Sallo Jacob
The Most Beautiful Woman
New York: Vantage Press. Very Good in Very Good dj. c.1955. First Edition. Hardcover. a bit of wear and light bumping at spine ends top front corner also very slightly bumped; jacket age-toned with a bit of wear at extremities small tears with slight paper loss at top of spine small stain at bottom edge of rear panel. A "strange and fascinating novel about an illegitimate child who becomes a modern Jezebel. Through the clever use of her angelic innocent-seeming beauty Edna Mae conquers then destroys all who cross her path. In Farmdale town of her birth she becomes notorious as the cause of a triple tragedy: the deaths of the doctor's son of her youthful lover and of his father -- all in one night." The Chicago-born author's idea of authentic down-home Farmdale dialogue appears to have been primarily the substitution of "ya" for "you" at every opportunity; I suspect he'd never been much farther south than Garfield Blvd. . FALKE Jacob Von
ART IN THE HOUSE
FALKE Jacob Von. ART IN THE HOUSE. Boston: L. Prang 1879. 4to. Publisher's full brown morocco elaborately bli and gilt stamped all edges gilt. xxx 356 pages added chromolithographic ti page 60 plates. First American edition. Holzenberg # 77. Falke was perhaps the most important German writer on taste in the Aesthetic era. He has written a history of interior decoration--beginning with the Greco-Roman house through the eighteenth century. Critical observations on style and harmony are filtered through aesthetic principles. Successive chapters deal with decorating the house in various stages: the floor wall ornaments ceilings furniture and decorations on the table. His work reflec many of the "artistic" principles in vogue in England and elsewhere: the dependence of Form on function; the importance of good design in everyday living; and the preferred use of historical styles as inspiration rather tha strict models for modern decor. This edition was translated by C.C. Perkins from the third German edition. The 60 plates are a combination of five chromolithographs and 55 albertypes and typographic etchings. In addition there are one hundred and sixty-six in-text figures. Front cover with a gilt stamped vignette; interior of front hinge neatly reinforced; some light foxin Otherwise a very good copy of a heavy book usually found in shaken and worn condition. unknown books

NEWTON Isaac 1643 1727 'sGRAVESANDE Willem Jacob 1688 1742.
Mathematical Elements of Natural Philosophy Confirm'd by Experiments: Or an Introduction to Sir Isaac Newton's Philosophy. Written in Latin by the late W. James s'Gravesande. Translated into English by J. T. Desaguliers. The Sixth Edition greatly improved by the author.
London:: Printed by W. Innys T. Longman and T. Shewell C. Hitch and M. Senex 1747. 1747. 2 volumes. 4to. 4 lxxv 1 475 1; ii 389 33 pp. Original full calf raised bands calf gilt-stamped red & brown spine labels; joints cracked. Small rubberstamp on title. Very good. NICE CLEAN COPY. Sixth edition "greatly improved by the author" of 'sGravedande's extensive experimentation and instruction in Newtonian physics. The experiments range from basic physics to hydraulics optics electricity and astronomy. The entire work is profusely illustrated with folding engraved plates detailing among many other experiments and apparatuses a steam-powered Hero's Engine plate 78 a static electricity generator plate 79 the first magic lantern slide projector plate 109 the prismatic effect of a rainbow plate 120 and the known solar system plate 122. 'sGravesande "is the author of Elements de physique demonstres mathematiquement. . . ou introduction a la philosophie Newtonienne which was translated from the Latin and published at Leyden in 1746. In the second volume he gives a description of an electrical machine constructed on the plan of that of Hauksbee. It consisted merely of a crystal globe which was mounted upon a copper stand and against which was pressed the hand of the operator while it was made to revolve rapidly by means of a large wheel." Mottelay. / Willem Jacob 'sGravesande was a Dutch philosopher and mathematician. Born in 's-Hertogenbosch he studied law in Leiden and wrote a thesis on suicide. In 1715 he visited London and King George I. He became a member of the Royal Society. In 1717 he became professor in physics and astronomy in Leiden and introduced the works of his friend Newton in the Netherlands. He was ardently opposed to fatalists like Hobbes and Spinoza. In 1724 Peter the Great offered him a job in Saint Petersburg but 'sGravesande did not accept. His best remembered work is Physices elementa mathematica experimentis confirmata sive introductio ad philosophiam Newtonianam or Mathematical Elements of Natural Philosophy Confirm'd by Experiments Leiden 1720 in which he laid the foundations for teaching Newtonian physics. / 'sGravesande's chief original contribution to physics involved an experiment in which brass balls are dropped with varying velocity onto a soft clay surface. This demonstrated that a ball with twice the velocity of another would leave