‎First Philadelphia Printing of the Gettysburg Address‎

‎Abraham Lincoln. "The Gettysburg Address" contained in "Report of the Select Committee Relative to the Soldiers' National Cemetery Together with the Accompanying Documents as reported to the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania March 31 1864." Harrisburg: Singerly & Myers State Printers 1864. Lincoln's famous speech was originally delivered at the Dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg; this early volume following shortly after that dedication records the events of the day details of the cemetery and the soldiers interred there and the original text of the Gettysburg Address.

The Gettysburg Address is a speech that U.S. President Abraham Lincoln delivered during the American Civil War at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg Pennsylvania on the afternoon of Thursday November 19 1863 four and a half months after the Union armies defeated those of the Confederacy at the Battle of Gettysburg. It is one of the best-known speeches in American history. This is the first Pennsylvania printing of the Address. It occupies the second unnumbered page of this volume on the recent consecration of the Soldier's National Cemetary near the end. Included also in the Report is material on the creation of the cemetery with statistical data names of the soldiers buried there and the program at the dedicatory ceremonies including the benedictions and the oration of the featured speaker Edward Everett. Wills's study of the Address discusses its textual variations and the surprising difficulty in determining precisely what Lincoln said. As printed here it tracks what Wills has identified as the likely text spoken by Lincoln; but differs in several respects from the 'final version' for example the omission of 'poor' in 'our poor power to add or detract.' In fair condition. Foxed frequent margin spotting. Original cloth worn at spine and extremities of boards with cardboard below cloth revealed. One full-page map of the battlefield and hospitals; one folding map of the cemetery grounds. unknown books‎

‎ABRAHAM LINCOLN‎

‎A Confederate Newspaper Prints Lincoln's Response to Horace Greeley's Anti-Slavery Editorial‎

‎
On the front page under "News from the North" is the text of Abraham Lincoln's reply to New York Tribuneeditor Horace Greeley. Greeley's letter urging Lincoln to emancipate all slaves in Union-held territory was known as "The Prayer of Twenty Millions." It was first published on August 20 1862. Lincoln responded on August 22 declaring that his paramount goal is to save the Union regardless of its effect on slavery as well as his personal views that all men should be free.
ABRAHAM LINCOLN.Newspaper. Richmond Whig Richmond Va. August 30 1862. 2 pp. 17 x 24 in.

Excerpt:

"…As to the policy I 'seem to be pursuing' as you say I have not meant to leave any one in doubt.

I would save the Union. I would save it the shortest way under the Constitution. The sooner the national authority can be restored the nearer the Union will be 'the Union as it was.' If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time save slavery I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery I do not agree with them—My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it and if I could save it by freeing allthe slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that.—What I do about slavery and the colored race I do because I believe it helps to save this Union and what I forbear I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause and I shall do morewhenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views.

I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men every where could be free."

Historical Background

Though this letter is often as proof that Lincoln did not intend to abolish slavery unknown to Greeley and most Americans Lincoln had already drafted the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation and was only waiting for a Union military victory to deliver it. Moreover Lincoln makes a "divide and conquer" rhetorical move: he splits the issue by stating that his constitutional duty as president is to keep the Union together while simultaneously expressing his personal view of universal freedom at the end.

Additional content in this issue includes a front page editorial "European Recognition" "The Indian Atrocities in Minnesota" "Yankee Finances" "An Order From Gen. Burnside" "The Peninsular Campaign—Gen. J. Bankhead Magruder's Official Report" which takes over two columns with considerable detail.

The back page has additional content with: "A Brilliant Cavalry Exploit" "The Impressment of Slaves In Georgia" "Outrages in Arkansas" "From Kentucky" and more. Additionally there are various reports from the "Confederate Congress" and numerous advertisements including a "$100 Reward" for a runaway slave.

The Richmond Whig is one of the less common—but still important—newspapers from the capital of the Confederacy.

In Four Years in Rebel Capitals: An Inside View of Life in the Southern Confederacy from Birth to Death journalist T. C. DeLeon wrote that the Richmond Whigwas among the South's best wartime newspapers. Their pages "recorded the real and true history of public opinion during the war. In their columns is to be found the only really correct and indicative 'map of busy life its fluctuations and its vast concerns' in the South during her days of darkness and of trial."

One of the more interesting episodes in the history of the Whig is its alleged involvement in a terror plot against New York City during the Civil War. The Whigwas reputed to have worked with the Confederate government to use advertisements and editorials to convey secret messages to Southern sympathizers in the North. In October 1864 the Whig was alleged to have run an editorial that signaled Southern supporters to embark on a terror campaign that called for widespread fires to be set in New York city and federal offices to be taken over and the capture of the city's military commander Maj. Gen. John Adams Dix.

