Er war der Sohn und Enkel von Tischlermeistern. Roubo schrieb mehrere sehr einflussreiche Bücher über die Holzbearbeitung eine Leistung die angesichts seiner relativ ärmlichen Verhältnisse und seiner autodidaktischen Methoden besonders bemerkenswert war.Seine Karriere erreichte 1774 ihren Höhepunkt als er sein Meisterwerk über die Holzbearbeitung mit dem Titel L'Art du Menuisier veröffentlichte. In diesem Werk das bereits seit langem existiert werden praktisch alle mit der Holzbearbeitung verbundenen Methoden und Berufe behandelt. Roubo was born and died in Paris and was the son and grandson of master cabinetmakers. Roubo wrote several highly influential books on woodworking an achievement which was especially notable given his relatively poor background and self-taught methods.His career was at its zenith in 1774 when he published his masterwork treatise on woodworking titled L’Art du Menuisier. This lseminal work covered practically all methods and trades associated with woodworking. Another of Roubo’s legacies still used today is a design for a workbench which has proven to be popular amongst modern woodworkers….Provenance: bookplates of Robert Stanton FAIA – Architect. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this very rare collection of letters to and from Rousseau and of works by and about Rousseau many of which were considered scandalous which explains why this collection was published in the Hague. 8 200 12 24 48 11 pp. Staatman the publisher thought up the idea of selling this book under two different titles. He printed two title-pages and two prefaces. One title-page reads: "Recueil d'opuscules concernant les ouvrages et les sentiments de nos philosophes modernes sur la religion l'education et les moeurs." The preface that follows that title-page begins: "Les Ouvrages & les Sentimens de nos Philosophes modernes sur la Religion l'Education & les Moeurs ont fait tant de bruit qu'il seroit superflu de vouloir y attirer l'attention du Public. D'habiles gens en divers pais ont pris la plume pour les refuter & leurs Livres plus ou moins repandus se trouvent par-tout." The other title-page reads: "Recueil d'opuscules concernant les ouvrages et les sentiments de monsieur J.-J. Rousseau sur la religion et l'education." And the preface that follows that title-page begins: "Les Ouvrages & les Sentimens de Mr. Rousseau sur la Religion & sur l'Education ont fait tant de bruit qu'il seroit superflu de vouloir y attirer l'attention du Public. D'habiles gens en divers pais ont pris la plume pour les refuter & leurs Livres plus ou moins repandus se trouvent par-tout." There is also an "Avis aux libraires" advising booksellers that if someone asks for the "Recueil contre M. Rousseau" he the bookseller should excise the first title-page and preface. Otherwise he should excise the second title-page and preface. The original customer for the copy at hand apparently fell into the second category. 8vo. The whole illustrated with Copper Plates. And an Explanation of the Structure of a Coach and Cart according to this Method. An interesting work on wheel bearings for vehicles mill work blocks pendulums etc. Rowe states in his preface that his improvements stem from his understanding of the principles of bearing construction in particular that the weight carried by a bearing rather than the contact area is the limiting factor in trying to reduce the friction of a bearing. He describes the use of friction wheels supporting the main axle whose axles in turn rest on other friction wheels. This system though not widely adopted was used in Atwoods machine. - Roger Gaskill. Rowe obtained a patent on his improvements which are illustrated in five plates along with their application to a horse drawn farm cart a covered wagon and an aristocratic carriage. Enlarged edition of a famous and extensively illustrated work on the duchy of Brabant including Louvain Brussels Antwerp and 's-Hertogenbosch and their surroundings by the historiographer Jacob le Roy 1633-1719. This rare work contains maps plans and fine views of the castles and county seats of the nobility of Brabant including their parks and gardens as well as the main monasteries and abbeys.The engravings are excecuted by several artists such as Jacob Harrewijn 1660-1727 a student of Romeyn de Hooghe Lucas Vorsterman II 1595-1675 who worked with Peter Paul Rubens and Robert Whitehand. Amongst the castles and houses depicted are views of Bonlez Beersel Bois-Seigneur-Isaac Corroy-le-Château Vilvoorde Cleydael Berchem and many others as well as views of monasteries and cloisters such as St Michael's Abbey Corsendonck and the Groenendael Priory. Other than castles and monasteries the work also contains a large view of the city of Turnhout and a folding plate of the St. Rumbold's Tower at Mechelen.It is bound as usual with Le Roy's L'erection de toutes les terres giving extracts of letters of Charles V Phillippe II Charles II and other emperors and kings on conference about titles of barons viscounts and counts and the setting up of lands in baronies marquisates and principalities. It contains a large double-page map of Brabant and 7 engraved illustrations of Héverlé Hoogstraten Walhain Grobbendonck Trazegnies Grimberghen and Westerloo identical to the map and engravings of these country houses in the first work.With the bookplate of Ivan Plissart late 19th-early to mid-20th century mounted on the front pastedown and a round shelfmark label mounted on the back board. The boards and spine are somewhat rubbed the edges and corners of the boards are scuffed the spine ends are slightly worn. The map of Tongerlo is somewhat browned but otherwise internally very clean. Separately issued as a supplement of the collection of Van der Aa Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en land reysen. - Jacob Janssen de Roy's book the largest single description of Borneo printed during the century which probably appeared in 1698 or 1699 for the first time is an extended apologia written to the governor-general and council at Batavia by a skipper who had lost his ship on the coast of Borneo in February 1692 as a result of the mutiny of his largely Chinese and Javanese crew. He and his shipmates barely survived hunger thirst exposure hostile natives and treachery before receiving good treatment and protection from the king of Banjarmasin in return for military assistance. Despite obtaining trading rights for the VOC Roy was outlawed for absconding with the ship's money and subsequently sailed as a free trader in the Indies visiting Borneo Sumatra and Siam. Having acquired a considerable fortune from his enterprises he was employed by the king of Siam to dispose of a certain English pirate who was visiting Siamese waters. The Roy's account includes brief descriptions of both Brunei and Sukadana although most of his description concern Banjarmasin. He also provided European readers with their first published description of Borneo's interior and of the people who lived there Lach Asia in the making of Europe III p.1390-1395. - Including an extensive description of the gold and diamonds mines on Borneo and the pirates of Palembang. - A fine copy.
