This present second edition of J. J. Scheuchzer's 1672-1733 scientific description of Switzerland is greatly enlarged and much rarer. The plates are mainly views and maps although there are also plates of geological profiles and samples scientific equipment and regional flora and fauna. From 1702 until 1711 Scheuchzer undertook yearly expeditions accompanied by friends and pupils. He was the first to systematically explore the Alps and became a pioneer in the fields of geology palaeontology and glaziology. The work offers historical details and together with Tschudi's chronicle it became one of the main sources for Schiller's "Wilhelm Tell". - A few tears in the folds of some maps and plates repaired. This catalogue of Swiss publications of 1701 with commentary and biographical details is arranged according to cantons where they were printed starting off with Zurich and ending with Geneva. Basel of course was an important publishing place and authors such as Zwinger have numerous entries. A small quarto measuring 9" by 6" with light rubbing to the cloth at the head and heel of the spine and with mild dust staining to the top edge of the text block. In a very good unclipped dust jacket with modest rubbing and wear to the ends of the spine area and with light soiling to the rear panel. Translated from the German and edited by Thomas N. Bonner. This is volume 27 in the University of Oklahoma's collection of books referred to as The American Exploration and Travel series. 114 pages of text including a list of other volumes in the American Exploration and Travel Series an index bibliography a list of elevations and locations and text. Originally published in German in 1859 this was the author's account of his participation in the Gunnison Expedition sent out in 1853 from Missouri to explore railroad routes to the Pacific. A lame horse forced his return to the main party an event which saved his life as Gunnison and the accompanying personnel were massacre by Indians. Schiel then joined the command under Lt. The second edition is the first Illustrated and first edition with the subtitle "Botanik als inductive Wissenschaft" Matthias Jakob Schleiden 1804-1881 considered the inductive method the only valid one in biology and the first part of this book constitutes an important document for the study of the methodology of natural history. He declared himself an enemy of all philosophical speculation while at the same time adhering to the views of Kant and rejecting the label of materialist. He completed his attacks against the philosophers with a brief polemical monograph against the philosophy of Schelling and Hegel. The entire structure of Schleiden's textbook was fundamentally new. The lengthy works begins with a study of the material elements of the plant. Next section is a large section of plant cytology and then a treatment of morphology and organology. The book which established the teaching o botany on a completely new basis was often reprinted and appeared in various translations and adaptations. To appreciate the enthusiasm it aroused and its influence in turning young man to the study of botany it is necessary to read the testimony of contemporaries particularly of Julius Sachs a famous botanist and author of the well known history of botany. Schleiden was one of the first to recognize the unique importance of the cell in biology and was a co-founder along with Schwann of the cell theory --- which states that the cell is the basis of both plant and animal life. His fundamentally important textbook of botany which was organized according to this theory contains the first detailed discussion of the structure and function of plant cells and thus marks the beginning of plant cytology. -cf.
