Trembley, Abraham
Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire d'un genere de Polypes d'Eau Douce à bras en forme de cornes.
1744. Leiden J. & H. Verbeej 1744 4° XVI 324 pp. 1 leaf "Avis au Relieur" illustrated with 4 large vignettes by J.v.Schley after C.Pronck with 13 full page engraved plates by Piere Lyonnet half leather; somewhat stained; very good coppy. BIRTH OF EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGY FIRST EDITION! Abraham Trembley 1710-1784 Scientist Philosopher and Pioneer of Experimental Zoology from Geneva discovered the regenerative powers of the polyp and photosensitivity in an animal without eyes and he was the first to witness cell-division anddiscovered Hydra. Trembley was the first person to show that certain animals can be artificially multiplied by Division the first to make permanent grafts on animal tissues the first to prove by rigorous experiment that asexual reproduction by budding occurs in animals and the first to witness cell-division: he also discovered the process by which Protozoa multiply. These are only a few of his contributions to biological knowledge. A large part of his research was concerned with the little fresh-water polyp hydra an animal of particular importance today because it is one of the standard "types" used all over the world in teaching elementary biology to students of science medicine and agriculture. At the time of publication the immediate philosophical repercussions were even more startling animal soul was clearly shown to be material. The heterogenetic origin of life seemed to be confirmed. Bonnet suggested that the polyp bridged the animal and vegetable kingdoms nullifying their supposedly complete separation. Later he declared the polyp to be the key to the interpretation of nature. Abraham Thornton a bricklayer was accused of the rape and murder of Mary Ashford when she was found dead the morning after a dance where the two had been seen together. Thornton admitted that the two had been consensually intimate but denied the charges of rape and murder. Eyewitness accounts backed up his story and in the absence of other evidence he was acquitted of both charges. Public outcry around his acquittal led to Mary's brother William invoking an "appeal of murder." This uncommon legal practice allowed a retrial of a defendant acquitted for murder but crucially gave the defendant the right to trial by battle. Thornton invoked that right and was released after William Ashford declined the challenge. The case resulted in the abolition of appeals by murder and thus the end of trial by battle. Despite his protestations of innocence the public was thoroughly convinced of his guilt. Unable to lead a normal life Thornton moved to the United States and settled in Baltimore Maryland. One of the former owners of our copy may have been John Bright 1811-1889 a r. unknown

Abraham Thornton a bricklayer "was accused of rape and murder after attending a dance where he became intimate with a gardener's daughter named Mary Ashford. They left the dance together and her body was found the next morning in a deep pool of water near a local footpath. Thornton was tried at the Warwick assizes on 8 August 1817. Since the marks on Mary's body were not necessarily inconsistent with Thornton's claim that she had consented to sexual intercourse and since the times on the morning in question when Thornton was seen walking home to Bromwich suggested he could not have been with her when she met her death the jury found him not guilty. The case aroused much interest and reminded people of a similar murder of a local woman a year earlier. Many were convinced of Thornton's guilt and he was assailed in local and London newspapers. A group collected around the Birmingham solicitor William Bedford invoked the old legal process of 'appeal of murder' by which a person acquitted of murder could be tried again for the same offense. This process was generally regarded as obsolet. unknown books