Condition

Good. Never bound several folds with minor wear at the folds.
books‎

Endleaves with several rubber stamps of previous owner: Dr. Robert V. Day Los Angeles. Very good. First edition. Edwin Beer 1876 – 1938 American surgeon took his medical degree at College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York. He pioneered the endoscopic treatment of papillary bladder tumors. Beer is recognized as the founder of electrosurgery of the bladder. / "The authors base their work on twenty years' experience with diseases of the genito-urinary tract in children. The preliminary chapter is devoted to the symptomatology of genitourinary disease in young life. The technic of cystoscopy and pyelo-ureterography is discussed in some detail. Intravenous pyelography by the use of sodium-2-oxo-5-iodo-pyridine-n-acetate is described and its advantages and indications are pointed out. The use of the Bucky diaphragm is not advised. Edwin Beer writes on enuresis in childhood. He emphasizes the need for a thorough examination in order to determine the etiologic factor. Hyman writes the important chapter on infections of the urinary tract cystitis pyelitis pyelonephritis. He presents the most recent contributions to bacteriologic experimental surgical cystoscopic and roentgenographic progress. He appropriately avers that "pyelitis" is a misnomer which covers a number of conditions and that "pyuria" is more applicable until the true nature of the underlying lesion is understood . . . This monograph presents the essential clinical and special urologic data in a clear practical manner." – JAMA. 1930;9517:1286. See: G. W. Kaplan "Edwin Beer--a patriarch of pediatric urology." ‎The Night Blowing Cereus‎

‎London 1800. Hand-coloured and colour-printed mezzotint engraving by Dunkerton. The most strikingly beautiful flower plates ever to be printed in England.

"The plant shown in this picture Selenicereus grandiflorus L. Britton & Rose. is also known as the Moon Cactus from the moon-like appearance of the fully open flower. Thornton also says that. it was sometimes called the `Torch Thistle' as it `exhibits to the observer a figure equally grotesque as terrific with flowers possessing actually the blazing appearance of a torch.' The plant is a native of Jamaica and Cuba. This picture is one of the most arresting in the collection. The plant itself is of interest not only for its large and beautiful flowers but as a representative of those which growing in a hot and dry environment open their flowers at night for pollination by night-flying insects pollinators being scarce in such climates during the heat of the day. This has a curious effect where public botanic gardens are concerned since these are shut at night to visitors who thus never see the plant in full bloom." Ronald King. The Temple of Flora by Robert Thornton. 1981 p.74. Thornton's Temple of Flora is the greatest English colour-plate flower book. ".Thornton inherited a competent fortune and trained as a doctor. ‎The Persian Cyclamen‎

‎London 1804. Hand-coloured and colour-printed aquatint with stipple and line engraving by Elmes. Paper watermarked 1804. The most strikingly beautiful flower plates ever to be printed in England.

"The Persian Cyclamen Cyclamen persicum Miller parent of the florist's cyclamen. is a native of the countries and islands at the eastern end of the Mediterranean but not of Persia itself. It is the largest flowered of an attractive genus of small plants much grown in modern times by connoisseurs. The Persian Cyclamen was not the first of its kind to become known in western Europe. Cyclamen europeaum the `Bleeding Nun' as it was called was thought to be dangerous to pregnant women: any unfortunate lady in this condition who stepped over it might immediately miscarry. John Gerrard the Elizabethan herbalist believed this implicitly and describes how he fenced his plants around with sticks with others laid across them `lest any woman should by lamentable experiment find my words to be true by stepping over the same.' When the baby was nearing full term and delivery was to be encouraged wearing of the disc-like tuber `hanged about' the expectant mothers had a salutary effect and Gerrard told his wife to use it when attending confinements. Its use by midwifes dates back to the days of the Greeks." Ronald King. The Temple of Flora by Robert Thornton. 1981 p. 52. Third state of three of this plate from the Temple of Flora. `In the first state the top the castle is indistinct and has no pinnacles on the towers and this is the first feature to inspect. The hillside is pure aquatint; the shading behind the cyclamen flowers is lightly cross-hatched while the tree trunk to the right has only a few lines on it. In the second state the castle is more prominent and five distinct sharp pinnacles have been added while many extra etched lines are to be seen - notably behind the cyclamen flowers; on the tree trunk; and under the cyclamen leaves on the left which themselves stand out more sharply. The principal change in the third state is the addition of the aquatint to the sky on the left so that only a streak of light remains above the mountains while in the earlier states the light reached the top corner. The leaves of the cyclamen now have. light and dark patches the coarse-grained aquatint has been added to the middle distance. Much additional aquatinting has been applied to other parts of the plate. The most easily-noticed difference however are the changes in the castle between states one and two and in the sky between states two three." Handasyde Buchanan. Thornton's Temple of Flora 1951 p.15. ‎LINCOLN Abraham 1809 1865 President.‎

