LINCOLN Abraham CIVIL WAR.
Lincoln’s treatment of Gen. Grant; Mr. Lincoln’s treatment of Gen. McClellan; The taint of disunion. . . In: Document No. 12. . . .
New York: printed by Thomas R. Dawley 13 Park Row and at all Democratic Newspaper Offices 1864. 8vo. 8 pp unpaginated. bound into mostly blank volume. Half-calf over marbled boards marbled endpapers raised bands on spine red black & gilt morocco spine labels minor scuffing wear to corners still VG copy from the library of noted New York City book collector Thomas Bell with his bookplate designed by Nancy Barnhart on front pastedown who was noted for his impressive library devoted mostly to Americana with many titles on Lincoln and sold at Anderson Galleries Auction in 1917. First edition of this scarce Democratic Party Copperhead influenced presidential campaign pamphlet perpetuating the complaints of mistreatment by Democratic candidate and former Civil War general George B. McClellan. This piece appears to have been published at the height of the Cold Harbor campaigns by the Union Army under command of Lieut. General Ulysses S. Grant which were suffering heavy casualties and significant blows to northern morale during the Civil War. The opening letter from President Lincoln denotes his complete confidence in Grant for the 1864 campaigns. In contrast McClellan has presented all of the attempts by Lincoln to encourage move troops and override orders from General as commander of the Union Army. In addition the Democratic ticket under McClellan wanted to negotiate with the Confederates immediately and place the agreement before the voters. Subsequent Documents included further charges against President Lincoln’s arbitrary arrests corruption and frauds Republican opinions about Lincoln and more. Dawley was self-styled as the Publisher to the Million and established himself at 13 and 15 Park Row as the “cheapest printer in the world†whose most successful Civil War publication was the best seller Incidents of American Camp Life. See: Nicolay & Hay Complete Works of Abraham Lincoln Bibliography No. 271; Philip R. Bishop Princes May Compete For But Only Huntingtons Can Buy Endpapers 2012 pp. 14-16. (printed by Thomas R. Lincoln Abraham
Lincoln’s Oft-quoted Letter Written Early in the War to his Treasury Secretary Vividly Demonstrating the Emotion and Strong Loyalty of the President
In making anti-slavery Republican Lewis Clephane the Post Master of Washington he disappointed “my old friend Nathan Sargent which wounds him and consequently me very deeply†“There is an office in your department called the ‘Commissioner of Customs… I will be much obliged if you agree for me to appoint Mr. Sargent to this place.†Lewis Clephane was the manager of the “Washington Era†an anti-slavery newspaper courageously operating in the nation’s capital at a time when it was not popular to take that stand there. Harriet Beecher Stowe was one of its contributors. She wrote what became “Uncle Tom’s Cabin†at his request after he asked for a story to serialize in his newspaper. In 1855 he and four other colleagues formed a group called the Republican Association of Washington and sent forth the call for the formation of the Republican Party. The next year he also put forth the call for the first Republican National Convention and served on its executive committee. Clephane campaigned for Lincoln in 1860 and in fact was president of the Washington Wide-Awakes. After Lincoln was elected he changed the name of his paper to the Washington Republican. For his many services and his political strength and support in the capital the new President felt obliged to offer Clephane a federal position in the city and settled on the postmastership. Nathan Sargent was a Whig who had served as sergeant at arms of the House of Representatives during Lincoln’s term in Congress from 1847-9 and was then Register of the U.S. Treasury. The two were friendly at the time and remained so afterwards. In 1859 Sargent wrote Lincoln setting forth his plan to unite the Republicans with old Whigs in the South in opposition to slavery for the 1860 election but while Lincoln appreciated the suggestion and support he realistically told Sargent “If the rotten democracy shall be beaten in 1860 it has to be done by the North; no human invention can deprive them of the South.†Sargent knew Washington and after Lincoln’s election hoped for the postmastership for himself. Lincoln had to make a choice for Postmaster of Washington D.C. and he chose Clephane. But he was unwilling to simply disappoint Sargent and found another position for him of as great or even greater import. And to accomplish the result he sought he wrote to Secretary of the Treasury Salmon Chase. Autograph letter signed Executive Mansion Washington May 10 1861 to Chase requesting Sargent to be given a post in the War Department. “My dear Sir: I have felt myself obliged to refuse the post-office at this place to my old friend Nathan Sargent which wounds him and consequently me very deeply. He now says there is an office in your department called the ‘Commissioner of Customs’ which the incumbent a Mr. Ingham wishes to vacate. I will be much obliged if you agree for me to appoint Mr. Sargent to this place.†Chase’s endorsement on the verso reads “Received May 10 ’61. Desires appointment of Nathan Sargent as Commissioner of Customs.†Chase complied. Sargent served as Commissioner of Customs from 1861-67. After he retired he wrote a book “Public Men & Events from the Commencement of Mr. Monroe’s Administration in 1817 to the Close of Mr. Fillmore’s†unknown

LINCOLN ABRAHAM. Gardner Alexander.
