Jacobi born in Hartum Westphalia received his MD at Bonn University in 1851. Shortly thereafter Jacobi joined the revolutionary movement in Germany was convicted of treason and imprisoned until he escaped in 1853. He then moved to New York and became a professor of childhood diseases. He also helped found the American Journal of Obstetrics.
