Auflage 1879) : Die Kunst des Mittelalters und der Renaissance // Teil III Skulptur // Teil IV Malerei. -- Die Anordnung des Buches, an welche sich der Leser mit Hülfe des sorgfältigen Registers bald gewöhnen wird, war die einzig mögliche, wenn der Hauptzweck, die Behandlung der Denkmäler nach ihrem Kunstgehalt und ihren Bedingungen, auf so engem Raum erreicht werden sollte. Für schnelle Orientirung sorgen die Reisehandbücher. - Das Raisonnement des "Cicerone'' macht keinen Anspruch darauf, den tiefsten Gedanken, die Idee eines Kunstwerkes zu verfolgen und auszusprechen. Könnte man denselben überhaupt in Worten vollständig geben, so wäre die Kunst überflüssig und das betreffende Werk hätte ungebaut, nn-gemeisselt, ungemalt bleiben dürfen. Aber auch bis an die erlaubte Grenze bin ich nicht gegangen; schon die nothwendige Kürze verbot dies. Das Ziel, welches mir vorschwebte, war vielmehr Umrisse vorzuzeichnen, welche das Gefühl des Beschauers mit lebendiger Empfindung ausfüllen könnten. Mit mancherlei Ungleichheiten der Darstellung wird man Nachsicht üben bei einem Buche, welches zu zwei Drittheilen während der Reise geschrieben wurde. Den Stil gebe ich Preis. Mancher Satz wurde überfüllt, damit der Band nicht um ein paar Bogen dicker und schwerer gerathe als er leider schon ist. - Wenn ich etwas häufig in der ersten Person rede, so geschieht dies fast ausschliesslich, um zu bekennen, dass ich dieses oder jenes Kunstwerk nicht gesehen habe, oder um irgend eine von der Tradition abweichende Ansicht pflichtgemäss zu vertreten. Bei der Architektur habe ich mich nur im seltensten Fall der Kupferwerke und Abbildungen bedient. (Z.B. beiAnlass der Kirche von Montepulciano.) Es bleibt bedenklich, auch nach den besten Abbildungen auf den Eindruck zu schliessen, den das Nichtgesehene vermuthlich machen müsse. Gerne hätte ich z. B. aus den Werken von Percier und Fontaine eine Nachlese gehalten, namentlich für das Capitel von den römischen Villen, wo dann jene verführerische kleine Villa Sassetti jenseits Monte Mario einzureihen gewesen wäre. Allein es hätte mir begegnen können von Anlagen zu sprechen, deren eine Hälfte schon vom Zeichner ergänzt, deren andere Hälfte aber jetzt ohnedies nicht mehr vorhanden ist. Die Decoration des Renaissancestils hat hier einen eigenen Zwischenabschnitt erhalten, damit nicht die Darstellung der sämmtlichen drei Künste beständig durch dieses vierte Element unterbrochen würde. - In dem Abschnitt über Sculptur sind die Antiken vorherrschend nach demjenigen System geordnet, welches dem zweiten Theil von Ottfried Müllers ..Archäologie" zu Grunde liegt. Das betreffende Stück ist hauptsächlich für die Vielen geschrieben, welche zwar mit genussfähigem Auge begabt, allein nur auf ganze, harmonische Eindrücke vorbereitet und dem Fragmentarischen und Bedingten (das hier so sehr vorherrscht) abgeneigt sind. - Bei der neuern Sculptur ist der Abschnitt über den Barockstil (wie die entsprechenden Abschnitte der beiden andern Künste) etwas lang ausgefallen. Allein es erscheint mir als Thatsache, dass eine genaue und besonnene Mitbetrachtung dieser Epoche den Genuss der vollkommenen Werke der goldenen Zeit wesentlich steigern hilft. Allerdings gilt dies nur für uns Laien, denn der Künstler soll eigentlich nur das Beste anschauen. Bei der Malerei konnte es am wenigsten meine Aufgabe sein, den geistigen Inhalt erschöpfen zu wollen, der ja quantitativ unendlich reich sein kann; ich durfte nur der Betrachtung hie und da die Wege weisen und auf die Voraussetzungen hindeuten, unter welchen das einzelne Werk zu Stande kam. In den Namen-gebungen, deren Kritik überhaupt nicht Sache dieses Buches ist, folge ich den gewöhnlichen Annahmen, wo nicht meine besondere Ansicht als solche gegeben wird. Mai 1818 in Basel; ? 