Mammoth Plate Portrait of Abraham Lincoln
Albumen print 18 1â„2 x 15 in. gold-ruled mount 22 x 18 in. with Gardner's imprint. Mount and print with minor soiling and foxing. A rare survival.<br /><br />A classic mammoth portrait of Abraham Lincoln showing the President just days before he delivered the Gettysburg Address.<br /><br />A giant of American photography Alexander Gardner is credited with introducing the large-format Imperial portrait to the United States while working as a staff photographer for Mathew Brady. Gardner left Brady's employ in early 1863 and his studio quickly rivaled Brady's for the quality and extent of its war and portrait photography. Gardner first photographed Lincoln as president-elect while working for Brady and he went on to take Lincoln's portrait more than any other photographer. Lincoln sat for Gardner on several occasions usually visiting his studio on Sunday to avoid crowds.<br /><br />Lincoln sat for this splendid large-format portrait on Sunday November 8 1863. His private secretaries John Hay and John Nicolay joined him. Hay noted in his diary that "We had a great many pictures taken … some of the Prest. the best I have seen." Ostendorf notes that this portrait one of five made that day "emphasized Lincoln's long lanky legs." Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address on November 19 1863 just eleven days after this portrait was made.<br /><br />The large-format Gardner portrait is rare and much sought-after. Another example was sold at Sotheby's on October 5 2011 lot 43 for $98500. Only a handful of copies survive several of which are trimmed and cropped. We are not aware of any other uncropped example in private hands.<br /><br />This mammoth photograph in original condition with the Gardner mount and imprint is a rare and important survival.<br /><br />Provenance: descended in the family of Colonel Oliver Perry Taylor of the 161st Ohio Volunteer Infantry sold Cowan's 4-5 December 2008. Early inscription on verso with erroneous final sentence: "Abraham Lincoln. Sunday Morning Febry 26th 1865. Presented to O. P. Taylor by Dr. Chas. Gentrick then residing at Washington. The last photograph of Lincoln – only six copies were printed when the negative was accidentally broken."<br /><br />Ostendorf Lincoln's Photographs O-79.<br /><br /><br /> Alexander Gardner, November 8, 1863

Lincoln Abraham
Manuscript Note As President; Endorsement of Charles C. C. Painter to Hospital Chaplaincy; Association with Three Historic Figures
Washington DC 1862. Attractively framed 16" x 20" with a large reproduction of Matthew Brady's iconic seated photographic pose and a BEP engraving of the Lincoln Memorial. Very fine. Six lines nineteen words in the hand of The Great Emancipator 16th President of the United States Abraham Lincoln. 6" x 3" envelope printed State of Connecticut Executive Department. "Charles C. C. Painter wants to be hospital chaplain - Is warmly recommended by Henry Hopkins to take his place at Alexandria" endorsed on the opposite end of the envelope "the above is Abraham Lincoln's writing / Wm. H. Crook". Attractively framed 16" x 21" with an iconic reproduction of Matthew Brady photo and a B.E.P. engraving of the Lincoln Monument. Provenance: In the Allen County Public Library Ft. Wayne IN is a letter from Henry Hopkins to Lincoln. It reads "General Hospital / Alexandria VA / June 16th 1862 - Mr. President The application of Rev. C. C. C. Painter of Virginia which some time since you endorsed on the back of a letter from Gov. Buckingham of Conn - for a Hospital Chaplaincy desires in my humble opinion your favorable notice. Nine months in the work and an acquaintance of eight years with him ennoble to say that he is just the man for the place. Besides by his loyalty he is cut off from all his resources. With my great respect Yr. most obedient servant Henry Hopkins". Along with this letter on file includes a list of references for Painter: 'Letters from President Mark Hopkins of Williams College and the Faculty of the Theological Institute of Connecticut recommending Rev. C.C.C. Painter of Drapers Valley Va for a hospital chaplain Letter from Gov. Buckingham of Conn. endorsed by the President on file Letter from Rev. H. Hopkins hospital chaplain Alexandria.' Autograph letter signed ALS. This is the envelope referred to in Hopkins letter to the President giving him an encouraging reminder of Painter's desire for the position and the need for appointment. Lincoln relieved MG George McClellan from command of the Army of the Potomac and his service as Commanding General on March 11 1862. During this period through July 23 responsibilities of Commanding General were fulfilled by President Lincoln himself. Lincoln was often deluged with both practical and political requests for appointments It would not have been uncommon for Lincoln to be accepting recommendations and acting on them as he had so many important responsibilities at this time. William H. Crook 1839 - 1915 was one of President Abraham Lincoln's bodyguards and personal couriers. After Lincoln's assassination Crook was dismissed from his