3 1 blank 14; 1 1 blank 9 pp. plates.Second edition of both volumes of a remarkably detailed set of scale construction drawings plans sections elevations perspective views etc. including many detail drawings of individual parts of 18th-century Dutch waterworks with the accompanying letterpress descriptions and notes. It includes locks sluices bridges pumps pile drivers an ice-breaker an elaborate water-bailing mill and more. Most of the plates measure about 45 x 54 cm with the folding ones about 52 x 76 cm. At least most of the plates depict existing works and the text occasionally gives some historical information. The drawings are so detailed and give such a clear picture of how the mechanisms functioned that one could use them to reconstruct the works shown.A fine copy nearly untrimmed with only some false folds in the half-title and an occasional minor defect in the paper. Plate 23 in volume 1 has no number but it may have been trimmed off at the head. The inside front hinge has partly separated from the book-block but the binding is otherwise good. 12 318 14 pp.Rare first combined edition of two medical works by Jacob Horst 1537-1600 professor of medicine at the Julius University in Helmstadt first published separately by the same publisher in 1593 and appearing here for the second time. The first work is of special interest being a rare early treatise on dentistry. In it Horst tried to solve the famous mystery of the golden tooth. The second work is on sleepwalking a subject which from old seems to have greatly concerned parents and teachers since much attention was given to it in early medical and educational literature. There current publication however seems to be largely overlooked in the literature.With an owner's inscription on title-page dated 1598. Browned throughout with some water stains and a small hole in the gutter of 10 leaves in the second part; a fair copy. The illustrated title displays a series of images depicting Paradise and the fall of man. The main title is printed in red and black and contains a woodcut device with a Jesuit Christogram. Bound in full modern dark brown bonded leather with a French groove. The interior pages are generally clean and crisp and the plates are well executed with a sharp impression. The illustrated title and the main title are mildly age-toned; a tiny chip on the upper margin of the illustrated title is neatly patched. Two leaves S6-7 contain an area of chipping on the bottom margin edge probably a manufacturing flaw. This is the 1732 edition of Jacob Merlo Horstius�s hugely popular devotional book first printed in 1630; and with Schoonebeck�s engravings � 1683. Horstius�s �Paradisus� is divided into 7 sections � 1. on the worship of the Trinity 2. on the veneration of saints 3. on sin and penance 4. on the spiritual and religious life 5. on Holy Communion and the Mass 6. on the life and death of Christ 7. on the veneration of the Virgin the remembrance of death and the preparation for a happy death praeparatione bene beateque moriendi. He influenced a generation of rabbis by his kindly and pious character and personality as well as by his scholarship. He was the pure cloistered scholar completely absorbed in his studies.
