Signed by Saul Raskin in Hebrew and English and dated 1955. Raskin has also wriiten what appears to be a Yiddish poem underneath the signature. Pages are clean no writing underlining or highlighting but yellowed with age. Binding is cracked but not broken; pages are secure. Boards have some minor soiling in a few spots minor rubbing to head/heel of spine and corners. DJ is heavily sunned with several stains. Very worn and missing the spine panel. Heavy rubbing/chipping/creasing/tearing to all extremities. Nevertheless looks nice in protective mylar covering. This is not a remainder or ex-library. No previous owner markings. Imprint from title page verso. Color printing; title page in green and purple. Other Titles: Haggadah. English & Hebrew. Raskin 1878-1966 was an “illustrator painter printmaker critic. Born in Nogaisk Russia Raskin studied lithography in Odessa and attended art academies in Germany Switzerland France and Italy. In 1904 he emigrated to the U. S. He worked in many media and garnered a reputation for his draftsmanlike attention to detail and his realistic approach. His imagery depicted scenes of Jewish life especially that of New York’s Lower East Side. His trips to Palestine yielded many representations of that country’s Jewish population among them twenty lithographs of Jerusalem. Raskin also illustrated many Hebrew texts including Pirke Aboth the Haggadah Psalms the Siddur Kabbalah in Word and Image and other works with Jewish content such as Hebrew Rhapsody. Pirke Aboth demonstrates Raskin’s wonderful sense of design; he makes dramatic use of blank space as a component of his compositions as well as underscores the meaning of each of the book’s sections with a powerful combination of human and fantastic forms each revealing carefully rendered details of expression. Raskin was the art and theater critic for the Yiddish weekly magazine Does Neie Land. In 1911 Raskin’s “The Future of Jewish Art †appeared in the magazine. In the article Raskin bemoans the inability to find common Jewish attributes in the works of such artists as Antokolsky Israels Liebermann and Pissarro. Raskin postulated that a Jewish Art sic might emerge through the identification of common themes and subjects in the work of his contemporaries specifically in genre and history paintings rather than through an examination of the widely varied techniques forms and styles used by artists of Jewish heritage. Raskin’s work has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy. No Place: Saul Raskin. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. 1960. Hardcover. B & W and Color; 12 1/2 x 15 1/4 ; 128 pages; Hard cover is green with silver lettering on front. Boards have bumping rubbing sunning scuffing. DJ has sunning flaps are blue but rest of DJ is a grey/green. Front flap is slightly clipped at bottom with sticker residue at top. DJ has rubbing sunning chipping nicking scuffing and some small chunks missing along edges. Pages are clean and tight. Captions on pictures are in English and Hebrew. Book reads from right to left. Raskin was a member of the American Watercolor Society the Society of American Etchers the Audubon Artists and the New York Watercolor Club.
