Oberlin's Three Stages
New York: Harcourt Brace and Company. Near Fine in Very Good dj. c.1926. First American Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . very nice book virtually as new with no significant wear spine very slightly turned; jacket similarly nice with a few tiny edge-nicks minor crinkling at top of spine slight darkening to spine. "Honour Come Back --"
New York: The Macmillan Company. Fine in Near Fine dj. 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. lovely copy tight square and clean with no discernible wear attractive vintage bookplate on ffep; jacket has one small closed tear at top of front panel otherwise just a touch of edgewear here and there and some light soiling to the rear panel. Story of a young man who since childhood has hated the sight of pain and is considered a coward by his father. "When despite his loathing of suffering he is drawn into the War his taut nerves give way and he becomes obsessed with the conviction that he himself will never be killed but that he will be kept alive to watch others die around him. Ironically enough the Armistice is declared the day after he deserts from the Army. It is only then that life begins for Michael and his fear-ridden and sensitive youth retreats into the background before new experiences of great moment -- love and independence as a wage earner in post-War Italy." The British lesbian author Naomi Jacob 1889-1964 had been a teacher a suffragette a playwright and an actress but ultimately achieved her greatest success beginning in the mid-1920s as author of some 75 popular novels plus women's magazine series advice books and at least one biography. She moved to Italy where a significant portion of this book is set in 1930 and at one time reportedly had an unrequited crush on Una Troubridge longtime companion of Radclyffe Hall. In Diana Souhami's biography of Hall Ms. Jacob is described thusly: "She was Jewish large wore tweeds and clubbish ties and liked a drink." She is remembered today best as -- well actually she's barely remembered at all. . The Macmillan Company hardcover books

Woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials. Short marginal tear to title light dampstaining to first and last leaves. Later parchment over pasteboards ms. spine title. Provenance: Samuel Ashton Thompson Yates 1842-1903 bookplate dated 1894. First Edition of Cats' retelling of the Biblical tale of Queen Vasthi the wife of Ahasuerus who refused her husband's summons to appear before his guests wearing the royal crown and presumably nothing else and who was duly punished. The first part of Cats' word-playing verse adaptation whose title may be translated as The Theater of Manly Respectability is a long speech in the Queen's defense and in defense of all women followed by a speech against her and in favor of "Manly Respectability." The work concludes with the Judgment which is that Vasthi should obey her husband because women's subservience to men is a law of nature. A final poem titled "Aller Princessen Spiegel aller Vrovwen Spoor" is illustrated with an engraving showing the humbled queen wearing a yoke around her neck. The parallels and differences between the Biblical Ahasuerus and Herodotus' tale of King Candaules supplied in Latin and Dutch translations in an appendix whose wife's rebellion was more successful are fully exploited by Cats and by the illustrator Cats' usual partner the painter and engraver Adriaen van de Venne whose brother Jan published the edition.Van de Venne's engravings notably the scene of Candaules' naked wife being surprised by Gyges served as models for a number of Dutch painters. The Van de Venne brothers played a central role in the dissemination of Cats' poetry and it is their joint production that makes the works come alive: "The complete works of Cats together with Van de Venne's illustrations formed a sort of housebook of the Dutch people which remained popular for two centuries." Bol p. 117.Following the privilege on the title verso is a letter from the publisher to all bailiffs officials and readers "Noodige Waersschouwinge." complaining of the many counterfeit editions of an earlier Cats work the 1620 Self-stryt and explaining how to tell them apart. A second edition without the Noodige Waersschouwinge appeared later in 1622 and several further editions followed. De Jonge van Ellemeet Museum Catsianum 97; Bol Adriaen Pietersz. Van de Venne 1989 p. 118. Jan van der Hellen for Jan Pieterss. van de Venne unknown books

MANUSCRIPT ACCOUNTS LEDGER FOR CAPT. JACOB MARSH SLOOP ESSEX OF RAHWAY NEW JERSEY RECORDING HIS DELIVERY OF BRICKS FROM JOHN MARSH OF RAHWAY TO VARIOUS CUSTOMERS IN NEW YORK CITY AND BROOKLYN 1821-1823
Small oblong notebook bound in full calf with a metal clasp. 10 x 16 cm. approx. 164 pp. Spine perished wear and soiling to boards front board lettered by hand with Jacob Marsh's name. The entries from March 15 1821 to June 1 1823 record the dates of Marsh's trips once or twice a month to New York City to deliver bricks to as many as a dozen customers each trip plus the quantities of bricks purchased. Customers included: Henry Moore Dominic Westerfield Wm. Post Samuel Parker Gideon Peck Henry Bullwinkle John Scudder Avery & Anderson Vandenburgh & Freeman etc. etc. Capt. Marsh also delivered bricks produced by Benjamin and Samuel Marsh Aron Miller Thomas Marsh and Caleb Hotstedd. A few pages at the back of the ledger record dos-a-dos supplies for outfitting Capt. Marsh's sloop the Essex payments to crew duane sic- douane slips wharfage and repairs etc. Rahway New Jersey was founded by settlers of nearby Elizabethtown and Woodbridge in the early 18th century. The area around Woodbridge was known for its "easily accessible sedimentary clay that produced fire brick capable of withstanding extremely high temperatures" making them much in demand as building materials. A number of brick factories were located in this area. Rahway on the Rahway River allowed for easy access to the markets of New York City and Brooklyn. These accounts are an example of that early trade. see: Virginia Troeger's "Woodbridge: New Jersey's Oldest Township" Arcadia Pub.: 2002 for further record
The extended members of the Marsh family who settled in Rahway included John Marsh who built a saw mill and grist mill along the river in the early 1700s and died at his home at Trembly Point on the Rahway River in 1744.
Capt. Jacob Marsh who kept these accounts is likely a member of this extended family. Presumably he is Jacob Marsh 1797-1832 son of John 1772-1830 and Mary Hendricks Marsh. Jacob married Mary Ann Coddington 1802-1877 in 1819. There is a small receipt pinned into the front of this ledger dated May 8 1843 recording that Mary Ann Marsh received $6.51 "in full of all demand up to this date for John Trembly."

hardcover books
