1681. 28 231 1 blank; 33 19 pp. Rare first edition of a scholarly work on British herbs including those used to prevent or treat scurvy along with a treatise on various species of the American aloë. Although the Aloidarium title-page is dated 1680 Sweerts must have planned from the beginning to include it in the more extensive Herba and completed it after most of the Herba was finished since its imprint gives nothing but the year and the index to both works begins on the verso of the last page of text in the Aloidarium. Abraham Munting 1626-1683 was born in Groningen in the northeastern part of the Netherlands. He was a physician and an internationally renowned botanist an academic professor and director of the Hortus Botanicus at Groningen. The work is beautifully illustrated with flowering plants sometimes in pots. Also interesting as a botanical Americanum.Foot margin of frontispiece repaired minor water stains plates slightly browned but still in good condition.l Bibl. Med. Contemporary Dutch blindstamped vellum with arabesque design.<br/> <br/> Provenance: Karl Magnussun bookplate – John David Drummond 8th Earl of Perth Viscount Strathallan<br/> <br/> First expanded edition of one of the most attractive Dutch florilegia of the seventeenth century.<br/> <br/> Munting was professor of botany at the University of Groningen and took over and enlarged the botanic garden founded by his father Henricus. The present work depicts some of the exotic and remarkable plants growing in the garden. It is one of the earliest and most important documents concerning Japanese flora and its importation into the West predating Thunbergs works by almost one hundred years. "Munting wrote a number of works on medical-botanical topics but his posthumously published opus magnum the Naauwkeurige enjoyed particular success at least in part due to the novelty of the plates which in a radical departure from the iconography of the traditional florilegium presented its plant species against a charming series of landscape backgrounds . The illustrations are remarkable for their elegance and originality" Oak Spring Flora. The initial botanical line drawings are now known to have been by about ten different but unidentified artists. Some time after Munting's death and in preparation for their publication these line drawings had tone and the pictorial back- and fore-grounds added by Jan Goeree 1670-1731 under the supervision of the publishers. The plates were drawn by Munting and engraved by Jan Baptist; coloring was added later. This engraving like the other plates in the monumental and scarce work portrays the plant larger than life with an almost whimsical title ribbon. Boston: Medical Clinics of North America 1938. 8vo 22.9 cm 9". 647662 pp. <br><br>As the paper states "The World War the development of industrial accident boards the increasing range of pension bureaus of all types as well as the huge increase in accidents which parallels the intrusion of the automobile on the highways have brought with them an immense literature in all languages on the traumatic neuroses" p. 660. This specific work looks at how law and medicine approach neuroses what may cause traumatic neuroses and how it may be classified and treated. However Myerson states that "the history of the neuroses is the history of 'cures'" proving that at the time and arguably in the present as well the treatment of neuroses had yet to be mastered. Myerson discusses various types of neuroses including what we now call "post traumatic stress disorder" and distinguished it from a malingering which has a very long discussion.<br>Â Â Â Â Abraham Myerson 18811948 was a neurologist psychiatrist and researcher. His opposition to eugenics in the early 20th century was an uncommon opinion; he argued that mental issues were developed because of social environment more often than they were inherited.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: On the front wrapper a stamp that reads "#104 Dr. Hodskins."
