The historical importance of this intrepid crossing has never been fully recognized probably because the chief document pertaining to the Stevens Party has remained almost unknown and unavailable. The document is Moses Schallenberger's own account of crossing the plains and of his winter long vigil at Donner Lake when he was seventeen years old alone in a snow-buried cabin and with only foxes for food. Inspirado no «Sefer ha-Shorashim» medieval de David Kimi Ben-Ze"ev concebeu-o como um léxico de raízes hebraicas e bíblicas com tradução para alemão organizando-o de forma metódica e acessível. A obra conheceu seis edições até 1880 e serviu como instrumento fundamental de estudo do hebraico na Europa de Leste durante quase um século. A revisão de Schulbaum ampliou consideravelmente a obra original: as últimas quatro partes o dicionário caldaico-alemão o neo-hebraico o alemão-hebraico e o glossário de nomes próprios são inteiramente da autoria de Schulbaum conforme assinala a «Jewish Encyclopedia» de 1906.</p>_x000d_<p>A proveniência deste exemplar é de interesse histórico. O carimbo identifica S.H. Moutcanik como «ministre officiant» em Paris cargo correspondente ao de cantor ou oficiante litúrgico no sistema consistorial francês. O endereço da Rue Cadet n.º 10 situa-se no 9.º arrondissement de Paris nas imediações de várias instituições judaicas incluindo a Sinagoga da Rue de la Victoire. A presença de um dicionário hebraico-alemão publicado em Lemberga nas mãos de um oficiante religioso em Paris documenta a circulação destes instrumentos lexicográficos entre as comunidades judaicas da Europa Central e da diáspora francesa.</p>_x000d_<p>Judah Leib Ben-Ze"ev Lelów Galícia 1764 Viena 1811 foi filólogo lexicógrafo e estudioso bíblico membro do grupo de escritores hebraicos Me"assefim e figura central da Haskalá. Após uma educação talmúdica tradicional dedicou-se clandestinamente ao estudo da filologia hebraica e de matérias seculares. Fixou-se em Viena como revisor de provas nas oficinas tipográficas hebraicas de Anton von Schmid. É considerado o primeiro a sistematizar em hebraico a gramática hebraica segundo métodos ocidentais de investigação linguística. A sua gramática «Talmud lashon Ivri» 1796 serviu como principal manual de estudo do hebraico na Europa de Leste durante um século.</p>_x000d_<p>Moses Schulbaum Jezierzany Galícia 1835 Viena 1918 foi escritor tradutor e lexicógrafo hebraico. Entrou em 1870 na tipografia de Michael Wolf em Lemberga como revisor de provas. Em 1889 foi chamado como professor de hebraico para a escola do Barão de Hirsch em Kolomea sendo transferido em 1897 para a escola de Mikulince. Traduziu para hebraico «Die Räuber» de Schiller 1871 e a «Ética» pseudo-aristotélica 1877.