8. August 1897 ebenda) war ein Schweizer Kulturhistoriker mit Schwerpunkt Kunstgeschichte. Er lehrte jahrzehntelang an der Universität Basel. Grosse Bekanntheit erhielt er durch sein Buch Die Cultur der Renaissance in Italien. ... Burckhardts Aufenthalte in Italien und auch die Mitarbeit an Franz Kuglers Handbüchern zur Kunstgeschichte bewirkten eine Neuorientierung an den klassischen Idealen der Epoche Winckelmanns, Goethes und Wilhelm von Humboldts. So übernahm Burckhardt mehr und mehr eine europäisch-humanistische Sichtweise und rückte vom vorherrschenden Paradigma politischer Geschichte ab (vgl. Raupp, Spalte 855). Vernehmbar wird dies vor allem in seinen drei «klassischen» Werken, die ihn zum herausragenden Kulturhistoriker und Mitbegründer der modernen Kunstgeschichte werden liessen. Burckhardt widersprach entschieden geschichtsphilosophischen Spekulationen, die Geschichte als zeitliche Entwicklung eines übergeordneten, ewigen Geschichtsprozesses auffassten. Das einzig konstante Phänomen der Geschichte war für ihn die Natur des Menschen. Das Ziel des Daseins und der ganzen Geschichte blieb für Jacob Burckhardt rätselhaft. Burckhardts 1853 veröffentlichtes erstes Hauptwerk ist Die Zeit Constantins des Großen, die er als notwendigen Übergang von der Antike zum Christentum und als Grundlage der mittelalterlichen Kultur verstand (vgl. Spätantike). Burckhardt sah Kaiser Konstantin im Unterschied zur seinerzeit vorherrschenden Sichtweise recht negativ, als einen reinen Machtpolitiker, dessen Hinwendung zum Christentum nur politischen Überlegungen geschuldet gewesen sei. 1855 erschien sein zweites Werk Cicerone, in dem er die italienische Kunstwelt von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart schildert. Von grösster historiographischer Bedeutung war sein 1860 veröffentlichtes Werk Die Cultur der Renaissance in Italien, das den Strukturwandel von Staat und Kirche im Ausgang des Mittelalters und die damit einhergehende Ausbildung des «modernen», individuellen Menschen beschreibt. Dr. Jacob Burger 1832-1903 Jacob Burger was born in October 1832 in Ohio. Burger's 1903 death notice in the American Medicine Journal states that he graduated from the Eclectic Medical Institute at Cincinnati Ohio in 1856. Eclectic medicine was a branch of American medicine which made use of botanical remedies along with other substances and physical therapy practices which was popular in the latter half of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. The term was coined by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque 1784-1841 a physician who lived among the Native Americans and observed their use of medicinal plants. Rafinesque used the word eclectic to refer to those physicians who employed whatever was found to be beneficial to their patients. Burger is said to have settled at Franklin Square Columbiana County Ohio in 1859 where he established a medical practice. In the 1860 Census we find a "Jacob Burger" physician enumerated at Salem Columbiana County. The post office for this area of Salem was "Franklin Square." We learn also from the 1860 Census information that Burger was married his wife's name was Emma. The couple had two children Sarah aged 3 and an infant aged three months who was at the time still unnamed. The family was still living at Franklin Square in 1880 when that census was taken. Burger was listed as a physician surgeon. Dr. Burger spent the rest of his life at Franklin Square engaged in the practice of medicine he died there of a stroke on January 27 1903. Description of the Memorandum Book The first page of the volume bears the inscription "Coroners Witness Fee Certificate The State of Ohio Col. C. 1890." This note states that "Dr. J. Burger" acted as a witness and was to receive $ 10.00 for attendance as witness at the inquest of the death of a woman whose death was caused by "violence." The next section of the volume contains a two page discourse on "intellectual powers" and consists of a disquisition on the "brutishness" of the South Seas Islands people as compared to those "with intellectual powers." Following this is a fourteen page essay on politics headed: "Resolved: That in times of political discussion it is the duty of every citizen to express his sentiments freely and attach himself to some party." This essay was written as the "first debate with the Senior Class and finished on Saturday morning Oct 7th 1854 Wittenberg College D. Burger." The above section is followed by a fifty pages with notes on the "Lectures of Prof. King" consisting of sixteen different medical lectures for the school year of 1855-1856. The lectures were given by Prof. John King 1813-1893 who lectured at the Eclectic Medical Institute in Cincinnati from which Dr. Burger graduated. King published books on "women's diseases" as well as guides to health. He was professor of Obstetrics at the institute. The lectures cover various diseases their symptoms treatment with medical prescriptions. The final section of the volume includes a twelve page list of names and dates.