duties for the evening by Lincoln that fateful day he continued to work in the White House for a total of over 50 years serving 12 presidents. As he did not join Lincoln's entourage until 1864 it is most likely that his endorsement was as an authenticator of Lincoln's handwriting as this note is not signed. On April 14 1865 Crook began his shift at 8 a.m. He was to have been relieved by John Frederick Parker at 4 p.m. but Parker was several hours late. Lincoln had told Crook that he had been having dreams of himself being assassinated for three straight nights. Crook tried to persuade the President not to attend a performance of the play Our American Cousin at Ford's Theater that night or at least allow him to go along as an extra bodyguard but Lincoln said he had promised his wife they would go. As Lincoln left for the theater he turned to Crook and said "Goodbye Crook." Before Lincoln had always said "Good night Crook." Crook later recalled: "It was the first time that he neglected to say 'Good Night' to me and it was the only time that he ever said 'Good-bye'. When good friend Ulysses S. Grant became President he appointed Crook "Executive Clerk of the President of the United States" in 1870 and dispersing agent in 1877 the latter the position he would hold for the rest of his career. Henry Hopkins Nov. 1837 - Aug 1908 was an American Congregationalist pastor and President of Williams College. Henry Hopkins grew up in Williamstown Massachusetts and graduated from Williams College in 1858 where he was a member of The Kappa Alpha Society. He studied theology at Union Seminary and was ordained as a minister in 1861. Hopkins became president of Williams in 1902 following the service of acting president John Haskell Hewitt and served until his planned retirement in 1908. He died of pneumonia shortly after retiring while traveling in Rotterdam. Charles C. Painter 1833-1895 was an American abolitionist Native American advocate and Congregational minister. The son of a Virginia planter who freed his slaves prior to the Civil War Painter served on the faculty of Fisk University dedicated to the education of African Americans. He was a prominent member of the Indian Rights Association. Founded in Philadelphia in 1882 the Indian Rights Association's stated objective was to "bring about the complete civilization of the Indians and their admission to citizenship." The Indian Rights Association also maintained close contacts with Indian agents and with native groups themselves through correspondence and trips to reservations and settlements. Painter made frequent trips to reservations to investigate the actions of Indian Bureau agents and to observe the living and health conditions of Native Americans. Painter personally favored Indian citizenship and the abolition of Indian reservations. He also lobbied heavily for the institution of the Allotment policy introduced by Senator Henry L. Dawes and passed in 1887 as the Dawes Act. unknown

Lincoln Abraham; Bancroft George
MEMORIAL ADDRESS ON THE LIFE AND CHARACTER OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN Delivered at the Request of Both Houses of the Congress of America Before them In the House of Representatives at Washington on the 12th of February 1866.
Washington: Government Printing Office 1866. First edition. With a fine steel-engraved portrait of Lincoln engraved by the Treasury Department as frontispiece. 8vo in the original brown pebbled and blind-stamped cloth with gilt tooled lettering block on the upper cover. 69 including appendix pp. A fine and bright copy the work is typically found with heavy foxing but in this copy it is only modestly so on the endpapers flies and prelims otherwise the book is nearly completely free of the usual foxing the brown cloth is not faded and the binding is firm a little cosmetic wear to the cloth in a short section of the outside hinges near the foot of the spine. VERY SCARCE FIRST EDITION. In Bancroft’s words: “The Assassination of Lincoln who was so free from malice has by some mysterious influence struck the country with solemn awe and hushed instead of exciting the passion for revenge. It seems as if the just had died for the unjust. When I think of the friends I have lost in this war---and every one who hears me has like myself lost some of those whom he most loved---there is no consolation to be derived from victims on the scaffold or from anything but the established union of the regenerated nation.<br> In his character Lincoln was through and through an American.Douglas his rival said of him: “Lincoln is the honestest man I ever knewâ€.the habits of his mind were those of meditaton and inward thought rather than of action. He delighted to express his opinions by an apothegm illustrate themby a parable or drive them home by a story. He was skillful in analysis discerned with precision the central idea on which a question turned and knew how to disengage it and present it by itself in a few homely stron old English words that would be intelligible to all.â€<br> Bancroft’s speech on Lincoln is one of the finest to have come out of the Congress.
