‎Important document darchive privée du au jeune officier et futur amiral Léon Armand Foulcaud de Fourcroy, manuscrit inédit donnant une synthèse dune grande précision sur larmement des navires de la flotte française et sa production au milieu du 19eme siècle, cours dispensé à bord de l « Uranie », navire école de la marine en poste dans le bassin de Brest. LUranie, dessinée par larchitecte Barellier, est une frégate de 54,50 mètres hors-tout, déplaçant 2 560 tonneaux et armée de 60 canons. Construite à Toulon, elle entre en service 1840. Il est célèbre pour son rôle dans létablissement du protectorat français sur Tahiti : en 1843, ce navire moderne et parfaitement équipé appareille avec 450 hommes de troupes de marine ainsi que le futur gouverneur de lile et son logement préfabriqué en bois. Cette prise de possession donne lieu à des combats meurtriers contre une partie des habitants. Un « cimetière de lUranie » ayant à lorigine accueillis les morts de léquipage, existe toujours à Papeete. Le 17 janvier 1851, lUranie entre au bassin à Brest comme navire-école des canonniers en remplacement de la Minerve. En1852 : même service, mais à Toulon sous le commandement d'Edmond Jurien de la Gravière où il expérimenta de nouvelles méthodes de tirs à feux convergents. Abraham Léon Armand Foulcaud de Fourcroy (1831 - 1929) est un brillant officier de marine français et futur amiral. Aspirant le 1er août 1849, il est en fonction sur les vaisseaux "EURYDICE", « MONTEBELLO", puis l"URANIE", navire-école des canonniers, à bord duquel il a rédigé le présent manuscrit dont la reliure porte son nom en lettres dorées en queue du dos. Le manuscrit, de la main de Foulcaud, est consacré aux « conférences sur le canonnage faites à bord de lUranie ». Il constitue un précieux état de larmement des navires de la flotte française en 1850, informations relevant du secret militaire qui nétaient pas publiées. Rédigé à lencre brune, le document comporte 313 pages et abondamment illustré de schémas et tableaux en marge et dans le texte et remarquablement exécutés. Contemporary half-calf, tanned and dyed mauve, covers lined with violet percaline, smooth spine decorated and inscribed (binding rubbed). Important document from the private archives of the young officer and future admiral Léon Armand Foulcaud de Fourcroy; an unpublished manuscript providing a highly precise overview of the armament of French fleet vessels and their production in the mid-19th century, a course taught aboard the Uranie, a naval training ship stationed in the Brest basin. The Uranie, designed by architect Barellier, was a frigate measuring 54.50 meters in overall length, displacing 2,560 tons, and armed with 60 cannons. Built in Toulon, she entered service in 1840.