‎"A Proclamation." Being the: "Emancipation Proclamation" Liberty for Slaves. WITHIN: General Orders No. 1. General Orders of the War Department Embracing the Years 1861 1862 & 1863. Adapted specially for the use of the Army and Navy of the United States. Vol. II.‎

‎New York: Derby & Miller 1864. 1864. Volume II. 8vo. xxxi 1 711 1 pp. Subtle waterstain at top margin viewable from pages 500-712. Original full dark blue-green pebbled cloth gilt spine titles; light wear to extremities. Bookplate of the Essex Institute; small rubber stamp on title C.W. Post College Documents Library. The Emancipation Proclamation declared freedom for all slaves by January 1 1863. This proclamation is dated January 2 1863. Lincoln in writing this one of the most important documents in all US history declared "And by virtue of the power and fpr the purpose aforesaid I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States and parts of the States are and henceforward shall be free; and that the Executive government of the United States including the military and naval authorities thereof will recognize and maintain the freedom of said persons." / The War Orders of 1863 are among the most historical during the Civil War. The volume includes: General Orders No.1: Emancipation Proclamation Liberty for Slaves. / General Orders No.100: The Lieber Code How soldiers should conduct ethically themselves in wartime. / General Orders No. 143: Order for the creation of the United States Colored Troops. / General Orders No.1. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1 1863. With this Executive Order. He took a decisive stand on the most contentious issue in American history redefined the Union's goals and strategy and sounded the death knell for slavery. / Lincoln had always believed slavery to be immoral and fought its expansion. The President took the action "sincerely believed to be an act of justice" knowing that it might cost him the election. / With the Emancipation Proclamation Lincoln dramatically tied the Union's war aims to ending slavery. Whether they approved or not after January 1 1863 Americans could no longer deny that emancipation was central to the Union war effort. / Though ready to lay the groundwork for emancipation Lincoln feared that delivering the Proclamation at the wrong time would doom its chances for public acceptance and harm the Union cause. / On September 22 1862 Lincoln issued his preliminary Emancipation Proclamation giving the South 100 days to end the rebellion or face losing their slaves. / His final Proclamation on January 1 1863 further demonstrated his own evolving views by eliminating earlier references to colonizing freed blacks and compensating slave-owners for voluntary emancipation. Lincoln also added provisions for black military enlistment. Pausing before he signed the final Proclamation Lincoln reportedly said: "I NEVER IN MY LIFE FELT MORE CERTAIN THAT I WAS DOING RIGHT THAN I DO IN SIGNING THIS PAPER." Despite the political risks by 1864 he insisted on both reunion and emancipation as preconditions to any peace negotiation. Though the battle for civil rights would have to follow Lincoln rightly regarded the Proclamation as: "THE CENTRAL ACT OF MY ADMINISTRATION AND THE GREAT EVENT OF THE 19TH CENTURY" Derby & Miller, 1864. hardcover books‎

This specific work looks at how law and medicine approach neuroses what may cause traumatic neuroses and how it may be classified and treated. However Myerson states that "the history of the neuroses is the history of 'cures'" proving that at the time and arguably in the present as well the treatment of neuroses had yet to be mastered. Myerson discusses various types of neuroses including what we now call "post traumatic stress disorder" and distinguished it from a malingering which has a very long discussion.
Abraham Myerson 1881–1948 was a neurologist psychiatrist and researcher. His opposition to eugenics in the early 20th century was an uncommon opinion; he argued that mental issues were developed because of social environment more often than they were inherited.
Provenance: On the front wrapper a stamp that reads "#104 Dr. Hodskins." Spratt and two odes on Cowley's death by Thomas Higgons and Sir John Denham. Once considered the epitome of his era's wit the author of "The Mistress" verses in honor of love and various women included in this volume suffered a notable decline in popularity in subsequent years prompting Pope's musing "Who now reads Cowley . . . but still I love the language of his heart." And indeed despite the vagaries of reputation he has always had his worthy appreciators.
Cowley's Pindaric odes are present here as are the "Davideis" and "Davideidos"; also set forth are the "delightful little prose Essays with verse interwoven" for which The Concise Cambridge History of English Literature believes Cowley will most ultimately be remembered.
