Philadelphia: Hubbard Bros. Fair with no dust jacket. Hardcover. 785 pp. Index. No date circa late 1800s. "The whole profusely illustrated" with wonderful engravings a few colored. Although the author calls it a book of "idol worship" it is really a comparative religion course. And though a Christian the author is also a well-traveled and well educated fellow who looks at other religions very fairly gives pretty much the straight facts about their major characteristics how they were founded common practices etc. He finds the other religions lacking in correctness and never hesitates to say so! but is nevertheless a sympathetic and interested listener and reporter. In addition to the native religions of Africa and the Americas he also includes Hinduism Islam Buddhism Shintoism Confucism Taoism etc. Really quite an excellent primer on world religions with a Victorian slant of course. Leather spine with five bands is chipped at top edge bottom is missing about one inche spine gilt bright gilt lines outlining leather portions of the covers leather is scuffed and worn bright gilt edges to pages. Interior is reinforced binding signatures showing a bit due to sheer weight of this book pages unmarked and quite clean. Fairly hard to find.; Large 8vo . Hubbard Bros. hardcover
