Wien / Vienna: Hraschanzky 1804. Hardcover. Fair. This volume only one of several volumes of Alfasi's commentaries and codification of Talmudic law. Folio 16 x 11 inches fair copy at best heavy wear to binding boards detached and worn spine perished some splits into parts; will need to be rebound. The contents are nice and bright the title page has some wear and loss but the vast majority of the pages are in excellent condition appears to be complete. Alfasi 1013-1103 was a Maghrebi Talmudist and posek decider in matters of halakha - Jewish law. He is best known for his work of halakha the legal code Sefer Ha-halachot considered the first fundamental work in halakhic literature. His name "Alfasi" means "of Fez" in Arabic but opinions differ as to whether he ever lived in Fez. In Hebrew. A worthy candidate for rebinding and priced accordingly. Hraschanzky hardcover

A charmingly bound duo of comedy plays that were performed at the Theatres Royal London 'The Hypocrite' and 'The Wife's Stratagem'. A very scarce duo of comedy plays bound together both of which were performed at the Theatres Royal. In half calf binding with marbled boards. Included in this book are two comedy plays. 'The Hypocrite' by Isaac Bickerstaff is a reworking of the play 'Non-Juror' by Colley Cibber itself inspired by Moliere's 'Tartuffe'. The original play derived much of its humour from the politics of the era and so Bickerstaff altered the role of Doctor Wolf to Doctor Cantwell a hypocritical Methodist. With authentic descriptions of the costumes and stage directions as well as an illustration prior to the work depicting Act V. Scene I. The second play is titled 'The Wife's Stratagem' by English playwright John Poole and is altered from 'The Gamester' by James Shirley a noteworthy play for its realistic and detailed picture of gambling in its era. In half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally smart. With rubbing to the extremities and slight marks to the boards. With a bookplate of one Mrs. Nathaniel Hibbert to the front pastedown. A complete four volume edition of the popular early eighteenth century literary magazine founded by Richard Steele. Running between 1709 and 1711 'The Tatler' was a British literary and society journal begun by Richard Steele with significant contributions from Joseph Addison. It was written under the pseudonym 'Isaac Bickerstaff'.The running titles reflect that this was first published under the title 'The Tatler'.It represented a new approach to journalism featuring cultivated essays on contemporary matters and established the pattern that would be copied in such works as Addison and Steele's The Spectator and Samuel Johnson's The Rambler and The Idler.A complete four volume edition with volume I published in 1723 ESTC T1239 and volumes II-IV in 1737 ESTC N19109.With an index to the rear of each volume.With former owner's inscriptions dated 1775 to head of volume II-IV title pages with further crossed out ink markings. In full calf bindings. Small losses of leather to head and tail of each volume. Volume I boards exceptionally tender with rear board of volume I held by one cord only. Volume II front joint and volumes III and IV front and rear joints starting with boards firmly held. Ink inscriptions to head of volumes II and IV title pages with further crossed out ink markings.
