Seventeen sheets of unbound folded paper in paper covered boards potfolio with booklet with illustrated floral stapled wraps laid-in. Walter Stein's visual interpretation of Chidiock Tichborne's final poem Elegy. Tichborne penned this poem in 1586 during his imprisonment in the Tower of London while awaiting execution for his alleged involvement in the babington Conspiracy "an attempt to dethrone Queen Elizabeth and replace her with Mary Queen of Scotland." The booklet included is an essay from the seventh edition of "Curiosities of Literature" written by Isaac Disraeli in 1823 describing Tichborne's loyal life before his imprisonment. All seventeen plates illustrated with color and b&w reproductions of drawings intended to represent respective lines from the poem which are written on the page. Inscribed on inside front board with date of November 4th 1967. Scuffing to portfolio and slipcase boards. Paper chipped at few edges of slipcase. Very good condition. Walter Stein unknown

Also with numbers inside a yellow square border. A lovely work bright white paper old folds a few old mends on the back near the edges else very clean bright copy. Shows Japan prior to much real Western influence. Illustrates the various provinces with cities rivers mountains lakes and other important places and features cited. Shows Matsumai and Jesso at the extreme North Hokkaido Tanaxima Tanigashima in Nagasaki area to the South with the Golfo di Jedo Tokyo Bay G A Fusy Jamma ie Fuji Yama or Mt. Fuji several islands on Japan's Western side with Nagasaki one of the earliest spelling of this famous place cited along with Firando Island Hirado the place the Portuguese first arrived in 1549. This is a famous map cited and illustrated in several reference books. THE CARTOGRAPHER: Isaac Tirion died 1769 was a cartographer printer & publisher in Amsterdam. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Tony Campbell: JAPAN: European Printed Maps to 1800 page 18 item #58 and plate XXI for a nice picture of this exact map. While the text states that "Naatzgasaki is now lettered Nangasacki" there is a discrepancy here for in fact our map does clearly spell it "Nagasaki." A lovely example ready for framing and display. . unknown

This wonderful engraving was executed 2 years after this by the notable Dutch publisher of books periodicals and atlases; Isaac Tirion. The Lord Mayor of London is an office that dates back to the final years of the 12th century and it is the legal title for person who is the head of The City of London Corporation. Amsterdam 1765. Engraved hand-colored map matted and framed. A beautiful hand-colored map of the American southwest focusing on the Southern California Baja California the Gulf of California and Arizona notwithstanding the title there is no portion of New Mexico depicted. Tirion names San Diego the Santa Catalina Islands Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas on the coast plus Casa Grande on the River Gila which though marked as a mission was a large site of a Native American ruin. He includes images of missions and forts in Baja at San Jose del Cabo and Loretto.<br /> <br /> This is apparently the earliest printing of the map published in Tirion’s Nieuwe en Beknopte Hand-Atlas 1765. Excellent example from the top left: Shows Mogol Acham Yunnan Queycheu Qvamsi Guangxi Quanton Canton Macao Hong Kong was yet to be named though it shows that area. . Originally from "Atlante Novissimo." . GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES & CITIES: Shows mountains rivers cities capitals country border lines lakes seas islands. Important cities with red dots: Canton Macao Singapore Yunnan Fu Quecilin Guilin Ava Jutia Ayutthaya Cambodia Singcapoera Singapore Sambas Laua Tourane Baubon & many others. . HAND COLORING: The map has been hand-colored at some later time after publication date. Country and other boundaries are outlined & colored. The Tropic of Cancer is near the top in bold red horizontal line. . SHEET SIZE: The sheet is a bit irregular in size about 38.1 cm. left to right; top to bottom 30 cm. There is evidence of the old copper-plate edges as usual. . CONDITION: The map is exceptional clean coming from a smaller atlas it has four feint old folds. The original thin laid paper has been professionally and neatly re-backed restoring a feint small diagonal tear at he upper right corner. This is barely noticeable. .
