The great violinist Isaac Stern seated next to him reaches towards the score while the classical music producer and clarinetist David Oppenheim stands at left smoking a pipe. The three together with a partially visible fourth man appear to be attentively listening to the playback. Photographed by Cellist Emmerich Gara during a studio recording session with his name & address stamped on the verso of the photograph. Identified by him on the verso as "Leonard Bernstein & Isaac Stern / CBS Recording Session Spring 1956" the photograph is signed by Gara in pencil on the verso. Fine. <p>The Koussevitzky Foundation commissioned Leonard Bernstein to compose "The Serenade after Plato's Symposium" in memory of Serge and Natalie Koussevitzky. Bernstein completed the work for solo violin strings and percussion on August 7 1954 and premiered the work in Venice with violinist Isaac Stern and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra on September 12th of that year. Bernstein & Stern subsequently recorded "The Serenade" for Columbia Records with the Symphony of the Air on April 19 1956. The American clarinetist David Jerome Oppenheim 1922-2007 was also a classical music and television producer directing the Masterworks division of Columbia Records from 1950 to 1959.<p>Emmerich Gara b.1901 d.1963. Born in Vienna Austria in 1901 Gara established lifelong careers as a portrait photographer and professional cellist. Before the outbreak of the Second World War he and his wife emigrated to the United States where he was hired as cellist for the NBC Orchestra led by Arturo Toscanini. He performed with the orchestra later called The Symphony of the Air until his death.<p>From his seat in the front row of the orchestra Gara was in the unique position to photograph all the great conductors and soloists who appeared with the orchestra during this extraordinary period of musical activity. His subjects were captured in performance rehearsal and in candid moments during recordings and while socializing.<p>Gara's action portraits were used for record covers for the Book of the Month Club and in articles in Time Life and other major magazines around the world. Cloth rather spotted corners bumped but the binding solid with no wear to joints or hinges. A few spots of foxing to title page half of the tissue guards with overall very faint foxing/browning the illustrations with minor foxing at edges and in margins but the images themselves clean and bright and all in all a really excellent copy the text wide-margined and quite clean and fresh and the plates with rich coloring.<br/> <br/> Illustrated with beautiful color plates this anti-Newtonian work promotes a view of the universe based on the backward-looking beliefs professed by a Protestant sect known as the Muggletonians. Named after co-founder Lodowicke Muggleton the Muggletonians emerged in London in 1651 based on the claims of two tailors who professed to be the "Last Witnesses" described in the Book of Revelation. Rejecting the new directions in philosophical reason Muggletonians believed in a purely scriptural interpretation of the universe. According to E. P. Thompson's 1994 "Witness Against the Beast" the Muggletonians had curious notions quite contrary to other Protestant denominations: they believed that the soul is mortal that Jesus and God are one and the same that Heaven was left without divine supervision from Jesus' death until the day of judgment that Heaven resides six miles above the Earth that God stands between five and six feet tall and other unconventional things. Although the sect initially avoided both worship and evangelizing during the 19th century some followers became more outspoken about their beliefs and even published books appealing to the general public. Our author Isaac Frost 1793-1858 was a prominent Muggletonian and successful owner of a brass foundry who along with his brother Joseph invested large sums to promote their belief system--the present work being an especially notable example. Divided into two main sections the text first describes the Newtonian system of heliocentric astronomy and then turns to Frost's scriptural interpretation and geocentric views. As Reid tells us "According to Frost Scripture clearly states that the Sun the Moon and the Stars are embedded in a firmament made of congealed water and revolve around the Earth that Heaven has a physical reality above and beyond the stars and that the planets and the Moon do not reflect the Sun's rays but are themselves independent sources of light. Our book was apparently written as a reaction against the lecturers who expressed Newtonian astronomy--which was often for them and their audiences simply shorthand for heliocentrism." The 11 plates that illustrate these extraordinary ideas are the work of George Baxter a pioneering printer who revolutionized color printing techniques by combining metal engravings with woodblock printing using oil-based inks to produce high-quality affordable prints. The plates here are appropriately ethereal and otherworldly utilizing a beautiful palette with subtle gradations and esoteric figures to create memorable pseudo-scientific imagery. Although this work appears at auction with some regularity it is almost always incomplete no doubt because the attractiveness of its plates encourages harvesting. Useful price comparisons include a complete copy said to be in fine condition selling for £7500 in 2016 and six loose prints from the book fetching £6875 in 2015. A good copy in the publisher's brown cloth with a large chip to the top of the spine affecting part of the stamped title. Ex-American Philosophical Society library with a small label to the spine and their stamp on the title page else unblemished internally. A presentation copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Dr. Isaac