an indentation four times as deep that three times the velocity yielded nine times the depth and so on. He shared these results with Emilie du Châtelet who subsequently corrected Newton's formula E = mv to E = mv2. / 'sGravesande was also the owner of the oldest known magic lantern which was built around 1720 by Jan van Musschenbroek and is currently housed at the Museum Booerhave in Leiden. / "From the outset of his teaching both physics and astronomy 'sGravesande modeled his lectures on the example of Newton in the Principia and Opticks although in later years they incorporated other influences especially that of Boerhaave. Moreover he adopted from Keill and Desaguliers the notion of demonstrating to his classes the experimental proof of scientific principles accumulating an ever larger collection of apparatus as may be seen from successive editions of his Physics elementa mathematica experimentis confirmata. Sive introductio ad philosophiam Newtonianam Leiden 1720 1721. The scientific reputation of 'sGravesande is enshrined in this book which he constantly corrected and amplified in later editions. An 'official' English translation prepared by Desaguliers to whom copies of the Latin original were sent in haste was also issued in 1720 and 1721 and it passed through six editions. The booksellers Mears and Woodward printed a rival version under the name of John Keill. French translations appeared only in 1746 and 1747 but a critical review by L. B. Castel was published in the Memoires de Trevoux in May and October 1721. The book was at once welcomed by British and a number of German scholars." – DSB V p. 510. Fourth edition enlarged the first to include Kosmichen Physik of the famous physics textbook of Mathias Pouillet Elements de physique experimentale et de meteorologie 1827-30 translated and substantially enlarged and revised by Johann Muller a physics and technology professor at the University of Freiburg. Muller's version in turn became a standard physics textbook in the German-speaking world and went through a number of editions remaining in use through the early 20th century. "Muller's most significant textbook the Lehrbuch first appeared as Pouillet's Lehrbuch der Physik und Meteorologie a 'free adaptation' of the 1837 edition of C.S. Pouillet's Elements de Physique experimentale et de Meteorologie. Muller'sinnovations included numerous woodcuts inserted directly into the text. . .The illustrations of the apparatus were particularly useful for the mechanician. The book was initially styled for the nonphysics major. He supplied the derivations of mathematical formulas and stressed mechanical theorems. Muller incorporated Gauss's works on magnetism for the first time and recast the chapters on galvanism light and meteorology. Each of the seven editions that were published during his lifetime underwent considerable emendation. A third volume Lehrbuch der Kosmicschen Physik based upon Muller's own observations was added in 1856." –D.S.B. IX p. 566. F. Vieweg, 1852, 1853, 1856. hardcover books

Brown Jacob 1775 1828
Autograph letter signed "Jacob Brown to Nathan Williams calling for assistance at the Siege of Fort Erie
West Bloomfield NY 1814. 1 p. plus integral address leaf. 4to on a folded folio sheet. Old fold lines minor soiling; near fine. In a green half morocco and cloth clamshell case. 1 p. plus integral address leaf. 4to on a folded folio sheet. A hasty note written by Major General Jacob Brown to New York politician Nathan Williams requesting more arms and equipment for the siege of Fort Erie currently underway. The Americans led by Brown captured Fort Erie on July 3 1814. British forces led by Lt. General Gordon Drummond engaged the Americans at the bloody Battle of Lundy's Lane on July 25th where Brown was wounded; the Americans retreated to Fort Erie and Brown was sent off to convalesce. After repeated sorties and engagements the American commander General Gaines was gravely wounded and Brig. General Eleazer Ripley - who thought the whole operation was doomed to failure - took command. Brown though not quite recovered from wounds taken at the battle of Lundy's Lane the previous month was sent to replace the pessimistic Ripley as the commander of the Fort. Brown had made a name for himself at the battles of Sackett's Harbor and Lundy's Lane and his actions at the Siege would cement his position as a national hero winning him the Congressional Gold Medal in November 1814. Brown jotted this note before setting out to command the troops at the Fort. He writes:<br/> <br/>"My dear Sir I am so far on my way towards Buffalo. The militia turn out better than was expected. We shall I fear be deficient in arms. You will jump into your easy carriage and ride to Rome as fast as possible upon the receipt of this and see that the keeper of the arsenal there forwards fifteen hundred stand with equipments compleat with all the rapidity possible. Your attention is of much importance."<br/> <br/>A wonderful letter written by Major General Jacob Brown on his way to the battle that would ensure his lasting fame. unknown books
