Other Titles: Dr. Isaak Erter's gesammelte Schriften. Erter 1791-1851 was a �Hebrew satirist of the Haskalah. Born in Koniuszek near Przemysl Erter during the earlier part of his life lived in various places including Lvov where he together with a group of young maskilim was excommunicated in 1816 by Rabbi Jacob Ornstein; Budapest where he studied medicine; and Brody then an important commercial and cultural center for Galician Jewry where he settled in 1831 and remained for the rest of his life. In addition to his literary work Erter was also active communally among Haskalah circles showing special interest in the plans for a reform of contemporary Jewish society. Toward the end of his life he collaborated with his friend Y. H. Schorr in the early stages of the founding of He-Halutz a Hebrew periodical dedicated to the study of Judaica in the spirit of religious reform and distinguished by a boldly critical treatment of problems relating to Jewish tradition. Erter's only book Ha-Zofeh le-Veit Yisrael consists of five satires all of which had been published separately with the addition of some personal correspondence relevant to his literary career. Noteworthy among the satires are the following: Hasidut ve-Hokhmah Tashlikh and Gilgul Nefesh. Written in the form of epistles several of the satires seem to have been modeled on the work of Lucian the second-century Greek satirist whose writings were very popular in European Rationalist literature and which Erter came to know in Wieland's German translation. Lucian's satiric and ironic treatment of Greek mythology and of ignorant and boorish antiquity during its decline was adapted by Erter in his fight against the traditionalist Jewish society of his day. The recurring character � a type of "persona satirae" � "the watchman of the House of Israel " has its source in the prophet-castigator of Ezekiel 3: 17; by virtue of the authority of the biblical figure Erter's watchman reviews the reality of Jewish society in Galicia and Poland in the first half of the 19th century. In this narrative written in an autobiographical manner the "observer" gathers evidence and confronts the reader with confessions of figures belonging to an imaginary fanciful world confessions made in a dream state or after death. Having endowed them with a keen rhetoric ability Erter enables these figures to explain their character and experience by ironic exaggeration coupled with the idealistic pathos characteristic of the Haskalah movement� Werses in EJ 2007 . To refute the arguments of the writers against the Jewish religion and to show the superiority of Judaism Troki wrote his epoch-making �Hizzuk Emunah��. The author begins by demonstrating that Jesus was not the Messiah predicted by the Prophets�.Troki died before completing his work the index �. The work was first published with a Latin translation by Wagenseil in his �Tela Ignea Satanae� Freiberg 1681 and was reprinted in Amsterdam 1705 Jerusalem 1845 and Leipsic 1857 . It was also translated into Judaeo-German Amsterdam 1717 into English by Mocatta London 1851 into German by David Deutsch Sohran 1865 2d ed. 1873 with the Hebrew text and into Spanish the last-mentioned translation being extant in manuscript. Through its Latin translation the �Hizzuk Emunah� became the object of passionate debates in Christian circles; and it�s arguments against Christianity were used by all freethinkers. Los Angeles: Golan-Globus Productions 1979. Three original draft title card maquettes hand lettered by Harold Adler for the 1979 film. Based on the 1960 novel by Isaac Bashevis Singer. The three sketches show different approaches to the title all distinct from the final lettering design used. Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "The Magician of Lublin" his credits include "Comanche!" 1956 "The Man with the Golden Arm" 1955 "The Seven Year Itch" 1955 "Carmen Jones" 1954 "Psycho" 1960 "The Birds" 1963 "In the Heat of the Night" 1967 and "Finian's Rainbow" 1969. In 2012 an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation Kansas City. At the turn of the Twentieth century a Jewish stage magician and con man whose career has been ruined by womanizing gets one more shot at the big time by attempting to pull off a never before seen trick. Isaack Leeser Philadelphia" Cancellation reads "New York/Sep 1/5 Cts". 2nd envelope lacks the rear may have been a letter folded into an envelope so front panel only with nice 1851 US postage stamp. Addressed to "Revd Isaac Leesser/Editor of the Ocident/Philadelphia. " Cancellation not legible. Isaac Leeser was an "American rabbi author translator editor and publisher; pioneer of the Jewish pulpit in the United States and founder of the Jewish press of America.Leeser participated in all Jewish movements. He was the earnest promoter of all the national enterprises-the first congregational union the first Hebrew day-schools the first Hebrew college the first Jewish publication society-and of numberless local undertakings. The Occident acquired a national and even an international reputation; the Maimonides' College of which he was president paved the way for future Jewish colleges in the United States; and his translation of the Bible became an authorized version for the Jews of America. In the religious controversies of his time Leeser took an active part on the Conservative side and lived and died in the unshakable belief that the existence of opposing parties was but transient and short-lived. Sidur Sifte Tsadikim Leeser's comprehensive Sephardic prayer book was the first American prayerbook containing the liturgy for the entire year. It contains the original Hebrew text and an English translation. Starting with the 2nd Revised edition of 1853 Leeser changed to this smaller 12mo "more portable form.As to correctness I pledge my word that the text and translation shall be far in advance of any which have hitherto appeared" adv. In the Occident Dec. 1851 cited in Goldman . In the preface to the 1853 edition Leeser noted the he had changed the translations of Bible passages to conform to the Bible translation he was completing elsewhere. This work thus contains the original Hebrew text and an English translation. Leeser marketed his prayer book both to audiences in American and the British colonies in the Caribbean and he thus included prayers on behalf of a Monarch and a Republican government. Reprinted a number of times throughout the 19th & 20th Centuries it became the standard prayer book for Sephardic Jews in North America. Leeser founded the first Jewish Publication Society of America and "brought many important works to the attention of the American Jewish community. He published the first Hebrew primer for children 1838 the first complete English translation of the Sephardi prayer book 1848 sic 1837-8 and numerous textbooks for children. He founded the first Hebrew high school 1849 the first Jewish representative and defense organization in 1859 the Board of Delegates of American Israelites Maimonides College and the first American Jewish rabbinical school in 1867. His major literary achievement was the first American translation of the Bible .published in 1845. This became the standard American Jewish translation of the Bible until the new Jewish Publication Society translation of 1917.Leeser was a traditionalist who did much to stem the tide of Reform. Although he was identified with the Sephardi community his influence affected the entire community and he laid the foundations for many of the key institutions of present-day Jewish life.
