. In the process Judith Fryer Davidov focuses on the lives and work of a particular network of artists linked by time interaction influence and friendship--one that included Gertrude Kasebier Imogen Cunningham Dorothea Lange and Laura Gilpin.

Women's Camera Work ranges from American women's photographic practices during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to a study of landscape photography. Using contemporary cultural studies discourse to critique influential male-centered historiography and the male-dominated art world Davidov exhibits the work of these women; tells their absorbing stories; and discusses representations of North American Indians African Americans Asian Americans and the migrant poor. Evaluating these photographers' distinct contributions to constructions of Americanness and otherness she helps us to discover the power of reading images closely and to learn to see through these women's eyes." Entire villages holding their breath: how many diver's lives lost in the oyster beds for a royal crown" The poems by Fainlight are a perfect compliment to Rothchild's characteristically black-velvet mezzotints infused with sexual overtones of elegance and luxury offering the perfect medium for the mysteriously creative cradle of the pearl.
