Pinner Membre de la Société Asiatique de Paris &c. &c. &c. Erster band. Berlin 1842. Eigenthum des Verfassers. Preis 8 Rthlr. Velinpapier 10 Rthir." Ephraim Moses Pinner was a 19th century German Talmudist and archeologist. His first work published in 1831 the "Kizzur Talmud Yerushalmi V'Talmud Babli" was a translation of sections of both the Jerusalem and Babylonian Talmuds. This was the beginning of his larger project to produce a translation of the entire Talmud. Pinner's work took him to libraries across Eastern Europe. He even secured the aid of the anti-Jewish Czar Nicholas I and dedicated the translation to him. Only the first of the proposed 28 volumes was ever published. Besides for securing sponsorships from royalty across European Pinner gained letters of approbation from several rabbis none of whom lived in Russia. This was down apparently through some trickery on Pinner's part. Published by the author hardcover

Pitt, Moses
ORIGINAL ENGRAVED "A MAP OF THE NORTH-POLE AND THE PARTS ADJOINING
Oxford 1680. Engraved and vibrantly hand-colored map measures 23 in. x 18 in. Frame measures ~2625 in. x 24.75 in. Map in Good condition overall with mild age toning thin bands of discoloration down the midline and at the map's upper right corner. Mild soiling visible in margins. Small closed tear repaired along midline see final photograph. Remnants of adhesive along top edge. Map not examined out of frame. EL Consignment. Shelved at Rockville PS 1101 #25. Moses Pitt initially set out to produce an expanded edition of Jansson's Atlas Maior with his partner Jacob Van Waesberg. Unfortunately after production of several volumes the project failed and Pitt landed in debtor's prison. While most of the maps produced for the atlas are re-issues of earlier Dutch maps Pitt's map of the North Pole dedicated to the Right Honorable Charles FitzCharles Earle of Plymouth is an original production. The two vignettes show Inuit spear fishing and a European Whaling expedition. An inset map with annotations shows the most recent knowledge concerning Nova Zembla based upon Russian German and Dutch sources. The map's nomenclature is in English and clearly shows both a Northwest Pasage and a Northeast Passage. 1393299. Special Collections - Upstairs. unknown

The History or Narrative of the Great Level of the Fenns Called Bedford Level. Fens
London: Printed for Moses Pitt at the Angel in St.Paul's Church-yard 1685 First edition. Hardcover Book. Original or very early binding in full brown leather with no title and incised border lines to front and back covers. Title page A3 contents 81pp 15.5 x 10cm. The title page states: 'With a large map of the said Level as Drained Surveyed & Described by Sir Jonas Moore.' : note that this copy lacks this map. Otherwise a Good copy of a rare and very early book on the surveying and draining of the Fens that appears to have belonged at a later date to Lord Milton of Peterborough as a plain bookplate Milton Peterborough is pasted inside the front cover this partly obscures the Bookseller's text to the Reader which is printed on the front pastedown. The probable original owner's name is inscribed on the back of the title page: Geo. Underwood 1699; he has also inscribed his name in the margins of three pages in 1699 and 1704 with a correction to the text possibly made by him on one of those pages. A later hand has added a note in pencil on title margin that the author was Samuel Fortrey surveyor of the Middle Level. Other than this the text is generally clean with the odd spot or brown mark; the binding is sound though stretched and the covers rubbed to edges and spine. Pictures available.