Parrish a prominent member of the committee and a leading Philadelphia doctor and social reformer on the front free endpaper possibly in a secretarial hand: "To Library Amer Philos. Society from Dr. Isaac Parrish Member of the Committee." This extensive review of the condition of public health in American cities is an early example of organized public health advocacy in America. In-depth analyses of housing and sanitation infrastructure and hospital capacities are presented at length. The AMA had only been founded two years before this report in 1847 and began publishing its "Transactions" in 1848 still published today as the highly distinguished "JAMA". Thus this extensive report is one of the first large-scale studies produced by the AMA and represents a significant record of American medicine during a period of rapid change on the frontier rapidly crowding cities and the limited capacity of small local governments and a weak federal government to meet the challenges of widespread disease outbreaks.<br /> <br /> A lengthy eulogy for Dr. Parrish by Dr. Samuel Jackson presented to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was published by Lippincott in 1853 and lists Parrish's many accomplishments. He was an early Abolitionist as well as an advocate for prison reform and other difficult social questions of the day. He wrote at length on the problems and possible solutions to various sanitary conditions in his hometown of Philadelphia and advocated for better sanitation infrastructure.<br /> <br /> OCLC holdings for this offprint are muddled with some digital-only holdings difficult to distinguish from physical holdings. Nevertheless only perhaps a dozen or so copies are retained by institutions and presumably not a great many of these were printed. Final 10 leaves slightly creased one repaired marginal tear but still A FINE COPY INTERNALLY exceptionally bright smooth and entirely fresh and clean.<br/> <br/> This generously proportioned production illustrated with 13 vibrant colored plates is a rare European account of Japan during the period in which the country was "closed" to the west offered here in its first English edition. Originally published in French in 1820 "Illustrations of Japan" is comprised of a history and description of the Tokugawa shogunate which Titsingh had translated from the Japanese plus Titsingh's own observations on the language customs and ceremonies of the Japanese people. The present English edition is accompanied by plates in etching and aquatint enhanced with hand coloring. Our author Dutch diplomat Isaac Titsingh 1745-1812 spent 14 years in Nagasaki for the Dutch East India company and between 1779-84 he served as trade director-cum-ambassador travelling to Edo now Tokyo for audiences with the shogun and other high officials in the shogunate. Unlike most of his Western contemporaries Titsingh was open-minded and curious about the people he encountered engaging with their art and culture; in fact art historian and Victoria & Albert Museum keeper Edward F. Strange tells us that Titsingh is the earliest known European collector of Japanese prints of which a number appear in the present volume. Our publisher Rudolph Ackermann 1764-1834 made his living issuing sumptuously illustrated books such as the present volume and was an early adopter of color aquatint and lithography technologies; Hardie writes that he was "the great presiding genius before whose magic wand so many pictorial books sprang into existence." In very attractive period morocco this is a particularly appealing copy of the work free of the foxing and offsetting that often plague copies of this and other large-format color illustrated books. Contains the â€Exercitatio.†52 pp â€Systema theologicum ex Prae-Adamitarum hypothesi†260 pp and â€Synagogis Judaeorum universis†7 pp. Isaac de la Peyrère 1594-1676 was a calvinistic lawyer who later converted into catholicism. In 1654 he lived in a house in the Southern Netherlands adjoining that of the recently abdicated Queen Christina of Sweden. Christina is said to have financed the anonymous publication of â€Prae-Adamitaeâ€. La Peyrère’s explanation of St. Paul’s words in Chapter 5 verses 12-14 of his Epistle to the Romans that the world was inhabited before Adam and that it therefore must have been two creations raised in 1656 a storm of indignation. The â€Prae-Adamitae†was condemned and burned in public in Paris and La Peyrère was imprisoned but released after he regretting his views. His theory have had an impact on later polygenism and racism. hardcover

Oblong 8vo. 145 x 2 70 mm. 5 ¾ x 10 ½ inches. 10 2 105 3 pp. Contemporary leather spine over paper covered boards; spine and boards rubbed with a 2 x 2-inch circle of paper missing from lower board; paper stock aged brown and lightly foxed small piece missing from title-page not affecting text. This copy with the repeated inscription which reads "Henry Landis his book bought in Harrisburg January 20th 1818." With faults a very good copy of a scarce book. First edition reprinted in Harrisburg in 1822. John Wyeth was a Harrisburg printer who produced music and voice books for ministers and church groups during the first quarter of the 19th century. He was the first printer to use shape-note type in his books for the German religious community. In addition to printing for Rev. Isaac Gerhart he printed music books for James Doll and Johannes Rothbaust. Rev. Isaac Gerhart was a Reformed Minister of the Lykens Valley in Dauphin County Pennsylvania. "In addition to preaching administering the sacraments and conducting catechetical instructions Rev. Gerhart set about to improve church worship. He found a 'great defect' in the singing in those early churches. Since he had musical knowledge and talent he prepared a music book called Church Harmonia."
